Bibliothecae inclytae Reipub. Augustanae utriusque tum Graecae tum Latinae Librorurm et impressorum et manu exaratorum Catalogus

[Compiled by Georg Henisch]. Typographical border round title (very slightly shaved at outer margin). 559 pp., [38] leaves. Agenda chancery 4to (303 x 96 mm.), cont. pigskin-backed wooden boards (smallish stain to first two leaves, one wooden corner chipped), orig. clasps & catches. Augsburg: V. Schönigk, 1600. A wonderfully well-preserved copy, from the private collection of Helmuth Domizlaff, of the second earliest catalogue of an institutional library (preceded only by the extremely rare catalogue of the Leyden University Library in 1595). Augsburg was, after the Palatina, the most important public library in Germany and the present catalogue became a valuable reference tool for the contemporary scholar. Our catalogue of the library of the Imperial City of Augsburg is one of the rarest of the great institutional library catalogues and certainly, from the point of view of its format, one of the strangest. It was printed in the very unusual agenda format, probably for ease of carrying (it would fit in a deep pocket). While it has been speculated that some copies were also printed in quarto size, I do not believe any such example exists. Archer Taylor wrote, in his Book Catalogues, regarding this catalogue, "it is said to have been printed in one hundred copies only" (p. 94). Augsburg's library "must have been one of the most important public libraries in the Europe of its time: many thousand works by over 4,000 authors are accurately described and arranged according to first names. It must have represented a valuable reference tool for the contemporary scholar."-Grolier Club, Bibliography, 41. Both books and manuscripts are described. The author index at end, arranged by first name, is extremely advanced and includes authors of secondary texts, editors, etc. Georg Henisch (1549-1618), philologist and mathematician, studied medicine at Basel and went to Augsburg as professor of logic and mathematics. He served as head of the medical school, president of the city's gymnasium, and librarian of the Augsburg City Library. He was a highly esteemed scholar of the time as an editor of Greek texts and as an astronomer. Very fine copy, in fresh condition. Rather taller than the Breslauer copy (288 mm.). Contemporary ownership inscription of Joseph Anthony Rauch, dated 1733. ? Pollard & Ehrman, Table XXX. Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 45.

Le Theatre d'Agriculture et Mesnage des Champs

Finely engraved architectural title-page by Mallery with Henri IV seated on his throne in a garden, eight fine woodcut vignettes, fine woodcut initials, and 13 large woodcuts in Chapters XIII & XIV. 9 p.l., 3-1004, [20] pp. Folio, 18th cent. mottled calf (minor scuffing to binding extremities), spine gilt, contrasting lettering piece on spine. Paris: J. Metayer, 1600. First edition of the first great French work on agronomy - in its widest sense - to be published. In this book, Serres devotes substantial sections to hunting, cookery, practical medicine, irrigation, forestry, viticulture, vegetable gardening, medicinal plants, fruit trees, silk cultivation, the management of servants, etc., etc. The author also discusses the duties of the mistress of the house and remedies for all manner of diseases suffered by men and animals. The work is divided into eight books, one of which is devoted entirely to wine and the culture of the grape. At the head of each book is a pretty woodcut vignette (145 x 68 mm.) enclosed within an ornamental border. These show various scenes on the estate: cows, the dairy, etc.; in the next ploughing and sowing are in progress; the third illustrates viticulture and the wine press; others show milking scenes, bee-hives, landscape gardening, forestry, and at the end a hunting scene with falcons. Serres (1539-1619), a Protestant, took part in the religious struggles in his native Vivarais. After 1573, he retired to his family's property of Pradel where for more than a quarter of a century he tried to revive the estate. It was there that he wrote this great book, based on his own experience and on the classical texts concerning agriculture. Henri IV also had taken a strong interest in the economic regeneration of France and the present work became, in effect, a manifesto for the King's new policies. Serres became a royal counselor in 1599 and advised Henri IV on various agricultural and economic projects. A very good and fresh copy. Minor foxing and a few unimportant marginal dampstains. Single tiny wormhole in lower margin of first third of book. ? En Français dans le Texte 79. Simon, Bibliotheca Bacchica, II, 619. Vicaire, pp. 788-89.

