Extremely rare relation on Houtman's expedition to the East Indies in 1595-97, prepared by a yet un-identified shipmate, and describing the first incursion into the Spice Trade in the region; originally published in Dutch: Verhael vande Reyse de Hollandtsche schepen gedaen near Oost Indien (1597), of which Muller says "Nous ne connaissons qu'un seul exemplaire du Verhael", almost unobtainable. This is possibly the first edition in German -and the earliest obtainable edition-, printed the same year as Reschedt's edition (different in size and collation), although priority has not been established. Cornelis de Houtman (1565 - 1599) was a Dutch sailor, explorer, and merchant, usher to the era of Dutch trading and settling in Indonesia; he was also the younger sibling to Frederik de Houtman. In the early 1590´s, Houtman visited Lisbon, aiming to procure as much information on the Spice Islands as possible; upon his return to Amsterdam he -along with other partners- founded the Compagnie van Verre, forerunner of the Dutch East India Company, with the purpose of stopping the monopoly held by Portugal over the spice trade in the East Indies. Wasting no time, the company funded an expedition led by Cornelis, including three heavily armed ships and almost 250 men, which set sail from Texel on April 1595, arrived in 1596 at the port of Bantam (Java). The voyage itself was not profitable, and humanly disastrous, only 87 men returned, the ulterior gain was much higher, it ushered the Dutch entry into the trade in the East Indies; the Compagnie van Verre, along with others, merged to f … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Imprinted by John Wolfe, 1598. [9],197,[2],198-259 [i.e. 295],[3],307-462pp. Titlepage for the Second Booke bound in place of engraved titlepage, which is lacking. Text only, lacking all plates and maps. Small folio. Modern calf, spine gilt. Binding lightly rubbed at extremities. Top inch of titlepage trimmed; titlepage moderately soiled. A copy text of the first English edition of Linschoten's classic, the most important description of the East Indies in the Age of Discovery, translated from the first Dutch edition of 1596. Linschoten travelled to Goa in 1583 as a clerk to the Portuguese Archbishop of Goa, and remained there for six years. While in India he also served the Archbishop of Goa. Returning to Holland in 1592, he prepared his notes for the Amsterdam publisher, Claeszoon, in response to interest in the Netherlands and other European countries about commercial possibilities in Asia. As trade in the Far East was dependent on routes via America or Africa, his work eventually encompassed the entire globe, including Spanish and Portuguese activities in America. Linschoten's ITINERARIO, VOYAGE, OFTE SCHIPVAERT soon was considered the single most significant source regarding the East and West Indies and numerous editions were published in Dutch, Latin, French, German, and English. Klooster describes the work as … [Click Below for Full Description]

Drake, Francis]: Passe, Crispin van de, the Elder
[Cologne, 1598. Engraved portrait, approximately 4 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches. An excellent, sharp, crisp impression. Fine. In a blue half morocco slipcase. This rare portrait of Drake by Crispin van de Passe comes from an early volume of engraved portraits, EFFIGIES REGUM AC PRINCIPUM, EORUM SCILLICET (Cologne, 1598). Drake, who circumnavigated the globe in 1577-80, appears under the title, "most noble English knight, very experienced in all things nautical and military." "The portrait of Drake is of especial interest: it is a close copy of the smaller Hondius Drake portrait which in its first state exists in only two copies (Royal Geographical Society, and Huntington Library). It depicts him in bust, with a shield, and with a two-hemisphere terrestrial map displaying the track of his circumnavigation" - Kraus. De Passe's stylized monograph appears near the bottom of the portrait. Epigrammatic verses in Latin by Matthias Quad appear beneath the portrait. KRAUS, DRAKE 59. SABIN 58995. GRAESSE V:154. BRUNET IV:414.
