LEMNIUS, Levinus (i.e. Lievens LEMMENS).
With woodcut printer's device on title. 8 leaves, 582 pp., 28 leaves. Thick small 8vo. Contemp. leather, with a dark-stamped panel with center ornaments, angle fleurons and acorns, spine in 4 compartments with the same fleurons. Engr. heraldic exlibris on front pastedown. Frankfurt am Main, Palthen for heirs of Peter Fischer, 1598. The main work of Lemnius (1505-1568), Dutch physician and philosopher from Ziericksee in Zeeland, was often published and translated in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is, despite its title, mostly a medical and pharmaceutical compendium, offering advice on hygiene concerning all aspects of life, like living arrangements, food preparation, slaughtering, drinking water, wine, etc. Lemnius' views are not entirely free of superstition, but he still deserves to be regarded as the foremost hygienist of his century. He had studied medicine with Vesalius in Louvain, and was a friend of Dodonaeus and Conrad Gesner. - Somewhat browned thoughout, corner torn off p. 147/48 without text loss. - Wellcome 3704; Durling 2776; Rosenthal, Bibl. Magica, 2959; Hirsch III, 666; STC (German) 493; Adams L-420; Simon, Bibl. Bacchica II, 399; VD 16 ZV 16010; not in Caillet, Graesse, Duveen, Ferguson, or Ackermann. PARAMO, Ludovicus de
Juan Flandrum, 1598. FIRST EDITION, fol. pp (cxxxvi) 887 (i). Double column, mostly Roman letter, some Italic, engraved panel on t.p. with allegorical female figures, woodcut initials. Light waterstain at foot in places, t.p. a little dusty, final leaf a bit creased. A good clean copy in contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties; interesting bibliographic notes of Julius Kronek, Milan 1843 on front pastedown. First and only early edition of the first historical work dedicated exclusively to the Inquisition, by Luis de Paramo, Archdeacon and Canon of Leon and Inquisitor of Sicily from 1584 to 1605. This monumental work is divided into three books, themselves subdivided into separate sections, beginning with the way in which God dealt with the sin of Adam, which Paramo describes as the prototype of inquisitorial procedure and judgment and how heretics and idolaters were dealt with in both the Old and New Testament thus justifying the origins of the inquisitorial process. Book 2 deals first with the juridical establishment of the Inquisition, its processes, officers and authority and secondly surveys its development and activities, literally throughout the world, from the East Indies to Ethiopia to Mexico to the Caucasus. It is interesting to note how the Inquisition's primary concerns varied according to local circumstances. The concentration on the conversion, or expulsion of Moors and Jews being a specifically Spanish phenomenon - elsewhere, witchcraft (according to Paramo the Inquisition had condemned some 30,000 witches), child abuse and clerical discipline were more pressin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Whittingham, William; Anthony Gilbey; Thomas Sampson, Laurence Tomson
London: Christopher Barker, Printer to the Queenes Most Excellent Maiestie, 1598. Octavo. . 190, 127, 116, 11 leaves. The New Testament was printed in 1597. Not in Herbert or Darlow and Moule. However, clearly an octavo variant of Herbert 244 normally issued as a quarto often bound with the Apocrypha (which would have been anathema to the Puritans for whom this published octavo edition would have been published). The thousands of notes were translated from the French edition which had been edited by John Calvin. Often those who prepared notes would emphasize justification by faith in the Geneva Bible and make negative remarks at the papacy often buried in the marginal notes. The octavo editions were still expensive though they would have cost less than a week's wages for the lowest-paid workers. Though the small editions often lacked illustrations or maps, this copy has many illustrations including the items of the tabernacle, the temple, and the map of the Holy Land with a list of all the towns noted in the four gospels with coordinates to enable the reader to see the relationship of the major towns. This illustrates how carefully the Puritans read the text and wished to know what it meant when the passages would note the travels of Jesus including the identification of Ior from whence the Iordan [Jordan] River floweth. This also is, of course, a "Breeches Bible" thus, Genesis 3:7 reads that when they saw they were naked, they sewed "figge tree leaves together, and made themselves breeches" [later changed in King James to read "aprons".] The Geneva Bible was the first Engl … [Click Below for Full Description]

1598. Plate 118: Portrait of Christoph Freiherr von Teuffenbach. Christoph, Freiherr von Teuffenbach (died 1598), was a German general. German text on verso not referring to the plate. Etching/engraging on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: This original antique print originates from 'Der Aller durchleuchtigsten und grossmachtigen Kayser Konigen und Ertzhertzogen Fursten, wie auch Grafen, Herren von Adel'. Elaborate full-page full-length portrait plates within ornamental architectural frame, elaborate wood-engraved text borders. Editio princeps (in Latin) published in Innsbruck, 1601. Grandly illustrated Mannerist catalogue of the Heldenrustkammer of Archduke Ferdinand II of Tirol at Schloss Ambras in Innsbruck - the first collection of armor assembled on historical principles, in the first purpose-built museum north of the Alps. The Roman Catholic Archduke Ferdinand II of Tirol (1529 - 1595) was an avid collector of weaponry and armoury, that had originally belonged to all sorts of princes and potentates. He assigned his personal secretary Jacob Schrenck von Notzing to write a catalogue of the collection of armory (Heldenrustkammer) housed at Schloss Ambras near Innsbruck which finally was brought to print in 1601 only. The magnificent catalogue (known as Armamentarium heroicum) shows very rare examples of armours from the 15th and 16th centuries which originally belonged to illustrious persons such as the Emperor Maximilian I or Prince Maurice of Orange. In 1582 the Antwerp born Augsburg engraver Dominicus Custos started to engrave the 126 portraits after the drawings … [Click Below for Full Description]

This map / plate shows Bantam / Banten and the islands off the coast in Indonesia. With legend and ships. Original copper engravings on a vellin type paper. Description: This is an extremely rare print / copperplate engraving from: 'De eerste Schipvaerd der Hollandsche Natie naer Oost-Indien. (The first sea voyage of the Dutch nation to the East-Indies .), which was part of the monumental work by Isaac Commelin (1598-1676) on VOC voyages: 'Begin ende voortgangh van de Vereenighde Nederlantsche Geoctroyeerde Oost-Indische Companie.', published by Joannes Janssonius, Amsterdam, 1646. The First Dutch Expedition to Indonesia was an expedition that took place from 1595 to 1597. It was instrumental in the opening up of the Indonesian spice trade to the merchants that eventually formed the Dutch East India Company, and marked the end of the Portuguese Empire's dominance in the region. Although the expedition did not bring back as much as expected - 245 bags of pepper, 45 tons of nutmeg, and 30 bales of mace - spice prices had become so inflated that the expedition was still profitable. All in all, the voyage suffered from bad leadership, but was still instrumental in opening up the East Indies to the DutchArtists and Engravers: During this voyage Cornelis de Houtman (1565-1599) emerged as the leader of the expedition.
