Straits of Magellan map from Part 9 bound before title of Part 7, Idaea Vera et Genuina bound before Relatio historica. General titles with elaborate engraved borders, modern tree calf, some heavy browning. First editions in Latin from De Bry?s Great Voyages, praised by Boise Penrose as "the cornerstone of every library of Americana." Part 7 is a translation of Schmidel's account of his journey to Argentina and Paraguay (1567). Part 9 comprises translations of Acosta?s important work on the Indians of Mexico and Peru Historia Natural y Moral De Las Indias (1590), Potgieter?s journal from de Weert?s voyage through the Straits of Magellan (1600), and van Noort?s circumnavigation of the globe (1601). Each account is illustrated with highly detailed, and highly influential copper-plate engravings, devised, with artistic license, from eyewitness accounts: ?[These engravings] were the first serious attempt to illustrate the literature of the New World with any degree of accuracy. It is hard to overstress their importance to the European audience, for they established the iconographic program of the Americas? (Elizabeth H. Boone, 1989). De Bry died in 1598, and the publication of his illustrated series of voyages was continued by his widow and sons, who issued parts seven, eight, and nine. Du Laurens, André
London: Imprinted by Felix Kingston, for Ralph Iacson, dwelling in Paules Church yard at the signe of the Swan, 1599. First edition in English. [16], 194., [2, blank] pp. 8vo. Early seventeenth-century full calf, professionally rebacked in period style, covers blindstamped with blind ruled border and central dyed circular stamp. Later (19th-century) re-casing and endsheets. 8 pp. ms in contemporary hand recording medicinal recipes on front blanks, and 1-1/2 pp. at rear (1/2 of last leaf torn away); early inscription on first title, a few ms. markings throughout; some old stains. Overall, very good. First edition in English. [16], 194., [2, blank] pp. 8vo. Melancholy and Old Age in Elizabethan England. First edition in English of a very early text on ophthalmology by the French physician and anatomist du Laurens (1558-1609), one-time physician to Henri IV and Marie de Medici, and author of one of the most widely disseminated anatomies of his day, HISTORIA ANATOMICA (1600). Even more popular was this earlier treatise on vision, eyesight, depression, and old age. "Intended for a lay audience, the work went through more than twenty editions, and was translated into English, German, Latin, and Italian." (DSB VIII: 54). The book is divided into four Discourses, treating Sight, Melancholy, Rheumatism and Old Age. The popularity of du Laurens' work - particularly his vivid discussions of melancholy and aging (e.g., the Five Ages of Man) - doubtless played a role in shaping Renaissance notions of madness, melancholy and old age, themes forming the backdrop of some of Shakespeare's m … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rocamoro y Torrano (Ginés)
Juan Herrera, Madrid, 1599. 4to. (14), fol. 1-271, (1). Woodcut of the arms of Don Luys Faxardo on the title page. Full vellum, ties, manuscript spine title Illustrated with woodcuts, including several full page plates of the sphere of Ivan Sacrobosco, another illustrating both solar and lunar eclipses, and a large woodcut of the solar system showing the earth in the center and the sun revolving in an orbit between Venus and Mars. This title is somewhat bibliographically confusing in that the preliminaries differ from copy to copy, and the title page is sometimes typeset, sometimes with the shield of Don Luys. Palau (271732) remarks that the author may have spoiled some of the early leaves by not including his frontispiece ("Es debido a que el autor inutilizó las primeras hojas por no haber incluido su retrato."), and by substituting 18 new leaves. This copy lacks p2, the frontispiece, as is frequently the case; but the leaf with the Sonnet of Lope de Vega (obverse) and the Licenciado Camarino (reverse) is present here, though not so in other copies. Joannes de Sacrobosco, a scholar-astonomer at the University of Paris, published his work on the Sphere about 1230, which gives a readable account of the Ptolemaic universe and contains a clear description of the earth as a sphere. Even though Copernicus was formulating his ideas of a heliocentric solar system in the mid 1500's, this concept was apparently not yet considered the norm. This is a very good copy: folio 74 has a closed and neatly mended horizontal tear (no loss) and folio 104 has a repair of a closed marginal tear … [Click Below for Full Description]

