Condition: Like New. Hurt(ful) Body : Performing and Beholding Pain 1600-1800, Hardcover by Macsotay, Tomas (EDT); Haven, Cornelis Van Der (EDT); Vanhaesebrouck, Karel (EDT), ISBN 1784995169, ISBN-13 9781784995164 This book offers a cross-disciplinary approach to pain and suffering in the early modern period, based on research in the fields of literary studies, art history, theatre studies, cultural history and the study of emotions. The volume's two-fold approach to the hurt body, defining 'hurt' from the perspectives of both victim and beholder - as well as their combined creation of a gaze - is unique. It establishes a double perspective about the riddle of 'cruel' viewing by tracking the shifting cultural meanings of victims' bodies, and confronting them to the values of audiences, religious and popular institutional settings and practices of punishment. It encompasses both the victim's presence as an image or performed event of pain and the conundrum of the look - the transmitted 'pain' experienced by the watching audience.

Here we have a SUPER RARE copy of Glamour, Greed & Glory : Dynasty. It is an EX LIBRARY copy. I would say it's in a very good condition. It has a soft cover, it's NOT a hardback. Over 700 pages. The cheapest edition I can find is on another very famous shopping site that begins with an A (:-)) and it's over £1600 there. As previously stated it is an EX LIBRARY copy and does have the usual library markings, all markings are shown in the photos. Book information and reviews - Dynasty fans are getting more than their share of one of the Super Soaps of the 1980's. With the news of the upcoming Dynasty Reunion special slated to film in April and rumours of a feature film on the horizon, fans of the series are dusting off their shoulder pads and picking up copies of the book 'Glamour, Greed & Glory: Dynasty" by Judith A. Moose and Paul D. Keylock. The 702-page book is filled with information from the show's humble beginnings to becoming one of the biggest success stories in television history. Also included in this monster-sized book is a synopsis on each episode complete with guest star guide, the most comprehensive character guide on the market, hundreds and hundreds of photographs, press releases, marketing campaigns, memorabilia and more. The book's foreword was written by Dynasty's leading diva Joan Collins and is followed by introductions by the book's two authors. Immigration by mostly Jewish refugees meant that the growth of Tel Aviv soon outpaced Jaffa's, which had a majority Arab population at the time. Tel Aviv and Jaffa were merged into a single municipality in 1950, two years after the establishment of the State of Israel. In the 16th century, Jaffa was conquered by the Ottomans and was administered as a village in the Sanjak of Gaza.Napoleon besieged the city in 1799 and killed scores of inhabitants; a plague epidemic followed, decimating the remaining population. The surrendering garrison of several thousand Muslims was massacred.Builder in Tel Aviv, 1920s Jaffa began to grow as an urban center in the early 18th century, when the Ottoman government in Istanbul intervened to guard the port and reduce attacks by Bedouins and pirates. However, the real expansion came during the 19th century, when the population grew from 2,500 in 1806 to 17,000 in 1886.; - vita of the artist: John Ogilby was a Scottish translator, impresario and cartographer. Such commentary is featured in the work 'Vaticinia'.This 1600 bilingual edition of 'Vaticinia' features a Fiore biography by Gabriel Barrio, descriptions of the prophecies of Anselm and Palmerio, illustrations of Girolamo Porro's prophetic wheel, as well as commentary on the prophecies of Pascal Regiselmo. It's unclear when the 'Emblemes' were first published, as there's been evidence of copies existing as early as 1561, despite it being originally thought to have appeared in publication in 1571. It is possible that, due to the religious turmoil at the time, the publication was delayed. The turmoil in question was the French Wars of Religion between the Roman Catholics and Huguenots between 1562 and 1598. Montenay herself was of the Reformed/Calvinist faith. Fukien, China: Yeh Nan-sung-t'ang, 1600. Four volumes in two, stab-bound in contemporary Korean paper covers, resewn, minor worming, very good in a cloth folding case. Zhu Xi (1130-200) was a Song Dynasty scholar who championed the importance of the Four Books (Analects, the Mencius, the Great Learning, and the Doctrine of the Mean) in Chinese philosophy during a time where the I Ching (Book of Changes) was considered the most important text. His heavily annotated editions of each became standard texts after his death. Mattheus QUAD
Colonia, 1600. Important early map of the North Polar regions, based upon Mercator's map of 1595. The North Pole is shown according to legend as a large rock in a giant whirlpool and surrounded by four islands that are separated by rivers. The magnetic north is depicted as a separate island rock just outside the polar mass. In North America is an very early reference to California (California regio, sola fama Hispanis nota), curiously shown north of the El streto de Anian. The map depicts the attempts of Frobisher and Davis to locate the northern passages to Asia. The map image is surrounded by a floral design with four roundels in each corner. These contain the title, the Faeroe Isles, the Shetland Isles, and the mythical island of Frisland. Burden, P.D. 134; Meurer, P.H. (Cologne) Qua 79 280 220mm

