[LA PERRIÈRE, GUILLAUME DE]
London: Adam Islip, 1598. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, Earliest State (with four leaves of preliminaries). First published in 1555 as "Le Miroir Politique," this is an illustrated discussion of the best forms of government, the six types of citizens (priests, magistrates, nobility, wealthy merchants, artisans, and farmers), and the duties people owe to their society and to each other. The woodcuts are mostly "tree" diagrams summarizing the key points, such as the three kinds of a "good Commonweal," ranging from best (monarchy) to good (oligarchy), and the three "depraved Commonweals," from bad (democracy) to worst of all (tyranny). Other charts show the qualities a government should have, the causes of ruin and sedition, and the duties owed by citizens. The two folding woodcuts display the "Tree of Justice" and the "Tree of Sacrifice." Miniature woodcuts showing a representative priest, magistrate, noble, merchant, artisan, and farmer accompany text explaining the duties and importance of each. According to Pforzheimer, "This compilation of instances and anecdotes on the social customs of different nations and upon the duties of the various members of society to each other, while taken mainly from classical sources, is still of interest to students of the sixteenth century." Considered one of the earliest anti-Machiavelli texts, it gained a new prominence in the late 20th century when it was cited by Michel Foucault in his discussion of the concept of governmentality, or the art of governing. La Perriere (1499-1554) was the author of the earliest vernacular emblem book, the … [Click Below for Full Description]

1598. Der älteste erhaltene Original-Wechsel des Königreichs Kastilien The oldest extant Promissory note of the Kingdom of Castile [Finanzgeschichte] Original-Wechsel der Bank der Erben des Ambrogio Spannocchi in Rom, Salamanca, 29. August [14]84. [Click Below for Full Description]

HOOD, Thomas; MOHR, Georg; BEDWELL, William; STURM, Johannes.
J. Windet and sold by S. Shorter; Jacob van Velsen for the author [1598]; 1672, London; Amsterdam. One of the most remarkable sammelbands from the Macclesfield library, containing the extremely rare first edition of the first published work on the ?sector?, also called the ?geometrical compass? by Galileo who developed it independently in the late 1590s as an instrument for military engineering (although he did not publish an account of it until 1606). ?Hood?s sector was the first mechanical calculating device of general practical use to be published since the abacus of remote antiquity? (Stillman Drake, p. 17). ?Although credit for the sector is often given to Galileo, it is clear that the instrument was well known and used in England before Galileo published his work on it? (Tomash & Williams, p. 1416). ?The sector was one of the most familiar of mathematical instruments between the 17th and 19th centuries. It was however devised just before 1600 and was first published in 1598 by the English mathematical practitioner Thomas Hood. An independent version developed by Galileo Galilei in the 1590s was published early in the 17th century [1606], and many other designs subsequently followed? (mhc.ox.ac.uk). OCLC lists no copies in North America, but we have located one (Folger), though it lacks the plates (present in this copy); ABPC/RBH list three copies (including Horblit and Kenney), all lacking the plates. Also included in this volume are three geometrical works by the Danish mathematician Georg Mohr that are so rare that they were thought to be lost until a copy of one of … [Click Below for Full Description]

The first and second editions, both dated 1597, are known in only a handful of copies each. Only three other copies of Apophthegmes have appeared at auction since 1967. The Essayes, which went into numerous editions in the author's lifetime and eventually expanded from the 10 essays printed here to 58 in the 1625 edition, treat moral and political topics in "a terse, aphoristic style ... which Bacon conceived as a genre setting down discrete observations on life, and aspiring to some kind of objective validity" (ODNB). Teixeira, José
Important manuscript, to-date unpublished, attacking the King of Spain within the context of the so-called Black Legend and arguing for the independence of Portugal, shortly translated into English as "The Anatomie of Spayne"; only one other copy known of this text in Spanish, at Cambridge University Library, often deemed the original, this copy is written in a neat, clear hand but with substantial corrections in the same hand throughout the text, possibly the author's own. Teixeira, a Portuguese exile and sturdy nationalist, claimed for independence of Portugal from the Spanish Crow; he was a follower of crown-claimant Don Antonio (The Determined, or the Independentist", grandson of King Manuel I of Portugal). Manuscript on paper in a fine uniform hand, possibly autograph, with substantial corrections in the same hand throughout the text suggesting that this was a draft version of the text, most likely in the author's own hand. Illustrated title with an ornamental border emblazoned with the arms of Spain on the upper border and those of the six provinces to the left and right and with the words: 'Miedo', 'Sospecha', 'Usurpacion', 'Hipocresia', 'Perfidia', 'Tirania', 'Homocidia', 'Bastardia' written under them, and the date '1798' on the lower border. The manuscript was soon translated into English as "The Anatomie of Spayne, Composed in the Castilian tonge by Don Biud de Haro. An. 1598. Translated into Englishe by Harye Bedwod, gent. 1599", this is also very rare, with manuscript copies at Eton College Library and Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library ( … [Click Below for Full Description]

