Antique drawing, titled: 'Spiritus Domine super me ' - Antique print shows the Holy Family: Mary and Joseph with the baby Jesus, the Holy Spirit as a dove, and an angel. Pen and ink drawing on laid paper. Description: This drawing after an 1598 engraving by Jan Sadeler (Hollstein 32). Age: c. 1630.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Anonymous' after 'I. Sadeler'. Jan / Johannes Sadeler I (1550-1600): The Sadeler family were the largest, and probably the most successful of the dynasties of Flemish engravers that were dominant in Northern European printmaking in the later 16th and 17th centuries, as both artists and publishers. The Sadelers were descended from "chasers," engravers of armour, from Aalst. Jan or Johannes de Saeyelleer or Sadeleer had three sons, all usually called "Sadeler": Jan I (1550 Brussels - 1600 Brussels or possibly Venice), Aegidius I (c. 1555 Brussels - c. 1609 Frankfurt am Main) and Rafael I (1560/61 Antwerp - 1628 or 1632). Another Sadeler, Marcus or Marco, was a printer and perhaps publisher who was working in Haarlem in c. 1586-87, and is presumed to be a member of the family, though it is not known where he fits in. Jan I was the father of Justus (c. 1572-c. 1620) and Marcus Christoph (active 1614 to after 1650). Aegidius I was the father of Aegidius II (c. 1570-1629 Prague). Rafael I was the father of Rafael II (1584 - 1627 or 1632), Jan II (c. 1588 - 1665 or later) and Filips (c. 1600, active to 1650). Aegidius II was the father of Tobias, who was active from 1670-75 in Vienna. Condition: Excellent, given age. Print attached to carrier sheet. Some m … [Click Below for Full Description]

HIPPOLYTUS A COLLIBUS.
V1r). Cinque opere in tre volumi riuniti in un tomo in-8°; 4 cc., 384 pp., 16 cc. - 150 pp., 1 c.b. - 60 cc. (compresa l'ultima bianca). [Click Below for Full Description]

HUARTE, Juan;

FROIS, Luis
Ioannis Albini, Mainz, 1598. RARE FIRST EDITION FIRST EDITION. 8vo. pp. 93 (i.e. 95) (i). Roman letter. Small woodcut printer’s device on title, woodcut initials, head and tail-pieces, light general browning (poor quality paper). A good copy in modern calf antique. Rare first edition of these two important and detailed letters by Frois, the first concerning the state of the Christian leaders and Jesuit missions in Japan in 1595 and the second dealing with the death of Hidetsugu the nephew and retainer of Hideyoshi (referred to in this letter by his common name Taicosama). The Portuguese Jesuit Frois was one of the leading members of the Jesuit mission in Japan and his reports are highly esteemed for their attention to detail and concrete data. By the 1590s the predominately Jesuit Christian mission in Japan had made considerable progress, with nearly three hundred thousand converts. Frois worked for some years under the Provincial of India in charge of reporting on East Asia to the church in Europe, and in 1563, at the age 31, he arrived in Japan, at Nagasaki. In 1565 he journeyed to Kyoto, but with the downfall of his protector, Ashikaga Yoshiteru, he was forced to take refuge in Sakai. In 1569 he met Nobunaga, (the first of the great Japanese Generals who nearly unified Japan under his leadership) and received permission to proselytize. He spent the ensuing years in missionary work while writing The History of Portuguese Territories in East India. In his capacity as interpreter he travelled widely in Japan, was party to much inside information on affairs of State and witn … [Click Below for Full Description]
