Lao, Tsu [Author]; Zhu, Xi [Editor]
Fukien, China: Yeh Nan-sung-t'ang, 1600. Four vols. in two, stab-bound in contemporary Korean paper covers, resewn, minor worming, very good in a cloth folding case. Zhu Xi (1130-200) was a Song Dynasty scholar who championed the importance of the Four Books (Analects, the Mencius, the Great Learning, and the Doctrine of the Mean) in Chinese philosophy during a time where the I ching (Book of changes) was considered the most important text. His heavily annotated editions of each became standard texts after his death. This copy of the I ching was printed later in the Ming dynasty, and contains a colophon in the form of a cartuche in the back, indicating the name and place of its publisher.

- A hunting scene in a wooded mountain landscape. Three hunters and a pack of dogs is discussing strategy in the left foregrtound. In the foreground on the right a mounted hunter and his dogs are chasing two rabbits towards the plate's edge. The middle of the scene has some additional figures, one of which firing a long-barreled musket. A city is visible in the background, and several birds (stork/heron?) are flying above the city. Copperplate etching/engraving on a verge type handlaid paper. Description: This original print originates from a 16th/17th century series of landscape engravings. Artists and Engravers: Engraved by Justus Sadeler after Paulus Bril. Paul Bril (1554-1626) was a landscape painter who worked in Rome, although born in Antwerp. This type of landcape, known as vedute ideate or vedute di fantasia, is a typical example of his best-known work. The Sadeler family were the largest, and probably the most successful of the dynasties of Flemish engravers that were dominant in Northern European printmaking in the later 16th and 17th centuries, as both artists and publishers. The Sadelers were descended from "chasers," engravers of armour, from Aalst. Jan de Saeyelleer or Sadeleer had three sons, all usually called "Sadeler":[2] Jan I (1550 Brussels - 1600 Brussels or possibly Venice),[3] Aegidius I (c. 1555 Brussels - c. 1609 Frankfurt am Main) and Rafael I (1560/61 Antwerp - 1628 or 1632). Another Sadeler, Marcus or Marco, was a printer and perhaps publisher who was working in Haarlem in c. 1586-87, and is presumed to be a member of the family, though it is not … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni ORLANDI (Attivo 1590 -1640)
A bird's-eye view of the siege of Nagykanizsa, 1601, in the edition by Henri van Schoel. In 1601, a small Ottoman force held the fortress of Nagykanizsa in western Hungary against a much larger coalition army of the Habsburg Monarchy, while inflicting heavy losses on its besiegers. This battle was part of the Long War between the Ottoman Empire and the House of Habsburg, lasting from 1593 to 1606. The plate was published the first by Giovanni Orlandi in 1602. The van Shoel's edition, without date, probably was published around 1609, when Orlandi moved in Naples and sold his plates to the Flemish editor. Literature: Ganado (1994): VI, p. 200, n. 38. Matteo FLORIMI (1581-1613)
In basso a sinistra l'imprint editoriale Matteo flor. for. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
