"Fine example of Magini's regional map of Italy, extending from the Gulf of Venice to Milan and North to the Lake District and the Alps. Fine elaborate detailed cartouche. This map is a compendium of a set of thirteen more detailed ones which represent the territories of the Republic of Venice, with the exception of of the town of Trento and the areas surrounding it. It is similar to Mercator's 1589 map. Engraved by Arnoldo Arnoldi. In very good conditions. -Italy according to Magini: a cartographical model for posterity- Giovanni Antonio Magini was born in Padua in 1555, dedicating himself to the study of astronomy from an early age. In 1588 the Senate of Bologna appointed him Lecturer of Astronomy at the local university, choosing him instead of Galileo Galilei. His friendship with the Duke of Mantua, Vincenzo Gonzaga, helped Magini in his quest to obtain cartographical material for map-making from the various sovereigns ruling the different italian states at that time. Because of Magini's early death in 1617 this effort was made known by his son Fabio when … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mattheus QUAD (Deventer 1557 - Colonia 1613)
Important early map of the North Polar regions, based upon Mercator's map of 1595. The North Pole is shown according to legend as a large rock in a giant whirlpool and surrounded by four islands that are separated by rivers. The magnetic north is depicted as a separate island rock just outside the polar mass. In North America is an very early reference to California (California regio, sola fama Hispanis nota), curiously shown north of the El streto de Anian. The map depicts the attempts of Frobisher and Davis to locate the northern passages to Asia. The map image is surrounded by a floral design with four roundels in each corner. These contain the title, the Faeroe Isles, the Shetland Isles, and the mythical island of Frisland. Burden, P.D. 134; Meurer, P.H. (Cologne) Qua 79

Mattheus QUAD (Deventer 1557 - Colonia 1613)
One of the earliest obtainable maps of the South American Continent, engraved in Cologne by Johann Bussemacher for Quad. The map is preceded by the maps of Forlani and De Jode and is one of only a few separate maps of the continent of South America published prior to 1600. Embellished with sea monsters and sailing ships, a narrow Strait of Magellan is shown, with a large unknown southern continent. Magellan's ship is illustrated in the Pacific. Several interesting annotations are shown in Latin.

Mattheus QUAD (Deventer 1557 - Colonia 1613)
Rara." "Striking example of Quad's map of North America, based upon De Jode's landmark map of 1593. Jode's map is one of the earliest maps to concentrate on North America alone. Quad here continues the mistake of placing the nomenclature of Virginia too far north. A long narrow waterway to the north represents the North West Passage; Lago de Conibas is also indicated. Some names have been surprisingly left out, notably Bermuda, St. Augustine, Roanoke and Chesapeake. A curious 'second' peninsula is shown to the west of Florida which could be an early depiction of the Mississippi delta. The descriptive text below provides a brief overview of the history of North America to date. The map is taken from ""Geographisch Handtbuch ... Matthis Quaden ..."", German edition published in Colgne, 1600. Copperplate, very good condition." Burden 133; Cumming 24

Ribera, Francisco de, (1537 - 1591)
Köln, in officina Birckmannica sumptibus Arnoldi Mylii, 1600. Klein 8°. 697 Seiten, XXXVIII unpag. Bl. [Click Below for Full Description]

Malleus Maleficarum bound with 12 chapter's of Nider's writings on his Formicarius (pp. 694 - 806). Very good condition. Fine later leather binding. Two very significant works that were extremely influential. Occasional, infrequent, & scattered underlining, and relatively slight browning and foxing, considering the age.A very good conditioned book that is significant, rare, attractive, and bound with Nider's writing!I could find a 1519 modern rebound edition for $14,252 from an on-line seller, but could find no other 16th, 17th, 18th century editions."The Malleus Maleficarum, usually translated as the Hammer of Witches, is the best known and the most important treatise on witchcraft. It was written by the Catholic clergyman Heinrich Kramer (under his Latinized name Henricus Institoris) and first published in the German city of Speyer in 1487. It endorses extermination of witches and for this purpose develops a detailed legal and theological theory. It was a bestseller, second only to the Bible in terms of sales for almost 200 years. The Malleus elevates sorcery to the criminal status of heresy and prescribes inquisitorial practices for secular courts in order to extirpate witches. The recommended procedures include torture to effectively obtain confessions and the death penalty as the only sure remedy against the evils of witchcraft. At that time, it was typical to burn heretics alive at the stake and the Malleus encouraged the same treatment of witches. The book had a strong influence on culture for several centuries."
