Rara. World map, an oval surrounded by an acractive scrolled border with birds and flowers. Tha map itself, which shows the track of Cavendishìs circumnavigation, appears to have been taken form the centre part of the map used by Cornels Claesz, a year earlier (Shirley 215). De bry map may also be found in later parts of his works, including his Minor Voyages. Copperplate, with fine original colouring, in very good conditions. Bible. English. 1599. Geneva-Tomson-Junius.
Impr. by the deputies of Christopher Barker. At least five editions appeared with this 1599 imprint, almost none of which were actually printed that year. Darlow and Moule note, "The phenomena of the various editions described under the year 1599 . . . constitute one of the most curious problems in the bibliography of the English Bible." Clearly there was a demand (by English Puritans and by Pilgrims in the Low Countries and America, among others) for Geneva Bibles, with their strongly Protestant marginal notes, well after they could no longer be printed openly in London. Pocock is of the opinion that recognizing this, Robert Barker "adopted" various early-17th-century Amsterdam and Dort Genevas; the back-dating and "back-attributing" on their title-pages would have associated these with and effectively disguised them as a popular and approved Bible printed by his own father, who died in that year and whose press he took over in the year following. STC attributes the whole array of editions purely to Stam in Amsterdam, who as publisher also would have benefitted from the fame and innocuousness in England of Christopher Barker's actual 1599 edition, though he would have had no reason in Dutch law for disguise. The text at hand here is the Geneva version (as usual, without the Apocrypha), with Tomson's revised New Testament and Junius's Revelation -- but this copy thoroughly muddies the waters with a title-page supplied from another copy, possibly even the genuine 1599 printing. The New Testament title-page also gives 1599 (as does the colophon), but is original to the … [Click Below for Full Description]

BURY, Richard de (i.e. Richard Aungerville, bishop of Durham. 1281-1345)
Oxford : Joseph Barnes 1599 . FIRST ENGLISH EDITION Small 4to, (180 x 127mm), *4, A-I4 (inc. H4 blank), the printed marginalia shaved in a few places, in one case affecting a few letters, some underlining and occasional ms. annotations in a 17th. century hand, bound in antique-style limp vellum, yapp fore-edges, green silk ties, edges stained red. Provenance : Inscribed on title page "Ex dono Roberti Ashly, Martii 12o 1639" - probably to be indentified with Robert Ashly (1565-1641), described by Wood in his Athenae Oxoniensis as being a fellow commoner of Hart Hall in 1580, although from his autobiography it appears that he was also of Alban Hall and Magdalen College. He left Oxford without a degree and was called to the bar of the Middle Temple. He is known to have been a bibliophile, speaking in the preface to his "Almansor" (London, 1627) of having seen, in the library of the Escurial, "A glorious golden library of Arabian books." He donated much of his collection to the Temple Library. [see D.N.B.] This is the first edition to be printed in England of the earliest published work on that theme which is at the very heart of 'our' world - the love of books. Written in the early 14th century by the great English book-collector and patron of learning, Richard d'Aungerville (better known as Richard de Bury), it was first printed in 1473 in Cologne, reprinted at Speier in 1483 and Paris in 1500. The present edition, (the 4th), was edited by Thomas James of New College, Oxford, and dedicated to his patron Sir Thomas Bodley. LAMBERT, Johann Heinrich.
Lambert's second book was "intended for the artist wishing to give a perspective drawing without first having to construct a ground plan. It is nevertheless a masterpiece in descriptive geometry, containing a wealth of geometrical discoveries. In this work Lambert proved himself a geometer of great intuitive powers. In the generality of his outlook, as in certain specific aspects, his work resembles that of Monge later on, usually considered the founder of descriptive geometry as a distinct branch of mathematics. Lambert's investigations of possible constructions by the use of a simple ruler, for example, constructing an ellipse from five given points, was similar in spirit to the program of Poncelet and J. Steiner two generations later" (D.S.B.) "A qualitative leap was made by Lambert in his book Freye Perspective ... He tried to construct perspective pictures by using an implicit form of projective geometry, without a given plan and elevation of the scene. In some sense his Freye Perspective contains the most fruitful use of the plane as a model of space; that is, to work on the plane without projections of the spatial objects instead of the objects themselves. This idea was later developed by Gaspard Monge" (Grattan-Guinness: Companion Encyclopedia of the History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences, p.1599). "In his Freye perspektive he not only discussed perspective drawing but also the intriguing problem of what geometric constructions can be made with a straight edge alone and only a fixed compass" (Gray: Ideas of Space, pp.72). Frankfort am Main: Johann Feyerabends, 1599. Amman, Jost. Small quarto. (iv), (148)ff. First and only edition. Brunet calls this compilation of 293 wood engravings "rare et fort curieux." Amman, whose career flourished after his move to Nuremburg in 1561, succeeded Virgil Solis as artist for the printer Carl Sigmund Feyerabends. Originally intended for instructional use, this book, whose images include costumes, potentates, and emblematic devices, is rarely encountered complete. This is only the second complete copy to appear on the market in over twenty years. Bound in full straight-grain blue morocco, with gilt and blind borders. On both panels is an armorial device featuring a winged griffin beneath a pair of crowns. The armorial device belonged to George Spencer-Churchill, 5th Duke of Marlborough and Marquess of Blandford, and great-great-grandfather of Winston Churchill. In order to pay off the debts amassed because of unchecked spending, R.H. Evans sold the contents of Spencer-Churchill's White Knights Library in 1819 and 1820. This volume was sold on June 7th, 1819 for one pound and nineteen shillings. Sometime later, it was owned by Henry Huth--his leather booklabel is on the front paste-down. A member of the Philobiblion and Roxburghe Clubs, Huth assembled a collection rich in diversity. He chose only exemplary copies, as he felt that imperfect books were "the lepers of a library." Carefully washed, leaves show only minor soiling and spotting, and the binding exhibits only the slightest shelfwear. [Click Below for Full Description]

