Copper engraved map of the Polesine of Rovigo from Magini's "Italia, data in luce da Fabio suo figliuolo". Original old outline colour; verso blank with old ink map number to upper corner. The somewhat naîve colour indicates the borders of the areas. The map shows the Polesine which is the name of the low ground between the lower courses of the rivers Adige and Po and the sea. The derivation of the name is much discussed, generally applied only to the province of Rovigo, but is sometimes extended to the neighborhood of Adria and Ferrara, as on this map. 480 340mm

[Forest Law].
The original owner's tastes and anxieties are evident from the contents: there are sections discussing noble entertainments such as "hawkinge and huntinge in the forrest" (fol. 22 and 30) and hunting methods (fol. 42), including the use of "Dogges ... in the forrest" (fol. 19 and 23), and the taking of hare and certain birds by "royal hawkes" (fol. 21). There are also the concerns of the landowner in "common [rights to wood and hunting] in the forrest" (fol. 46), and lists of practical animal keeping, such as the "beastes and fowles" one can keep in a warren (hare, coneys [rabbits], pheasant and partridge) (fol. 21). A few entries even hint he may have held high social status: the "Earles del [the earl's part, of the] forrest" (fol. 6), and practical sections on the employment of officials: "fforesters", "bedell of the forrest", "woodwardes" and "steward of the forrest" (fol. 55). Whether for the noble pursuit of hunting game, or for more mundane practices such as fattening pigs on fallen acorns, the forest played a central part in the economy of medieval England. Thus from the Norman period onwards, a wide and complex body of rights and legislation built up around it. Those who owned estates needed to know their rights, and thus compilations such as these, often as here with easy reference tools such as subject indices at their front, were produced for elites. This text is entirely secular and noble in subject; written almost entirely in Tudor English with short Latin quotes, and contains a condensed form of legal knowledge on this subject drawn from half a millennium of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Franco, (Mexican School, 18th century); Goetz, Franz Regis
Oil in canvas, some minor flaws, overall very good. Eighteenth century. 275 mm x 190 mm.- A lively portrait of Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza (1600 - 1659), amongst the most influential figures of Mexico in the 17th century; the painting is signed "Franco", possibly Ignacio Franco, active in Queretaro in the 18th century. Palafox was a natural son to Jaime Palafox, Marquis of Ariza, he studied at the University of Alcala de Henares and Salamanca; in 1639 he is appointed Bishop of Tlaxcala (Puebla de los Angeles), where his efforts on protecting the native population, including his prohibition of converting the natives by the use of force, gained fame and love. In 1642, by command of the King, Palafox deposed Viceroy Diego Lopez de Pacheco Cabrera, himself becoming interim Viceroy during the same year; although a brief period of time, he supported the appointment of creoles to public office, tried to reduce taxes to promote the economy, and favored commerce. Undisputable men of letters, Palafox founded the Schools of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, giving to the later a magnificent library, today called the Palafoxiana. The portrait here presented is after a composition by Franz Regis Goetz: Palafox is surrounded by allegories and emblems, a subject not uncommon under the reign of Charles III of Spain (for example those portraits by Miguel Cabrera and Juan Patricio Morlete), when the beatification of Palafox was under course, promoted by Fray Alejandro de la Concepcion. The iconography of this portrait, as well as others, is closely associated with the Convents of the Disca … [Click Below for Full Description]

EARLY SEVENTEENTH CENTURY WORK ON GOUT & RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS: : HUGUES DE SALINS? COPY. First edition of this rare work on the nature, cause and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and gout. The status of gout in the late sixteenth century was such that gout was said by Turberville to be found in "horses, capons, and falcons." (p. 64). John Gerard's Herball, 1597, stated that Gout-wort, or Herba Gerardi, was a native herb that could be used with some benefit, supported further by Culpeper. According to Copeman, Thomas Sydenham (1624-1689), suffered from gout and wrote the classic description of the disease, and was the first to be able to differentiate between rheumatoid arthritis and gout. The present work was written decades earlier. Francesco India cites Galen (Chap. 1), Ambroise Pare (Chap. 12) and Jean Fernel (Chapters 5, 7, 8). India makes two 15-page tables of causes which he uses to organize his data. PROVENANCE: Hugues de Salins: The British Library catalogue lists a "Hugues de Salins; see: Jean Baptiste de Salins, Defense du vin de Bourgogne, 1704." This may be a descendent.