This is the first issue of the desirable second edition, greatly expanded from the single-volume original version of Hakluyt's voyages, with the first state of the titlepage (dated 1598 rather than 1599, and mentioning Essex's "famous victorie" at Cadiz in 1596), and the genuine original printing of the suppressed leaves containing the voyage to Cadiz (pp.607- 619) corresponding with Church's first issue. This second edition is actually an entirely different book from the initial 1589 compilation. Abraham ORTELIUS
Anversa, 1598. A very nice map of Greece. Very decorative title cartouche centered in the upper part of the map. Three inset maps in upper left-hand corner and lower-right-hand corner, including maps of Europe, Thessaly and Bithynie. From Ortelius’ "Parergon", the first historical atlas. The maps of the Parergon illustrate the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian worlds, as well as the mythical past, and were the result of Ortelius’s own research. In extensive texts on the versos of the maps, Ortelius summarizes the events depicted and describes his sources. "Argonautica" sets forth the voyage of Jason, according to the pseudo-Orpheus account that takes the voyagers north, up the Don, to the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans and back to the Mediterranean through the Pillars of Hercules. As did the ancients, Ortelius accepts the voyage as historical fact. M. Van d … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert J. Oppenheimer
Lacking dust jacket. A small book that will arouse reader interest and focus attention on Oppenheimer in the role in which he is supreme -- the scientist, who lives in a world remote from common mortals. Six chapters of the book constitute the Reith Lectures, given over B.B.C. in November and December 1953. It is a text that almost demands excerpting, while at the same time giving as a whole a unity of poetic expression that carries even the scientific ignoramus along in its sweep and beauty. He aims to show ""with exaggerated simplicity and contrast, the state of knowledge and belief"" essential to understanding new developments. He sketches the physical world between Descartes' birth and Newton's death, and the methods, hopes, traits and program of that period, now deep in our tradition. He then goes on to those who contribute greatly to the cumulative sum of scientific knowledge, basic to atomic and nuclear physics. ""Our progress"" he says, ""is narrow: it takes a vast world unchallenged and for granted"". There are parts of these lectures where one senses the man's philosophy, his humility, his acceptance of a world bond of brotherhood. He rejoices in the privilege accorded the English-speaking world of open access to knowledge -- ""a freedom to resolve difference by converse...to let tolerance compose diversity...a freedom barely compatible with modern political tyranny"". And in closing he sums up what he feels the rewards of scientific research- ""in an earthy way, the power of betterment""...while ""we are anxiously aware that the power to change is not always nece … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giuseppe ROSACCIO Pordenone circa 1530 - Venezia 1621
Map taken from the famous "Viaggio da Venezia a Costantinopoli" by Rosaccio, published in Venice in 1598 by the Giacomo Franco. The map are engraved by Marco Sadeler. Perfect conditions. Rare.

Lederband der Zeit mit Goldprägung auf vord.Deckel (minmalst berieben), insgesamt ein sehr gutes Exemplar. Seltene deutsche Erstausgabe! ? [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Antonio MAGINI (1555 - 1617)
1598. ESEMPLARE IN COLORITURA COEVA. This map derives entirely from a pen-and-ink drawing that Giulio Sorte realized in 1575, a sort of copy of a previous map realized by his father Cristoforo Sorte, nowadays lost. The great map had been commissioned to C. Sorte by the Doge of Venice, it had to depict the whole Venetian dominion. The copy of his son is about the territory of Bergamo and it differs from Magini's in some details. Light water spot on the margins, otherwise in goosd condition." Almagià pagg. 40/42.

Abraham ORTELIUS (1528 - 1598)
"A very nice map of Greece. Very decorative title cartouche centered in the upper part of the map. Three inset maps in upper left-hand corner and lower-right-hand corner, including maps of Europe, Thessaly and Bithynie. From Ortelius' ""Parergon"", the first historical atlas. The maps of the Parergon illustrate the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian worlds, as well as the mythical past, and were the result of Ortelius's own research. As did the ancients, Ortelius accepts the voyage as historical fact." M. Van de … [Click Below for Full Description]