Woodcut printer's device on title, Gilbert's woodcut coat of arms on verso, numerous woodcut diagrams & illus. in the text, & one folding woodcut plate (one fold with a careful repair). 8 p.l. 240 pp. Folio, cont. limp vellum (some occasional spotting, a few unimportant dampstains), ties gone. London: P. Short, 1600. First edition, and a very fine and fresh copy, of the first major English scientific treatise based on experimental methods of research and the foundation work of magnetism and electrical science. Gilbert uses here for the first time the terms "electricity," "electric force," and "electric attraction." Book I "deals with the history of magnetism from the earliest legends about the lodestone to the facts and theories known to Gilbert's contemporaries…In the last chapter of book I, Gilbert introduced his new basic idea which was to explain all terrestrial magnetic phenomena: his postulate that the earth is a giant lodestone and thus had magnetic properties…The remaining five books of the De magnete are concerned with the five magnetic movements: coition, direction, variation, declination, and revolution. Before he began his discussion of coition, however, Gilbert carefully distinguished the attraction due to the amber effect from that caused by the lodestone. This section, chapter 2 of book II, established the study of the amber effect as a discipline separate from that of magnetic phenomena, introduced the vocabulary of electrics, and is the basis for Gilbert's place in the history of electricity."-D.S.B., V, p. 397. This is an early issue of the first edition, containing manuscript corrections (in the author's hand?) on pages 22, 47, 130, and 221. The large woodcut plate in this copy is on an untrimmed sheet; usually it has been cut down. A really fine and crisp copy of this influential book, preserved in a morocco-backed box. Armorial stamp on verso of title. ? Dibner, Heralds of Science, 54.         Theses de hasione et hasibili qualitate [...]. No place, c. 1600.

1600. 4to. Latin ms. (black and red ink) on paper. (12) pp. Disbound. Contemporary ms. copy of this mock disputation which spawned an entire genre of "hare literature", also translated into German. "The early years of the last decade of the 16th century saw the publication of a pamphlet dressed up as an academic disputation, entitled 'Theses de hasione et hasibili qualitate'. It bears no place or year of printing; its author and publisher are unknown [...] The text, written in a precise and almost elegant Latin, is too critical to be regarded as a mere student prank. The author, it would seem, was probably a witty scholar rather than a student, one endowed with a sense of humour but who first of all wished to show up the deficiencies of his times, thus contributing to the popular genre of fool's literature" (cf. Lindner 288). By 1741 the work had been republished at least 25 times. - Browned throughout due to paper; some edge defects. T. p. ruled in red. Cf. Erman/Horn I, 7416.

Madonna con bambino e San Giovannino

1600. Acquaforte. Etching, circa 1590/1600. Stylistically, this extremely rare work can be placed halfway between mannerism and the sixteenth - century Italian school. Indeed, there are some similarities with the Fontainebleau school which are refined through the etching technique. It can probably be ascribed to an artist who worked in northern Italy. Magnificent proof, printed on contemporary laid paper with unidentifiable watermark, trimmed at the platemark with borderline, traces of red pencil - mark visible on verso, otherwise in very good conditions. 123 163

Erster (-ander) Theil, aller Schrifften, Bücher unnd Tractätlein. Bruck an der Thaya, Druckerei des Prämonstratenserstiftes, 1599-1600.

1600. Folio. 2 vols. With figural titble borders and 13 woodcuts in the text. (7), 663 [but: 661], (15) ff. (17), 546 [but: 545], (10) ff. Contemp. vellum; spines and covers attractively gilt; gilt supralibros. First edition of the collected works of the Tyrol Jesuit Scherer (1559-1605), rector of the Viennese college and a fervent preacher of counter-reformation. His polemics against Osiander, Heerbrand, and other Lutherans occasioned a long series of printed refutations. Part 2 contains (at the end) the famous children's catechism. - Printed at the first and only 16th and 17th century press in Bruck an der Thaya (Louckem pod Znojmem) in Moravia, established in 1595 by abbot Sebastian II from Baden near Vienna. The printer was probably Bartholomäus Albert Fuhrmann; until the press was closed in 1608, it produced merely 22 known works. - Title page with contemp. ms. note by Johann Rupert Hegemüller, to whom the author himself had presented the volumes as a gift. Later in the collection of the Austrian local historian Candid von Engelshofen (1803-66; with his library stamp and shelfmark on title page); then in the library of the Bohemian nobleman Franz Graf Thun-Hohenstein (1809-70; with his heraldic bookplate on the front pastedown). Last in the collection of the Austrian industrialist Dr. Friedrich Petrina (1911-2004; with his etched bookplate on front pastedown). - Title page with insignificant defects to upper edge. Spine of vol. 2 with slight defects to upper spine-end; attractive giltstamping largely oxydized. Altogether a fine and clean copy with interesting provenance. VD 16, S 2677 und 2678 (pt. 2 of BSB copy incomplete). De Backer/Sommervogel VII, 761, 38 (pt. 2 incomplete: ends with p. 335). Wetzer/Welte 10, 1786. Cf. Benzing 69.

