Boeckel, Jan van.
Hamburg Möller, 1599. (19 x 15 cm). 18 nn. Bll. [Click Below for Full Description]

On display is a unique example of a 1599 Geneva Bible printed by the deputies of Christopher Barker printer to the Queens most excellent majestie. It contains the Old and New Testament. The cover is a light Brown. Both boards and spine are firmly attatched and the book is tight and put together very well. The truly rare part of this Bible is the age. Printed just 39 years after the very first complete English version of the first Geneva Bible. It is one of only a few extremely rare Bibles printed in the 1500's to have survived the centuries. This is an excellent example of a 1500's Bible and of course with virtually anything of this age it is incomplete. While not having checked every page it does appear to be mostly complete in the New Testament. It does end in Revelations chapter 22. That is followed by a first and second Table which is entitled a brief Table of the interpretation of the proper names. The Old Testament starts with Exodus chapter 13. While it is incomplete, it is extraordinarily rare to find a Bible in the 1500's in any condition much less completely rebound with damaged pages mostly repaired. Pictures above show this. Another unusually rare part to this Bible is the type print itself. While most Geneva Bibles were printed in blackletter, this particular is an early example of roman typeface. Very unique to this time period. It measures 9" x 7 1/4 " x 1 3/4" and weighs in at a little over 2 pounds. This is a Quarto Bible which in the 1500's would make it a family Bible. It is of course used and does show the expected wear and tear associated with its age. … [Click Below for Full Description]

LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huygen van
Alberti Henrici, 1599. Printed in Den Haag. Folio, contemporary vellum. Two parts in one volume. First Latin Edition. Engraved title, full-page author portrait, 36 engraved plates (all double-page or folding) and 7 folding engraved maps. Rare first Latin edition of the explorer, merchant, and historian Jan Huygen van Linschoten's (1553-1611) famous travel book, an account rich in information concerning the Dutch expansion in the East Indies and here richly illustrated with the same 36 engraved plates and 5 engraved maps of the Dutch first edition (1596), the important world map of Plancius, and the celebrated - and often missing - first edition of Willem Barentsz's (1550-97) iconic polar map. "This edition of Linschoten is the only one in which Barentsz's famous map of the North Polar Regions appears. For some reason or other, possibly on account of the size and thick paper on which it was engraved, this map of Barentsz is nearly always lacking in otherwise perfect copies of this work" (Humphreys, p. ix). The map is considered the "first contribution of the Dutch cartography related to the Arctic Seas" and here illustrates a unique digest - not found outside this edition of Linschoten - of Gerrit de Veer's diary concerning Barentsz's three arctic journeys, a digest likely compiled and translated from the Dutch by Linschoten himself who accompanied Barentsz on two of his Arctic voyages. The Barentsz map is the first of the Arctic based upon first-hand exploration, and which dispenses with the mythological arctic islands of Mercator. Barentsz sailed further north towards the … [Click Below for Full Description]

