ARETINO Pietro
[1597]. Woodcut initials and diagram, typographic ornaments. Italic type. 8vo (160 x 100mm). [6]ff, 228pp; [5]ff (first leaf blank), 401, [5]pp., (blank); 142pp, [1]f (blank). Eighteenth-century calf, simple blind fillet on cover, spine gilt with five raised bands, title lettered in second compartment, red edges (joints cracked, headcap chipped and extremities worn). Bengodi, Barbagrigia, 1584 [London, John Windet for John Wolfe], Rare second edition of Pietro Aretino?s famously licentious Ragionamenti to have been published by Wolfe, after his first in 1584 (Woodfield). With Wolfe?s typical misdirection, the printing location ?Bengodi? is the name of a land of plenty borrowed from the Decameron, and Wolfe?s pseudonym, ?Melagrano?, or pomegranate, means ?folly? Written 1534-36, the Ragionamenti consists of two dialogues between prostitutes, each part organised into three days, in which the protagonist instructs her daughter in the ways of the courtesan and recommends it as a career preferable to other alternatives for women (marriage, and the convent). The final work here is Annibale Caro?s lascivious poem on the subject of figs. Sparse annotation in brown ink. Hinges weak. An attractive copy. CNCE 2484. BMSTC (Italian), 518. Brunet I, 411. Parenti, 35. Woodfield, 46, 47. OCLC: (With this pagination and/or ref.: US: Huntington, UCLA, Harry Ransom, Notre Dame.) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

He is best known for his early maps of the New World and Europe, for re-establishing the reputation of the work of Gerard Mercator, and for his portraits of Francis Drake. He helped establish Amsterdam as the center of cartography in Europe in the 17th century. He was born in Wakken and grew up in Ghent. In his early years he established himself as an engraver, instrument maker and globe maker. In 1584 he moved to London to escape religious difficulties in Flanders. While in England, Hondius was instrumental in publicizing the work of Francis Drake, who had made a circumnavigation of the world in the late 1570s. In particular, in 1589 Hondius produced a now famous map of the bay of New Albion, where Drake briefly established a settlement on the west coast of North America. Hondius' map was based on journal and eyewitness accounts of the trip and has long fueled speculation about the precise location of Drake's landing, which has not yet been firmly established by historians. Hondius is also thought to be the artist of several well-known portraits of Drake that are now in the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 1593 he moved to Amsterdam, where he remained until the end of his life. In co-operation with the Amsterdam publisher Cornelis Claesz. in 160 … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAST, Pieter
Amsterdam,: Claes Jansz. Visscher. Description Engraved map on four sheets, joined. NotesThe final state of one of the most famous and influential maps of Amsterdam, first published in 1597. Pieter Bast (c.1550-1605) produced the first town plan of Amsterdam for half a century, updating Cornelis Anthoniszs woodcut view of 1544. He may also have drawn on Braun and Hogenbergs view of Amsterdam from Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1572) (see item 11). It became the standard for the critical period to 1625, the year of Balthasar Florisz van Berkenrodes celebrated ground plan. During these three decades prior to 1625 Amsterdam evolved from a provincial emporium to a world capital ... Bast recorded the appearance of Amsterdam at a singularly momentous point in its history ... Basts print is no mere representation; it is a portrait (Keyes). As the primacy of Antwerp in the Low Countries slipped away at the end of the sixteenth century, Amsterdam moved to take its place. The city took in religious refugees and economic migrants alongside a growing native population, absorbing their skills and wealth. When Bast first made the map, the total area of the city remained the same as it had been a century before, while the population had quadrupled over the same period. The map shows the extensive building required by the expanding population: Anthoniszs 1544 plan had 52 bridges, but Basts has twice that number. It also shows the source of the wealth driving Amsterdams expansion, through the fleet of ships bobbing in the harbour. At the lower left, the shipyard has been brought within the city w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Isocrates, (436-338 BCE), ancient Athenian orator, rhetorician, and teacher whose writings are an important historical source on the intellectual and political life of Athens of his day. The school he founded differed markedly in its aims from the Academy of Plato. “Isocrates’ concern with the moral basis for power also appears in the three other so-called Cyprian orations, which should be read in conjunction with the Evagoras. In the To Demonicus, assuming that it is genuine, Isocrates advises his addressee through a series of traditional maxims, familiar from Hesiod, Solon, and Theognis, somewhat loosely strung together … [Click Below for Full Description]

