Giovanni ORLANDI (Attivo 1590 -1640)
A bird's-eye view of the siege of Nagykanizsa, 1601, in the edition by Henri van Schoel. In 1601, a small Ottoman force held the fortress of Nagykanizsa in western Hungary against a much larger coalition army of the Habsburg Monarchy, while inflicting heavy losses on its besiegers. This battle was part of the Long War between the Ottoman Empire and the House of Habsburg, lasting from 1593 to 1606. The plate was published the first by Giovanni Orlandi in 1602. The van Shoel's edition, without date, probably was published around 1609, when Orlandi moved in Naples and sold his plates to the Flemish editor. Literature: Ganado (1994): VI, p. 200, n. 38. Matteo FLORIMI (1581-1613)
In basso a sinistra l'imprint editoriale Matteo flor. for. [Click Below for Full Description]

Cologne: laminis Iani buxemechers, [1600]. Single sheet, float-mounted and framed (sheet size: 14 4/8 x 11 4/8 inches; 9 x 11 4/8 inches to the neat line; framed size: 21 x 23 inches). A fine engraved map of North America by Johannes Bussemacher, the title and note within a frame beneath the map. A MAP OF NORTH AMERICA FROM THE FIRST ATLAS PUBLISHED IN GERMAN First edition, from Matthias Quad's general atlas of the world, "Geographisch Handtbuch", 1600. The atlas was largely an expansion of his earlier 'Europae totius orbis terrarum' of 1592. It was a landmark moment in publishing, the work being the first atlas to be composed in German. Johannes Bussemacher was employed by Quad to engrave the map of North America which is a reduced version of Cornelis de Jode's 'Americae pars borealis'. It is one of the earliest maps to concentrate on North America alone. De Jode condensed information for the map, which excludes the extreme northwest, from current wall maps and he was the first to make use of both John White and Jacques le Moyne's east coast cartography, although he inaccurately placed it. Quad here continues the mistake of placing the nomenclature of Virginia too far north. A long narrow waterway to the north represents the North West Passage; Lago de Conibas is also indicated. Some names have been surprisingly left out, notably Bermuda, St. Augustine, Roanoke and Chesapeake. A curious 'second' peninsula is shown to the west of Florida which could be an early depiction of the Mississippi delta. Below the map is a panel with descriptive text. Quad included this map in a se … [Click Below for Full Description]

AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE AND RARE MANUSCRIPT PORTOLAN CHART in pen and black, red, blue, brown and green ink, heightened in gold and silver, of the island of Sicily, the title within a ribbon banner heightened in gold and silver and surrounding the arms of the Kingdom of Sicily oriented to the south, showing an erupting Mount Etna, all important ports and towns given in Italian and Catalan, river systems and mountains, decorated with a large and beautiful compass rose radiating rhumb lines, an elaborately decorated scale lower right, the sea with magnificent galleons and terrifying sea monsters, all surrounded by a border of black and gold fillets. - Antique print, titled: 'Moravia.' - Detailed map centered on Brno. Moravia map, edited by Mercator and signed "Per Gerardum Mercatorem. Cum privilegio." in lower right corner, published by Jodocus Hondius. Copperplate engraving with hand colouring on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Gerard Mercator' after 'Jodocus Hondius'. Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in Flanders and studied in Louvain under Gemma Frisius, Dutch writer, astronomer and mathematician. The excellence of his work brought him the patronage of Charles V, but in spite of his favor with the Emperor he was caught up in the persecution of Lutheran protestants and charged with heresy, fortunately without serious consequences. No doubt the fear of further persecution influenced his move in 1552 to Duisburg, where he continued the production of maps, globes and instruments. Mercator's sons and grandsons, were all cartographers and made their contributions in various ways to his atlas. Rumold, in particular, was responsible for the complete edition in 1595. The map plates were bought in 1604 by Jodocus Hondius who, with his sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, published enlarged editions which dominated the map market for the following twenty to thirty years. Jodocus Hondius born 1563 in Ghent (Flanders) and grown up there. He became a globe maker and map engraver. In 1593 set up his business in Amsterdam after he spent some years in London. He was one of the most important engravers of his time and engraved maps for van den Keere, Waghenaer or Speed. Hondius … [Click Below for Full Description]
