GESUALDO, Filippo (1550-1618). -
Venezia, Heredi di Perin, ad istanza di Pietro Bertelli, 1600. In - 4. Wellcome 2819. Young, Memory, 128. Yates, Art of Memory, p.165. Second edition. The work comprises 20 lessons on mnemonics (the last one suggesting how to best forget unpleasant experiences). With 4 full - page diagrams and an engraved full - page anatomical figure of a man accompanied by numbers. "Instead of using words or letters of the alphabet, the author proposes a series of forty - two numbers attached to individual parts of the body... As a mnemonic model, the body has an advantage over imaginary structures as a site always available for refere … [Click Below for Full Description]

Verona: Societatis Aspirantium cura,[Angelus Tamus] on colophon, 1600. FIRST EDITION. Some mispagination, but collates complete, with errata. Printer's device depicting snakes in water on the title page, woodcut initials, and a large woodcut above the colophon. Contemporary stiff paper binding with handwritten title on the spine; text block crisp and clean. With the bookplate of Kevin J. Fraser on the paste-down. First edition of this rare work on the causes and treatment of gout. By the end of the sixteenth century, medical knowledge of gout had not progressed much past theories of the humours or wild guesses regarding diet. Purging and bleeding to restore balance were still the most widely prescribed remedies, though various other treatments (some quite disgusting) were also experimented with. This treatise by the Veronese natural philosopher and physician Francesco India (fl. 1590's) includes a great many tables to assist in identifying the various types and treatments of the disease. India specifically identifies different forms and effects of gout and for each class details various remedies and restrictions. Quite a forward-thinking work for the time. India also published works on pharmacology and yellow fever, as well as a philosophy work on the meaning of heroism.

ZUCCHETTA, Giovanni Battista. -
Brescia, Sabbio, 1600. In - folio. First edition. «The work has several interesting features... The "Prologo" is a curious dissertation with some 98 arguments to show the need for arithmetic on the part of all classes of humanity. The farmer, the musician, the thief, the cook, the prelate, all are shown to have need of number; and Nature, Intelligence, and even God himself make use of it. The book presupposes a knowledge of the arithmetic of integers, and opens with a treatment of fractions... The latter part of the book treats of such topics as partnership, barter, and alligation» (Smith, Rara Arithmetica, 425 - 427). According to Riccardi it is on of the best treatises on mercantile arithmetics. With an engr. title. Slight dampstains on a few leaves but a good copy in 18th century half vellum.

Rinuccini, Ottavio.
Florence, Giorgio Marescotti, 1600. 4to. (24) pp. With armorial woodcut to title page and printer's device to verso of final leaf. Modern half vellum with handwritten spine title and marbled covers using old material. Exceptionally rare first publication of the libretto of the first opera in musical history, also the first opera libretto ever printed. The music by Jules Caccini and Jacopoto Peri, composed for the first performance on the occasion of a carnival soirée at the Palazzo Corsi in Florence in 1598, is lost. Ottavio Rinuccini (1562-1621), who also wrote the textbook for "Euridice", was not an occasional librettist, but a court poet among who also composed sonnets and verse drama (cf. Honolka, Geschichte des Librettos, p. 22). The present libretto was probably published for a later performance at the Corsis' in August 1600 (for the history of genesis and performance history cf. the extensive account in Sonneck I, p. 339-345). Rinuccini's "Dafne" was again performed, with new music by Marco da Gagliano (1582-1643), in 1608: this score is preserved to this day, and the opera has been performed repeatedly on European stages throughout the 20th century. - Marescotti's fine woodcut device on the final page shows a naval emblem with the motto "Et vult et potest". Very occasional slight browning. On leaf C2v the setting error "DEL" has been corrected by "AL" pasted over the erroneous word. A fine copy. Edit 16, CNCE 29328. BM-STC Italian 556. Sartori 7015. Sonneck 339. Wotquenne 47. Wolffheim II, 1083. Fuld 61.
