OLIVA, Jouanne (fl. 1570-1614).
Marseilles: Ca 1600. Single vellum leaf, float-mounted and framed (20 x 28 inches; framed size: 28 x 35 inches). AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE AND RARE MANUSCRIPT PORTOLAN CHART in pen and black, red, blue, brown and green ink, heightened in gold and silver, of the island of Sicily, the title within a ribbon banner heightened in gold and silver and surrounding the arms of the Kingdom of Sicily oriented to the south, showing an erupting Mount Etna, all important ports and towns given in Italian and Catalan, river systems and mountains, decorated with a large and beautiful compass rose radiating rhumb lines, an elaborately decorated scale lower right, the sea with magnificent galleons and terrifying sea monsters, all surrounded by a border of black and gold fillets. Provenance: Marvin Carton, his sale Sotheby's New York, February 2, 1985, lot 67 Jouanne/Joan Oliva was a member of a large family of Catalan hydrographers who for over a century dominated portolan chart making in the western Mediterranean. Charts signed by no fewer than sixteen different members of the Oliva family are recorded between 1538 and 1673, and individual members apparently worked throughout the Mediterranean world, as their charts originate from Majorca, Messina, Naples, Livorno, Florence, Venice, Malta, Palermo and Marseilles. Joan appears to have been the most prolific and highly regarded of this famous family. The earliest of his charts were executed in Messina but he is also recorded as living in Naples as well as Marseilles, where he is thought to have died. His known works are quite scarce, and in A. - Antique print, titled: 'Moravia.' - Detailed map centered on Brno. Moravia map, edited by Mercator and signed "Per Gerardum Mercatorem. Cum privilegio." in lower right corner, published by Jodocus Hondius. Copperplate engraving with hand colouring on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Gerard Mercator' after 'Jodocus Hondius'. Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in Flanders and studied in Louvain under Gemma Frisius, Dutch writer, astronomer and mathematician. The excellence of his work brought him the patronage of Charles V, but in spite of his favor with the Emperor he was caught up in the persecution of Lutheran protestants and charged with heresy, fortunately without serious consequences. No doubt the fear of further persecution influenced his move in 1552 to Duisburg, where he continued the production of maps, globes and instruments. Mercator's sons and grandsons, were all cartographers and made their contributions in various ways to his atlas. Rumold, in particular, was responsible for the complete edition in 1595. The map plates were bought in 1604 by Jodocus Hondius who, with his sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, published enlarged editions which dominated the map market for the following twenty to thirty years. Jodocus Hondius born 1563 in Ghent (Flanders) and grown up there. He became a globe maker and map engraver. In 1593 set up his business in Amsterdam after he spent some years in London. He was one of the most important engravers of his time and engraved maps for van den Keere, Waghenaer or Speed. Hondius … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wellcome 2819. Young, Memory, 128. Yates, Art of Memory, p.165. Second edition. The work comprises 20 lessons on mnemonics (the last one suggesting how to best forget unpleasant experiences). Verona: Societatis Aspirantium cura,[Angelus Tamus] on colophon, 1600. FIRST EDITION. Some mispagination, but collates complete, with errata. Printer's device depicting snakes in water on the title page, woodcut initials, and a large woodcut above the colophon. Contemporary stiff paper binding with handwritten title on the spine; text block crisp and clean. With the bookplate of Kevin J. Fraser on the paste-down. First edition of this rare work on the causes and treatment of gout. By the end of the sixteenth century, medical knowledge of gout had not progressed much past theories of the humours or wild guesses regarding diet. Purging and bleeding to restore balance were still the most widely prescribed remedies, though various other treatments (some quite disgusting) were also experimented with. This treatise by the Veronese natural philosopher and physician Francesco India (fl. 1590's) includes a great many tables to assist in identifying the various types and treatments of the disease. India specifically identifies different forms and effects of gout and for each class details various remedies and restrictions. Quite a forward-thinking work for the time. India also published works on pharmacology and yellow fever, as well as a philosophy work on the meaning of heroism.

ZUCCHETTA, Giovanni Battista. -
Brescia, Sabbio, 1600. In - folio. First edition. «The work has several interesting features... The "Prologo" is a curious dissertation with some 98 arguments to show the need for arithmetic on the part of all classes of humanity. The farmer, the musician, the thief, the cook, the prelate, all are shown to have need of number; and Nature, Intelligence, and even God himself make use of it. The book presupposes a knowledge of the arithmetic of integers, and opens with a treatment of fractions... The latter part of the book treats of such topics as partnership, barter, and alligation» (Smith, Rara Arithmetica, 425 - 427). According to Riccardi it is on of the best treatises on mercantile arithmetics. With an engr. title. Slight dampstains on a few leaves but a good copy in 18th century half vellum.