LA POPELINIERE, Henri-Lancelot Voisin de
Paris: Pierre Mettoyer pour Jean Houze, 1599. Two parts in one volume with 8 pp. appendix (sometimes called three parts), early owner's occasional marginalia including some notes to the title page, later owner's name on front endpaper of one Lord Riberpre; a very attractive copy in seventeenth-century red morocco, gilt. The idea of "discovery" as fundamental to the history of the world. First edition, rare, one of the first works on historiography in French.La Popeliniere (circa 1541-1605) was one of the most innovative historians of his age. His most interesting work was as a speculative geographer with a particular focus on French colonisation of the "unknown" or "australe" land. He was a foundation writer on the subject of French utopian settlement in the then only vaguely theorised southern hemisphere, and is even thought to have mounted the first genuine attempt to found such a colony, sailing from La Rochelle in May 1589 with three tiny ships. John Dunmore writes that they 'got no further than Cap Blanc in West Africa, where dissensions and dispondency made him abandon the expedition and return to France.' (French Explorers in the Pacific, I, p. 196). His two major works on the subject are Les Trois Mondes (1582) and L'Amiral de France (1584).The present work was published in 1599 and seeks to understand the process and meaning of the writing of history in terms of his belief in "discovery" with, as a secondary thesis, a reimagining of modernity as superior to the classical era (contra much of Renaissance thought) precisely because so much of the known world was being … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE BRY, Theodor
Amsterdam: Jan Huygen van Linschoten, 1599. Map. Uncolored copperplate engraving. Image measures 15.5 x 16.5". This bird's-eye plan depicts the Indian city of Goa, the capital of the 16th-century Portuguese trading empire, in a dynamic style that reflects the city's vibrant commerce. Ships of all sizes and from all parts of the East congregate in the harbor to participate in the lucrative spice trade, as well as bring other goods from the surrounding areas such as porcelain, silk, and velvet. Wonderful attention has been given to the detail of the city's plan, with decorative ciphers conveying the architectural splendor for which it was known. Small trees indicate the palm groves and gardens that surrounded the homes of the rich. Outside the city, rolling hills describe the surrounding landscape. A key surrounded by scrollwork and topped with a coat of arms provides explanatory information in Latin. The map appeared in Jan Huygen van Linschoten's Itineraro. It is in very good condition with some staining around original folds. Narrow margins as issues. Theodor de Bry (1528-1595) was a German engraver and book dealer. He produced illustrations of European and international cities which he both visited and imagined visiting, publishing them with maps and atlases by fellow engravers. After his death, his family compiled the images into two series, the Grand Votages and the Petit Voyages. This map of Goa is a beautiful example of his work.

BOAISTUAU, Pierre.
Breugelmans, Leiden Imprints, p. 16; STCN (2 copies); Typ. Batava 669; cf. Belg. Typ. 7952 (1st ed.); Doukas, Pierre Boaistuau, pp. 167-194; Machiels B-750 (1st ed.). The rare second Dutch edition of Boaistuau's celebrated and immensely popular Le théâtre du monde. Influenced by St Augustine's The City of God, the work analyses the distress and misfortunes of human life, using the theatre as a metaphor. Boaistuau understood the diseases, poverty, hunger and continuous warfare that plagued early 16th-century life as proof of God's wrath. He criticized the corruption and decadence of Man, and advocated a Stoic morality based on reason and Christian virtue. Included, as usual, is a translation of Boaistuau's Bref discours de l'excellence et dignité de l'homme, which was published simultaneously to complement the Théâtre, focussing on Man's virtues and abilities rather than his misery. With early owner's inscription on title-page. First 6 leaves with small restoration at the foot, some occasional minor stains. Bookblock nearly detached, lacking first flyleaf. Reasonable copy.

METEREN, Emanuel van.
First Latin edition, with Frans Hogenberg's original early map of the Low Countries and a very rare additional portrait of Van Meteren by Hendrik Hondius the Elder, dated 1599. Van Meteren's History first appeared in a 1593 German translation by the same publisher, based on an unauthorized Dutch text. The Latin translation of the German was updated with events up to 1598 without Van Meteren's knowledge. Mylius's Cologne editions include Hogenberg's original map, engraved ca. 1587. The first authorized edition, in the original Dutch, appeared in 1599 in Delft, and includes a copy of Hogenberg's map. Van Meteren's work was the first history of the Netherlands to treat the revolt against the Spanish up to the foundation of the Dutch Republic but was banned by the States-General, though the ban was lifted six months later. With the bookplate of Boies Penrose and the names of J. Hoare and Thomas Smith on first fly-leaf and title-page. Bottom of spine damaged; some old annotations in the margins; some stains. Good copy.

Hakluyt, Richard:
London: George Bishop, Ralph Newberie and Robert Barker, 1599-1600.. Three volumes bound in two. [24],620;[16],312,204;[16],868pp. Folio. Eighteenth-century calf, rebacked, original spines neatly laid down. Some slight edgewear. Two older bookplates on each front pastedown. Two unobtrusive early ownership signatures to the titlepage of volume one. Very good. The second edition, greatly expanded from the single- volume original version of Hakluyt's voyages, with the 1599 titlepage, and with the suppressed leaves relating the voyage to Cadiz from the 1720 reprint. Titlepage of volume two reads "Hackluyt" and "1599" with line 7 reading "these 1600.yeres." This second edition is an entirely different book from the initial 1589 compilation, more than doubling it in content. "This [second edition] was indeed Hakluyt's monumental masterpiece...Much that was new and important was included: the travels of Newbery and Fitch, Lancaster's first voyage, the new achievements in the Spanish Main, and particularly Ralegh's tropical adventures...The book must always remain a great work of history, and a great sourcebook of geography, while the accounts themselves constitute a body of narrative literature which is of the highest value in understanding the spirit of the tendencies of the Tudor age" - Penrose. "It is difficult to overrate the importance and value of this extraordinary collection of voyages" - Sabin. "...An invaluable treasure of nautical information which has affixed to Hakluyt's name a brilliancy of reputation which time can never efface or obscure" - Chur … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARIANA, Padre
Thomam Gusmanium, Toledo. [Click Below for Full Description]
