ERASMUS DESIDERIUS
sumptibus haeredum Andreae Wecheli, 1599. Cm. 33,5, cc. (6), coll. 1984, cc. (102). Marchio tip., testatine e capilettera xil. Orlando Malavolti (Siena 1515 - 1596)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Asia (Arabia- India- Southeast Asia- Japan- Australia) Issued Venice, [1582] 1599 by Giovanni Lorenzo D'Anania / Ruscelli & Rosaccio. Printed by heirs of Melchoir Sessa. Fourth Edition, second issue using the re-engraved 1582 plate in 1598-99. Italian text on verso. Note the distorted depiction of the Arabian peninsula and coastline of East Africa along the left side, Madagascar at bottom left corner. Asia, China and Tartary similarly distorted. Japan is much too large and misplaced, as is New Guinea. At the lower right corner is the tip of Australia, here referred to as Land Unknown (Terre Incognita). Taprobana is curiously named on Sumatra. Tip of Alaska seen top right edge. This scarce late issue used the 1561 plate but the plate was not used again after this 1599 printing and this map has no further appearances or printings. In near VG or better condition, minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, some faint minor offsetting scarcely worthy of mention, overall the image is clean, well preserved and very attractive. Original fold line as issued. Sheet measures c. 13" x 9 1/8". Printed area measures c. 10" x 7 1/2". Tooley, Dictionary of Mapmakers, v. 4., p. 87. Shirley, Maps in Atlases in British Library, T.