The "Standard" edition prepared by Dr. F. S. Paris, of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and H. Therold, fellow of Magdalene. In this Bible a serious attempt was made to correct the text of the King James' version by amending the spelling and punctuation, unifying and extending the use of italics, and removing printers' errors. Marginal annotations, which had been growing in some Bibles since 1600, although excluded from others, were finally received into the place they have occupied ever since sundry new ones being added. Lloyd's dates and chronological notes were also adopted and increase, and the marginal referees were much enlarged. 16.5" x 10.75" Shelf

Essayes, By Sir William Corne-Walyes the Younger, Knight. [With:] A Second Part of Essayes. Written by Sir William Cornwallis, the Younger, Knight

[London:] Printed for Edmund Mattes, 1600 [&] London: Printed for Edmond Matts, 1601, 1600. First editions of both volumes. Rare. STC 5775; ESTC S108699; NCBEL I, 2017; Pforzheimer 214. Calf a little rubbed and worn; vellum soiled and cockled; very good copies.. 2 vols, small octavo, volume one in late 18th century tree-calf, black leather label, gilt decorations and lettering; volume two in contemporary vellum, spine lettered in manuscript. Vignette title-pages. A seminal collection of English essays and the first book by Sir William Cornwallis (c. 1579-1614), who along with Francis Bacon and Henry Peacham - and following the model of Michel de Montaigne - helped to make the informal essay an important part of 17th century English literature. Cornwallis draws from a variety of classical and contemporary sources, including Tasso, Commines, and Guicciardini; he quotes the Old and New Testaments, proverbs, fables, sermons, and commonplace books in his discourses on matters such as fame, affection, praise and glory, resolution, vanity, justice, words, flattery, etc. This is a mixed set of the two volumes; they are sometimes catalogued separately as individual books, but the second series is clearly a continuation of the first: Essays 1-25 constitute volume one and 26-50 volume two. Bookplate of Sylvain van de Weyer and John Clawson in volume one; signature of Thomas Ryme, dated 1615, on the title-page of volume two, and on the final blank is the signature of Samuel Deaken, dated 1727. Bookplate of Robert S. Pirie on the front free endpaper of volume one; the two volumes were purchased by Pirie from bookseller John Fleming in 1966.

THE RARE FIRST EDITION of Fabrici's first published anatomical work, which is in three parts (De visione sive de oculo visus organo, De voce sive de larynge vocis organo, De auditu sive de aure auditus organo) and dealing with the eye, the throat and the ear, illustrated with detailed engravings. "The major portion of this work on the organs of vision, speech, and hearing is devoted to the eye, and it is clear that Fabricius was one of the first to grasp the true form and proper location of the lens. Although his description of the ear is sound, it contributed no new knowledge about the ear or the sense of hearing. An extremely competent comparative anatomist, he was at his best in dealing with the laryngeal apparatus" (Heirs of Hippocrates 365). This work, together with his many other anatomical studies were intended to form a monumental Totius animalis fabricae theatrum, which however never appeared in print. Girolamo Fabrici, also known from the Latin form of his name as Hieronymus Fabricius ab Aquapendente, taught anatomy at the University of Padua, where he had previously studied under Gabriele Falioppio, himself a student of Vesalius. Fabrici published a series of works on aspects of anatomy, including the present work on human speech organs and the physiology of voice production. Visit our website for more images.         [Coutume. Champagne. 1600].

Eichstätt, Urban Schrötter, printed by Franz Strauss, [ca. 1690/95?]. 12mo. In Latin and German (facing pages). Contemporary tanned sheepskin, blind-tooled spine.