One of the earliest obtainable maps of the South American Continent, engraved in Cologne by Johann Bussemacher for Quad. The map is preceded by the maps of Forlani and De Jode and is one of only a few separate maps of the continent of South America published prior to 1600. Embellished with sea monsters and sailing ships, a narrow Strait of Magellan is shown, with a large unknown southern continent. Magellan's ship is illustrated in the Pacific. Several interesting annotations are shown in Latin. 282 210mm [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Rara." "Striking example of Quad's map of North America, based upon De Jode's landmark map of 1593. Jode's map is one of the earliest maps to concentrate on North America alone. Quad here continues the mistake of placing the nomenclature of Virginia too far north. A long narrow waterway to the north represents the North West Passage; Lago de Conibas is also indicated. Some names have been surprisingly left out, notably Bermuda, St. Augustine, Roanoke and Chesapeake. A curious ‘second’ peninsula is shown to the west of Florida which could be an early depiction of the Mississippi delta. The descriptive text below provides a brief overview of the history of North America to date. The map is taken from "Geographisch Handtbuch . EYLEND, MARTIN.
, . . VD17, 23:287401X (3 copies); Jähns, pp. 1105-1106 note; not in Cockle; Sloos. Rare second(?) edition, in the original German, of a brief compendious handbook of fortification following the Dutch methods and tactics. In the years 1600 to 1625, the Dutch Prince of Orange, Maurits van Nassau (1567-1625), proved the efficacy of the new Dutch ideas and techniques in fortification and siege warfare in the Eighty Years' War against Spain. With the German States now embroiled in the hostilities that spread to other parts of Europe as the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), there was a great practical interest in these new methods. While foreign authors were beginning to incorporate Dutch methods in their manuals, these tended to be up-market works, out of the reach of the common soldier or even many officers, and they also failed to keep up with the rapidly developing Dutch art of fortification. The present cheap compendium, indifferently printed on coarse paper, gives a much better idea of what common soldiers, lower-level officers and the interested general public would have learned about the new Dutch art of fortification than the great works by famous authors.Title-page and last page browned and the former also has a small stain, otherwise in very good condition. A fortification handbook for the common man, rare in all editions.

Cent Emblemes Christiens De Damoiselle Georgette De Montenay
1600. A very scarce edition of Georgette de Montenay's 'Emblemes ou Devises Chrestiennes'. 'Emblemes' contains one-hundred emblems, which are typically morals or poems accompanied by illustrations, a form of religious text that was very popular during the 16th and 17th centuries. Montenay's 'Emblemes' are mostly Protestant in their views. An undated copy. ESTC and Copac only have records of the 1619 polygot edition, which differs to this copy in pagination and translation content. The 1619 edition is ESTC record no. S94206. This copy is lacking the title page (A1) and leaves F3 and F4. 1619 edition has a preface and a riddle to the rear, of which this copy is potentially lacking but there is no evidence to the gatherings that this printing had the preface. When collated using the catch-words this copy is lacking pages one, four, twenty-eight, twenty-nine, seventy-four, seventy-eight, seventy-nine, eighty, eighty-one, eighty-two, eighty-five, eighty-six, eighty-nine, ninety-five, and ninety-six. Closed tears to the fore edge of pages twenty, forty, and forty-one. Montenay was taken into the court of Jeanne d'Albret, the Qu … [Click Below for Full Description]

'The first major English scientific treatise based on experimental methods of research. Gilbert was chiefly concerned with magnetism; but as a digression he discusses in his second book the attractive effect of amber (electrum), and thus may be regarded as the founder of electrical science. He coined the terms electricity, electric force, and electric attraction. His versorium, a short needle balanced on a sharp point to enable it to move freely, is the first instrument designed for the study of electrical phenomena, serving both as an electroscope and electrometer. He contended that the earth was one great magnet; he distinguished magnetic mass from weight; and he worked on the application of terrestrial magnetism to navigation. Gilbert's book influenced Kepler, Bacon, Boyle, Newton and, in particular, Galileo, who used his theories [in the Dialogo] to … [Click Below for Full Description]