Madrid: En casa de Pedro Madrigal, 1599. [15],186,[21] leaves, lacking portrait facing p.1 and final leaf with printing ornament. Small quarto. Early mottled calf, spine gilt, leather label. Minor wear to hinges and corners. Some soiling and wear on lower corners of last few index pages. Earlier library ink stamps. Very good. One of the most important Spanish works on the Indies and New World military organization in the 16th century. It is a tactical manual by a Spanish veteran of the colonial South American frontier and the brutal wars against rebellious native Americans, as well as a rich source of ethnographic and military detail. "The first manual of guerilla warfare ever published....he advocated for the Americas the creation of commando groups to carry out search-and-destroy missions deep within enemy territory for up to two years at a time" - Parker. This work served as both a guide to aid new arrivals in conquest, as well as a sometimes testy address to King Phillip II detailing Vargas Machuca's many services to the Crown, whom he felt never recognized him adequately for his service. The text is divided into four books, followed by a description of the Indies. The parts cover the following subjects: the qualities needed to lead, the preparation of soldiers and necessary materials, the duty of the soldier, and the settling of the land after conquest. It includes significant chapters on military medicine and natural history, though the real significance lies in the fact that "scattered throughout MILICIA INDIANA are unwitting fragments of indigenous and rural … [Click Below for Full Description]

Valencia, Pedro Patricio Mey, 1599. Title, 12 unn. leaves, 156 pp., 8 unn. leaves. 4to. Contemporary half calf. Valencia, Pedro Patricio Mey, 1599. First edition of this panegyric of Philip II, King of Spain (1527-1598). Philip II inherited one of the largest empires from his father Charles V, which included territories in every continent then known to Europeans. His reign saw a flourishing of cultural excellence in Spain, the beginning of what is called the Golden Age, creating a lasting legacy in literature, music, and the visual arts. Philip's foreign policies were determined by a combination of Catholic fervour and dynastic self-interest, he considered himself by default the chief defender of Catholic Europe. The author Antonio Cervera de la Torre (fl. 16th/17th century) was born in Ciudad Real, his parents were Hidalgos from Pozuelo de Calatrava and Madridejos, he received a degree in canon law from the University of Salamanca and was rector of the Imperial College. He was sacristan mayor and definer of the Order of Calatrava and chaplain of Philip II. This present book is the only work of history he wrote. - Palau 54107.

Robert F. Herrey
London: Christopher Barker, nd. (1599). Full Leather. Near Fine binding. Octavo. There is no title page because these were printed to be put in the Geneva translation of the Bible as a concordance. There are several editions. This was printed by Christopher Barker [Printer to her majesty the Queen], and not one of his deputies. Therefore would have had to be printed by or before 1599 when Barker died. All editions until 1615 have the date 1578 on the second leaf, as this copy does. Rebound in a most handsome period binding; title label says "Hervey's Tables" rather than "Herrey's Tables". Digital photos are available. Near Fine binding.
