SPONTONE, Ciro.
Verona, for G. Battista Pigozzo and Andrea de Rossi, 1599 [colophon 1600]. 4to, pp. [xlviii], 389, [1] + [2, errata]; with typographic tables, engraved initials, running titles; a very good, fresh copy in contemporary vellum, spine bearing the author's name and title in a large calligraphic hand; a very genuine and attractive book, from the Jesuit college of Alcalá (inscription on the title-page).First edition of a rare - and in parts typographically striking - treatise on political science conceived as a comprehensive riposte to Machiavelli's Prince. Ciro Spontone (1552-1613) wrote his 'anti-Machiavelli' whilst serving as secretary to the Duke of Mantua Vincenzo I Gonzaga, with whom he would, in 1601, take part in the Hungarian war against the Turks.Having already tried his hand at mirrors of princes theory nine years earlier with a work entitled 'La corona del Principe', which made ample use of iconic metaphors to illustrate the virtues of the ideal ruler, with the Dodici libri del governo Spontone adopts a more severe, comprehensive and theoretically structured approach to the science of statecraft. He explores it in all its implications: from royal prerogatives and obligations to the structure and domains of ministries, of governing and legislative bodies, of executive and policing institutions, to the classification of the people, the preserving of peace, the circumstances which lead to war and the possible consequences of war. His description is perhaps at its most effective and prescriptive in the initial 'table': ten pages given over to a graphic representation of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Orlando Malavolti (Siena 1515 - 1596)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Francesco VILLAMENA (Assisi, 1564 - Roma, 7 Luglio 1624)
Bulino, 1597 -1599, in basso al centro "Anibal Caracius Invent. F. Villamena. [Click Below for Full Description]

Francesco VILLAMENA (Assisi, 1564 - Roma, 7 Luglio 1624)
Bulino, 1597 -1599, in basso al centro "Anibal Caracius Invent. F. Villamena. [Click Below for Full Description]

A report giving advice on preserving the King of Portugal's territories in the "Pegu" (Bago) Empire in southern Burma, now part of Myanmar, and Portugal's trade and commerce there. The Portuguese conquered these territories in 1599/1600, with the city of Pegu as its capital, and kept a strong presence there even after the capital moved to Ava in 1634. Two notes on the back of the last page indicate that the document was copied from the papers of "Fr Luis", meaning Frei Luis de Montoia. It includes information on the role of Felipe Mascarenhas, Governor of Ceylon 1630-1631 & 1640-1645, who was in Pegu in the 1630s and was to serve as Viceroy of Portuguese India 1645-1651.Two wormholes at the foot of the first leaf, not affecting any text, otherwise in very good condition. .

Please see listing and photos for a complete description of Bible condition. ORIGINAL 1599 GENEVA BIBLE WITH APOPCRYPHA & CONCORDANCES Available for purchase is an ORIGINAL "Geneva Bible" printed in 1599. The Geneva Bible is a 16th-century English translation produced by expatriate Calvinists who fled to Geneva from England during the reign of Queen "Bloody" Mary. It was the English Bible of the Protestant Reformation and the Bible of the Puritans and Pilgrims. The Pilgrims brought the 1599 Geneva Bible with them when they arrived in the New World in 1620, and it was the doctrine upon which America was founded. It predates the King James Bible of the Anglican Church (first published in 1611), which most early American colonists wanted nothing to do with anyway, since they were fleeing the religious oppression of the Church of England. It's rather ironic that Protestants of all denominations today embrace the King James Version of the Bible (which reads 90% the same as the Geneva), even though the King James Version is not a Protestant Bible. Most Protestants have never even heard of the Geneva Bible, the Bible of their own heritage. The Geneva Bible broke new ground for printed Bibles. It was the first Bible to assign chapter and verses to the text and its copious marginal notes qualify it to be called the first study Bible. More than 300,000 n … [Click Below for Full Description]

The first authorized edition, in the original Dutch, appeared in 1599 in Delft, and includes a copy of Hogenberg's map. Van Meteren's work was the first history of the Netherlands to treat the revolt against the Spanish up to the foundation of the Dutch Republic but was banned by the States-General, though the ban was lifted six months later.
