Von Wolzogen, Johann Ludwig.
Only edition, second issue, of volumes eight and nine from the series Bibliotheca fratrum polonorum. Exegetist Johann Ludwig von Wolzogen (ca. 1599-1658) was an Austrian nobleman who became a prominent voice among the Polish Brethren called Unitarians, proponents of Socinianism and the Radical Reformation that denied the Holy Trinity based on rational exegesis of Scripture. Their collected writings, the => first and most important collection of Socinian documents, were clandestinely published ca. 1665-92 in ten volumes with => false imprints to evade censors. Like the rest of the series, these two volumes of Von Wolzogen's exegetical, didactical, and polemical works are imprinted with the date 1656, without a publisher; however it is known they were published in Amsterdam by Frans Kuyper (1629-91) and Daniel Bakkamude (1662-85), perhaps with Hendrick Boom (1657-1709), whose monogrammed printer's device appears on some of the sectional title-pages. Kuyper, a former minister, produced only Socinian works in the decade 1663-73. The first volume contains exegesis of the Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and the second, commentary on the Acts and the epistles of Paul, Jacob, and Jude, with contributions from Wissowatius, Crellius, and Schlichtingius. The text, in Latin, printed in roman and italic, is punctuated with handsome woodcut initials, tailpieces, and woodcut devices on the sectional titles, as above.

Opsopoeus, Johannes, ed.
Paris: No publisher/printer [Compagnie de la Grand' Navire], 1599. 8vo (19.2 cm, 7.6"). [8] ff., 524 pp.; 71, [3] pp. Fame? Misfortune? Wealth? Life? Death? The Sibylline Oracles knew all, but understanding their pronouncements was not always easy. The efforts of scholar Onofrio Panvinio (1529–68), translator Sebastien Castellion (1515–63), and editor Johannes Opsopäus (1556–96) are brought together here and are supplemented by => twelve finely engraved portraits of "the oracles" by Karel van Mallery (1571–ca. 1635).    The pronouncements are here in the original Greek, with Latin translation (including sidenotes) on the facing page. These are enhanced by Panvinio's study of the Oracles, extensive elogia (testimonies by the ancient authors Plato, Ovid, Aristoteles . . . ), and Mallery's engravings of the sibyls, all preceding the actual printing of the prophecies with notes and supplemental material by Opsopäus.    The volume begins with a most handsome emblematic engraved title-page signed by Mallery involving a ship at sea against a sky labeled "Lutetia" (for Paris) surmounting an elaborate architectural frame containing the title and incorporating elegant symbolic ladies and more, followed on the next leaves by a dedication to the esteemed French collector Jacques-Auguste de Thou (Thuanus, 1553–1617). Beautiful floriated woodcut initials, factotum initials, head- and tailpieces decorate the text, which is an => exquisite example of printing, using Claude Garamont's grecs du roi.    It seems that there were related texts printed at the same time that are sometimes found b … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible. English. 1599. Geneva–Tomson–Junius.
London: Impr. by the deputies of Christopher Barker, 1599 [i.e., 1633 or later]. 4to (22 cm, 8.6"). Add. t.-p., [3], 190, 127, 121, [11] ff.; illus. At least five editions appeared with this 1599 imprint, almost none of which were actually printed that year. Darlow and Moule note, "The phenomena of the various editions described under the year 1599 . . . constitute one of the most curious problems in the bibliography of the English Bible." Clearly there was a demand (by English Puritans and by Pilgrims in the Low Countries and America, among others) for Geneva Bibles, with their strongly Protestant marginal notes, well after they could no longer be printed openly in London. Pocock is of the opinion that recognizing this, Robert Barker "adopted" various early-17th-century Amsterdam and Dort Genevas; the back-dating and "back-attributing" on their title-pages would have associated these with and effectively disguised them as a popular and approved Bible printed by his own father, who died in that year and whose press he took over in the year following. STC attributes the whole array of editions purely to Stam in Amsterdam, who as publisher also would have benefitted from the fame and innocuousness in England of Christopher Barker's actual 1599 edition, though he would have had no reason in Dutch law for disguise. The text at hand here is the Geneva version (as usual, without the Apocrypha), with Tomson's revised New Testament and Junius's Revelation — but this copy thoroughly muddies the waters with a title-page supplied from another copy, possibly even the genuine 1599 pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huyghen van
The Hague: Henricszoon & Elsevier, 1599. Title page a bit dusted and stained with early manuscript ownership dated 1600 crossed out; one plate significantly ink stained (native maidens of Goa facing p. 50) and seven other plates water-stained; some old but faithful paper repairs to folds of the Plancius world map; top and bottom margins of the Spice Islands map roughly cropped with some loss of the decorative border, and the birds-eye view of Goa is tender at the folds. Overall a very good copy of a book that saw much practical use, in an attractive later eighteenth-century French binding.. Folio, with 36 plates (all double-page or folding) and seven large maps; attractive mid-eighteenth-century French full speckled calf with raised bands and gilt compartments, original gilt label; manuscript inscription to front endpaper dated 1839 indicating provenance from the library of Paris parliamentarian Monsieur Mathieu. One of the most important books relating to early trade with Asia and the East Indies and a masterpiece of cartographic printing, Linschoten's Itinerario was translated into numerous languages and carried by merchant traders plying eastern seas for over a century. Few books can equal the geopolitical impact of this one, widely credited with initiating aggressive Dutch and English mercantile expansion into East Asia at the expense of the Portuguese. This copy is an attractive example of the first Latin edition of 1599, complete with the full suite of 36 plates and six maps prepared for the earlier Dutch edition of 1596, and an additional map of the North Sea and pol … [Click Below for Full Description]