REBUFFI, Pierre
Lugduni : Apud Hæredes Gulielmi Rouillii ., M.D. XCIX. 1599. 1599 LAW Commentary on Constitutions French Roman Juris Civilis Pierre Rebuffi The ‘Institutes of Justinian’ is a portion of the full Corpus Juris Civilis, largely based on the Institutes of Gaius. Justinian sought to reform Roman law and education. This work was originally intended to be used by law students, but they were not solely used as a textbook, they actually carried legal weight as law! These institutes have been edited with commentary for decades, some more popular than others, but Pierre Rebuffi’s is a highly important late 16th-century edition. Rebuffi was a French jurist who was perhaps the most famous legal scholar of his day. He is most remembered for his ‘Commentary on the Constitutions’ which is a collection of various titles on Roman Law – • ‘Tractatus de litteris obligatoriis regio sigillo’ • ‘Tractatus de chirographorum and cedularum recognitione’ • ‘Tractatus de sententiis praejudicialibus’ • ‘De sententiis executoriis’ • ‘De evocationibus utilis’ • ‘De litteris civilibus’ • ‘De supplicationibus’ This 1599 edition features Royal ordinances printed completely in French, as Rebuffi’s commentaries appear in Latin. A fascinating late 16th-century edition! Item number: #4908 Price: $599 REBUFFI, Pierre Commentaria in constitutiones, seu ordinationes regias. : Non solum iuris studiosis, verum etiam pragmaticis vtilissima, in quibus facilis ad praxim Curiarum Franciæ via, & iurium intellectus explicantur Lugduni : Apud Hæredes Gulielmi Rouillii ., M.D. XCIX. 1599. Item #33487 This Gretser's important Apologia on Life of Ignatius Loyola, one of the most fascinating hagiographies ever written on the Jesuit order founder, describing how he [Loyola] would drive away Satan, who appeared in "a shining and glistening form" with his staff, like a "troublesome cur." It also describes Loyola's great humility, living amongst the poor. Gretser's Apologia is a massive defence of the great saint, filled with reference to other great saints, including early Orthodox fathers such as Gregory of Nazianzenus, Latin fathers like St. Augustine and Jerome, as well as English Catholic martyrs killed during Henry VIII's Reformation. Gretser himself, then as now, was/is regarded as one of the most prominent Jesuit theologians. "He was recognized as one of the best controversialists of his time, and was highly esteemed by Pope Clement VIII, Emperor Ferdinand II, and Maximilian I of Bavaria. Some of the greatest of his age, such as Cardinal Bellarmine and Marcus Welser, corresponded with him and consulted … [Click Below for Full Description]

BEHAM, Sebald; Salomon 'Petit' Bernard
[8] 91 [3] Sixteenth century woodcuts after Hans Sebald Beham (1536) and Salomon Bernard (1558) extracted from a 1599 Bible by a Douai reader in the 1830's. The 87 woodcuts have been mounted by 'G D', one to the recto of each leaf, illustrating both Old and New Testaments and including images of Eve's emergence from Adam's side, Noah's Ark, manna from heaven and repeated reworkings of the life story and teachings of Christ which illustrated from the four Gospels. The Old Testament images are based on the 1536 sequence of woodcuts by Hans Sebald Beham and Salomon Bernard's 1558 illustrations to the New Testament. The collection of woodcuts were retrieved and bound thus no doubt from a damaged copy of the 1599 Dutch Bible in quarter calf over marbled boards with the bookplate of the 'Bibliotheque congrégation de Notre Dame, Maison Des Oiseaux' (presumably the convent at 84 rue de Sèvres in Paris) in the 1830's. The person responsible, 'G.D.', has written a scholarly two page manuscript introduction to the work, explaining the provenance of the images and giving the book a manuscript title page: 'Figures de l'Ecriture sainte. Ancien et Nouveau Testament. MDXCIX. Douai. 1836.' He explains that 'Les Figures réunis dans ce petit volume appartiennent a une Bible Flamande...' It's not possible to say whether GD was connected with the English college in Douai but it is perhaps significant that the volume has ended up, for now, in England.

THE GENEVA BIBLE Pirate Edition 1599 The "Geneva Bible," the first complete Bible in English printed in roman type with verse divisions. "More scholarly than any previous translation, it was largely the work of William Whittingham, afterwards Dean of Durham, Thomas Sampson and Anthony Gilby; the translation being financed by Francis Withers. In contrast to Tyndale's and Coverdale's early versions, the tenor of the Geneva Bible's arguments and explanatory notes was Calvinist rather than Lutheran. In the New Testament the terms "elder" and "congregation" replaced "priest" and "church." The notes to the Apocalypse are stridently anti-Papist. The community of Marian exiles in Geneva who translated and printed this first edition followed the distinctive features of contemporary French Genevan Bibles--convenient size, roman type, numbered verse divisions, and the inclusion of historical tables, explanatory pictures, plans, and maps ... These visual aids reflect Genevan concern that even the 'simple reader' should understand obscure passages of scripture" (Luborsky & Ingram). Another innovation in the Bible was the introduction of many famous phrases that were retained in the Authorized Version, such as "smite them hip and thigh," and "vanity of vanities." Although never formally adopted in England, the Geneva Bible remained the most popular of all versions for three generations, with one hundred and forty editions printed between 1560 and 1644. It was this popularity that led to the illegal printing of thousands of copies that were smuggled into England... and sold at significant … [Click Below for Full Description]
