[1598]., [1598].. Fair. - An original holograph document attractively penned in an unknown hand on 13-1/4 inch high by 15-5/8 inch wide cream paper. Fifteen lines boldly penned with several flourishes, signed "Christophorus Popel Barro a Lobcowicz" by Christoph Popel, Baron of Lobkowicz who was Chief Steward of Bohemia under the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. The document is further annotated with 8 lines penned across the center of the verso with an unidentified signature and another 8 lines penned vertically on the verso above the center panel, also with an unidentified signature. The faint remnants and outline of a red wax seal are centered at the top and bottom edges of the verso. Folded twice vertically and four times horizontally, with several tears along the folds. There is some foxing present, especially at the top and bottom. Good. The Chief Steward of Bohemia under Emperor Rudolf II, Christoph Popel, Baron of Lobkowicz (1549-1609), was a close friend of the celebrated court painter Hans von Aachen. Lobkowicz, who was known for his language and diplomatic skills, was tasked with welcoming visitors from within and without the Holy Roman Empire to the Emperor's Court and for negotiating alliances in the war against the Turks. Lobkowicz was responsible for the peace negotiations with the Polish King Sigismund. Jan Saenredam (Zaandam, 1565 - Assendelft, 1607)
1598. Bulino misure: foglio mm 249 x 169; lastra mm 246 x 167 Pittore, incisore e cartogafro olandese. Rifilata all'impronta del rame. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Iscrizione in basso a sinistra: "HGoltzius Inventor / ISanredam sculpor"; nel margine bianco "Casta pudicitie cui dos, et conscia culpe/Nullius mens est, intemerata manet." e a seguire "C. Schoneus". Bibliografia: Hollstein 23.II; New Hollstein 392.II; Bartsch III.235.42.

Giovanni Antonio MAGINI (1555 - 1617)
Dimensioni: 465x350. "Geographic map, taken from ""L'Italia"" edited by Fabio Magini, printed in Bologna between 1620 and 1640. This map derives entirely from a pen-and-ink drawing that Giulio Sorte realized in 1575, a sort of copy of a previous map realized by his father Cristoforo Sorte, nowadays lost. The great map had been commissioned to C. Sorte by the Doge of Venice, it had to depict the whole Venetian dominion. The copy of his son is about the territory of Bergamo and it differs from Magini's in some details. Light water spot on the margins, otherwise in goosd condition." Almagià pagg. 40/42.

Giovanni Antonio MAGINI (1555 - 1617)
"Striking historical map of the Indian Ocean and contiguous regions of the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia, published by Ortelius in his Parergon. The map includes insets of the North Pole and ""Annonis Periplus"" and ""Ulyssis Errores"" which is centered on Greese. The cartographic sources of this map are based on Homer's Odyssee, Isaac Tzetzes, Ovidius and Ausonius. King Hanno from Carthago is supposed to be the first to sail around the continent of Africa to reach the Arabian sea, and incidentally also the first to tame a lion. Ortelius states that the inset of Hyperborei (the Pole) 'for better beautifying or proportioning of this map', and to remind the reader that in spite of the best efforts of modern explorers, a passage to the Far East via the North Pole has not yet been found by the English or the Dutch. Taken from the 1603 latin edition. Copperplate with fine original colouring, good condition."
