PLANCIUS, Petrus.
London, John Wolfe, 1598. Coloured. 390 x 540mm. Small strip at centre fold skilfully restored. The English edition of Plancius's chart of the islands of the East Indies, engraved by Richard Beckit for Linchoten's 'Discours of Voyages into ye Easte & West Indies'. The original was engraved by Johannes à Doeticum, c.1594, to help the Dutch break the Portuguese monopoly on the spice trade in the East Indies. Following the successful Dutc h rebellion against their Spanish over-lords in 1579, the Dutch struck out to take a share in the lucrative trade in spices from the Far East. In 1592 Petrus Plancius, a cartographer and Flemish minister in the Calvanist Reform Church, sponsored a covert mission to obtain confidential Portuguese manuscript charts from Lisbon. The Houtman brothers, Cornelius and Frederick, acquired twenty-five manuscript charts by the Portuguese cartographer, Bartolomeu Lasso, from which Plancius compiled this map. It was first published as a loose sheet in 1595, but it was also bound into some copies of Linschoten's 'Itinerario'. Cartographically the map is a huge improvement on previous printed maps of Southeast Asia with the Sunda Islands, the Moluccas, and much of the mainland coast well-delineated. The large islands of the Philippines, such as Luzon and Mindanao, are well-drawn, and although the cluster of islands between them are crude, they are at least well placed and correctly named. Palawan is confused with the 'Calamianes' a group of small islands to its east. To the southeast a vast New Guinea has been tentatively assigned to the, theoretical, 'sou … [Click Below for Full Description]

MUNSTER, Sebastian.
Basle: Sebastian Petri, 1598, German edition. Coloured woodcut, image size 320 x 360mm. An updated map of Africa, introduced into Munster's 'Cosmography' in 1588 to replace the block cut in 1540. It was copied from the Ortelius map of 1570, but with less detail because of the limitations of woodcut. It predates the concept of California as an island and the discovery of the Great Lakes. The erroneous westward bulge of South America is retained, although Ortelius had already removed it from his map. Two of cartography's other great myths, the islands of Friesland & St Brendan, appears top right. BURDEN: 64.

TROMP, Maarten Harpertsz.
Autograph letter by the legendary Admiral Maarten Harpertz. Tromp (1598-1653), commander of the Dutch fleet, written on his ship De Maecht van Dort (The Maid of Dordrecht) in the English Channel near Mardijck, near Dunkirk (the Spanish had built a fort at Mardijk in 1620, demolished 1655) and addressed to the Dutch Admiralty at "Middelburg or Rotterdam" (it apparently went to Middelburg). The body of the letter contains only 10 lines but contains valuable information about Tromp's naval activities, informing the Admiralty that with the bearer of the letter he is sending them ten English ships and their captains that Tromp had captured, following the instructions sent to him on 9 July. He asks the Admiralty to take them and dispose of them as they see fit. He also asks them to send the bearer back to him immediately, as they need him urgently and the tides cannot wait. In very good condition.

LINSCHOTEN JAN HUYGEN, VAN - PIGAFETTA FILIPPO
by Iohn Wolfe Graven by William Rogers, 1598. Copper engraving, mm 617x416, coloured by old hand. Rare John Wolfe map of Africa, based upon Filiippo Pigafetta's important early map of Africa, from an English edition of Linschoten's Itinerario, published in London. Filippo Pigafetta's map of Africa was based on the explorations of Duarte Lopes, a Portuguese whose voyages to the Congo basin added to the speculation about the source of the Nile. Upon Lopes' return to Europe, he went to Rome to make a report to Pope Sixtus V and met Pigafetta who compiled the information and published Relatione del reame di Congo in 1591. Rather than following the Ptolemaic convention of twin sources in the Mountains of the Moon, Pigafetta depicts the two lakes in series, with the upper lake also being the source of the Congo. The map provides a marvelous, if highly fanciful image of the interior of Africa, with elaborate topographical details and numerous ships and sea monsters off of Africa's coastlines. Wolfe's map is an entirely new plate, with significant changes from Linschoten's map of the prior year. The cartouche, coat of arms and embellishments in the upper right corner are completely changed, with Wolfe placing the key identifying approximately 40 places within the map in the upper part of the map. In the bottom right corner, Wolfe includes an additional coat of arms with the inscription "Iln'est Rose Sans Espine" (There is no rose without a thorn). The very large sea monster at the bottom right corner is also unique to the Wolfe edition. Wolfe's map is much rarer than the Linschoten … [Click Below for Full Description]