Bircher, Barock 1600-1720, B14340; KVK & WorldCat (3 copies); VD17, 23:691814K (1, the same, copy); cf. Pritzel 8519. Very rare first and only Schrötter edition, with the text in Latin and German on facing pages, of an alphabetical catalogue of about 1500 plants in the botanical garden of Leiden University, with an appendix listing about 300 plants native to Leiden, first prepared by Florens Schuyl and published in Latin by Johan Elzevier in 1668.Though clearly based on Vorstius?s catalogue, which the Elzeviers had published in 1636, Schuyl?s catalogue expands the list considerably, including for the first time South African plants. It also includes the date palm and some Far Eastern plants. Urban Schrötter, court gardener at the botanical garden of the Prince Bishops of Eichstätt, apparently saw this edition through the press. The present edition appears to be the only work listing Schrötter as publisher, so he may have been more editor than publisher in the normal sense. With an erroneous manuscript attribution to Gottschalk on the title-page and date 1697. In very good condition. The binding is somewhat worn but still good. Very rare Latin and German edition of Schuyl's catalogue of plants at the Leiden University botanical garden.

The Romane Historie (.) Written by T. Livius of Padua. Also, the Breviaries of L. Florus: with a Chronologie to the whole Historie: and the Topographie of Rome in old time.

London Adam Islip 1600 - Folio, (10), 1404, (40) pp., woodcut title, initials, head-and tailpieces, woodcut of Queen Elizabeth, to whom this edition is dedicated, on verso of title page and portrait of Livy. Contemporary dark brown calf rebacked, blind-panelled boards, raised bands, corners worn, a fine example. Philemon Holland's Livy was the first in a series of unabridged translations of canonical Roman works that made him, in Thomas Fuller's famous phrase "the translator general in his age" (Peter Culhane, Philemon Holland's Livy). "Holland's first book, the first complete rendering of Livy into English, was published in 1600 when he was nearly fifty. It was a work of great importance, presented in a grand folio volume of 1458 pages, and dedicated to the queen. The translation set out to be lucid and unpretentious, and achieved its aim with marked success. It is accurate, and often lively, and although it does not attempt to imitate the terseness of Latin, it avoids prolixity. As part of his book Holland translated two other substantial works—an ancient epitome of Roman history which provides an outline of the lost books of Livy, and Bartolomeo Marliani's guide to the topography of Rome—as well as some smaller texts. These were taken from the edition of Livy published in Paris in 1573; by translating them, Holland was making available in English a great learned compendium of historical knowledge, not simply a single ancient author" (ODNB). One of the greatest and certainly the most popular of the Roman writers of history, Titus Livius began his great work between 27 and 25 B.C., completing it only shortly before his death about ten years later. In it he gives the complete history of the city of Rome, from its foundation to the death of Augustus. Because he was writing under the emperor Augustus, Livy's history emphasizes the great triumphs of Rome. He wrote his history with embellished accounts of Roman heroism in order to promote the new type of government implemented by Augustus when he became emperor. In Livy's preface to his history, he said that he did not care whether his personal fame remained in darkness, as long as his work helped to "preserve the memory of the deeds of the world's preeminent nation."         HISPANIAE nova descriptio

Map of the Iberian Peninsula by Matteo Florimi, published in Siena aroun 1600. The map is a copy of Abraham Ortelius Regni Hispaniae Postomnivm Editiones Locvpletissima Descriptio, first edition published in Anversa, 1570. The engraving could be attribued to the Flemish engraver Arnoldo di Arnoldi, who had already worked for Giovanni Antonio Magini. The partnership between Florimi and Arnoldi dates back to yeras 1600 - 1602, and together realized a certain number of maps. Etching and engraving, trimmed to the platemark, good condition. No other editions are known, however, some later examples of the map, can be attributed to the publisher Pietro Petrucci, who acquired most of the Florimi's plates. Siena Siene Van der Heijden (1993): n. 17. 478 357

        Asia Partivorbis maxima..

Scarce early map of the Asia from Quad's Atlas Geographische Handbuch, published by Johann Bussemacher. Quad's map is a marvelous amalgam of early cartographic information and mis - inforamtion. The Korean peninsula does not appear. Japan is shaped in a very curious C shape. The Philippines is oddly misconfigured and much of SE Asia is mishaped or conjectural. Rich dark impression and full color, with wide margins. Colonia Cologne 300 210