Foliated woodcut initials and headpieces, engraved architectural title page, with royal arms of Henry IV at head, with his Monogram H at sides, horses at base of columns, six large engravings in text, plus one full page of the complete horse skeleton, early manuscript shelf mark on fly. Light age yellowing, very light marginal spotting, the odd mark or spot. A very good copy, crisp clean on thick paper and with good margins, excellent impressions of the plates, in contemporary vellum over thin paste boards, remains of ties. Extremely rare and important first, and only, edition of this treatise on the anatomy of the horse, beautifully illustrated with seven exceptional engraved plates by J de Weert, some of the finest and most accurate engravings of horse anatomy of the C16th. This work describes the anatomy of the horse in great detail and with great rigor. The engravings are of such detail that it is even possible to make out the joints of the skull, which are abundantly described. Remarkably it was the first work dealing specifically with horse anatomy published in France; the only other to touch on the subject was the translation into French of Vegetius’ work on horses of 1563, which, whilst dealing with the horse in general, barely touched on its anatomy, not even distinguishing between bovine and equine. Heroard wrote the work in 1579 and the manuscript was preserved in the library of Château de Chantil … [Click Below for Full Description]

I H [John Hayward]
London : John Wolfe, 1599 A good copy of this scarce work. The first edition of this work was published in 1599, and incurred the anger of Queen Elizabeth I, who had the work assessed by Francis Bacon to establish treasonous intent. John Hayward was imprisoned and second edition copies were destroyed. It was republished with the original 1599 title page in 1629 and it is likely that this copy dates from 1629 because it was published without frontispiece (which features in the late 1630's edition) and has an inverted 'e' in Teucer on the page following the title page. The half leather binding has marbled boards which look contemporary. The spine and leather corners are very worn but the book is currently sound. Page edges red. Internally: a neat ink handwritten history of the work has been written on the front pastedown (possibly 1700-1800's); free endpaper clean; title page; page entitled 'Illustrissimo & honoratissimo' (dedication to the Earl of Essex) with decorative initial capital; page of 'Faultes escaped in the Printing'; 'AP to the Reader' 4pp with decorative headpiece and initial capital; Text pp 1- 149 with decorative headpiece and tailpiece and initial capital; colophon; blank with small ink note to top - R644; free endpaper. Text is generally in good to very good condition - there is the occasional small mark and very light toning to paper. Size 18.6 x 14.5 cm. A nice copy.