RIBADENEYRA PEDRO
In Genova, appresso Gioseffo Pavoni, 1598. Cm. 21, pp. (32) 535 (1).

Original official ordinance by the knighthood, noblemen and cities of the province of Holland representing the States of Holland (signed by the great statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt), giving a detailed picture of the careful balance that had to be struck between individual rights and general good in maintaining the reclaimed Dutch polder lands in the 16th century, in this case concerning water control in the Land van Arkel, a region around the towns of Arkel and Gorinchem and some villages and polder lands to their north and east. The officials had already taken all measures they could independently, improving the existing windmills and building new ones to pump the rising water up into the rivers, but the windmills were unable to perform optimally because willows, orchards and other planted trees on private properties around the windmills were interfering with the wind. The request was granted by the present ordinance. It gave them the authority to forbid further planting within 50 roeden (about 200 metres) of a windmill and to demand the removal of trees already planted within that distance.Although the document itself explicitly refers to the attached seal, no trace of it survives except for the slit cut through the two layers of parchment below the text. The document is in very good condition, with only very minor wear along the folds. An unusually informative ordinance for clearing trees around windmills.

1598. Der älteste erhaltene Original-Wechsel des Königreichs Kastilien The oldest extant Promissory note of the Kingdom of Castile [Finanzgeschichte] Original-Wechsel der Bank der Erben des Ambrogio Spannocchi in Rom, Salamanca, 29. August [14]84. [Click Below for Full Description]

Vertangen, Daniel (The Hague about 1598 ? supposedly Amsterdam 1681/84)
1598. In Arcadian landscape the company of the male and female bacchantes and satyrs as guests of Silenus as the ?tutor of the god (Dionysus/Bacchus, this himself left of Silenus? group as fat boy with cup in the raised left, turned to a bacchante ensnaring him) whom he is said to have encouraged to invent viniculture?, here with the panther as but rarer of his attributes. Still the music (pan pipe & violin) plays, laugh, drink, make merry, and copulate some, while others already sleep, now exhausted, now merrily, or spit out what was too much. Shot, too, already Silenus himself, here as the squat jovial, burlesque and pug-nosed fat old boy as ?the later poets render? him. Supported by two bacchantes, one of which with tambourine as ?as not only preferred attribute of the dance, but also symbol of love and passion? (Florence Gétreau) in the raised left, he seems about leaving the party, no longer minding the grapes presented, while not eating themselves, by putti. Below of elevated ruins situated laterally right as ?special delight the skin hopping? of a bacchante balancing at the same time a wine bowl and surrounded in a dance. Plumbago drawing on vellum. Inscribed in two lines lower right: Daniel Vert / g.inve. 13? × 15? in (333 × 395 mm). Absolutely perfect drawing up to the signature and lined in brown of delightfully splendid easiness of the as draughtsman very rare Vertangen (?The style of the sheet [in the Albertina] ? pour Noël Glamet, de Quinper-corentin,, Rennes, 1598. 1 vol. in-16, (11,5 x 7,5 cm) ; titre, [8] pp. (Épistre et Table), 550 pp. Reliure du XVIIIe siècle en plein veau brun clair, dos à nerfs orné, caissons frappés de croix de Malte, pièce de titre de maroquin rouge, roulette d'encadrement à froid sur les plats, tranches rouges.