VAN WYTFLIET, Cornelis
Louvain: Cornelis van Wytfliet, 1597. Map. Copper-plate engraving. Image measures 11.25" x 9.25". This important 1597 map is from the first atlas of the New World by Cornelis van Wytfliet. The atlas contains some of the first printed maps of the New World as well as a history of the voyages of Columbus, Pizarro, Verrazano and other explorers. This map depicts the East Coast of the North America from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to the Canada. The map is only the second map to use 'Virginia' as part of its title and was the most accurate map of the region until Joannes de Laet published his 1630 map 'Nova Anglia, Novvm Belgivm Et Virginia'. At the time, the name 'Virginia' referred to the entire Mid-Atlantic region. The map shows the early knowledge of the region (or lack thereof) just prior to the English voyages of discovery and settlement. Long Island and Cape Cod, two of the most prominent geographical features of the region are missing from the map, so is Hudson River. Because of the notoriously perilous waters around New England and Cape Cod and the Carolina Outer Banks, the regions between Nova Scotia and Virginia were usually avoided and hence poorly mapped. Other anomalies follow some inaccuracies from earlier maps, resulting in the entire coastline pushed northward by about 5 degrees. Chesapeake Bay appears too far north of its actual position, near present day southern Maine. What could be Cape Hatteras appears here as C. de las arenas also placed further north. The most fascinating highlight of the map is the name Norumbega which appears on the map. Thi … [Click Below for Full Description]

WYTFLIET, Cornelius Van
Joannes Bogardus, 1597]. Map of the East Coast, from "the first atlas of America" Double-page engraved map (231 by 295 mm to the neatline, full margins showing the plate mark). The first edition of Wytfliet's map depicting the northeastern coast of North America from Virginia to Cape Breton in New France. "This was the most accurate map of the east coast until de Laet (1630), and only the second to use Virginia in the title. NORVMBEGA, used at first to delineate a large area and a mythical city, later came to be seen to represent the area of Penobscot River in present day Maine" (Burden 103). Despite it's relative accuracy when compared with earlier maps of the region, Wytfliet follows his predecessors De Jode and Gastaldi in placing the Chesapeake Bay too far to the north, at the latitude of Southern Maine. Wytfliet's 'Descriptionis Ptolemaicae Augmentum' was, as the title suggests, marketed as a supplement to Ptolemy's 'Geographia.' Its text was based on the writings of Ramusio, Hakluyt, de Bry, Acosta and others. The work was evidently popular as two further Latin editions appeared in 1598 and 1603. Provenance: The John W. Galiardo collection. Burden 103 [Attributes: First Edition]

Domenico VITUS
Acquaforte, 1597, firmata in lastra in basso. [Click Below for Full Description]

Arrivabene, Lodovico
Verona Girolamo Discepolo, 1597. First edition. Small 4to (21 x 15 cm), pp.[xxiv], 576 (mis-numbered '526'), [20, index], [2, blank]. A very good copy bound in 19th-century polished calf by Bedford, neatly rebacked. A few marks to calf. All edges gilt. Text washed. A chivalric romance set in China, which is depicted as the most virtuous nation known to mankind. Enzolom, a governor of ancient China, is portrayed as an exemplar of the excellent prince and the perfect captain. The eldest of his sons, the great Vitei, is the most valiant and wisest of all knights and kings. It is in the strange ambience of China that these exemplary men live and perform their great deeds. It is. the first in a long line of didactic works in prose in which China is celebrated as a model state. In short, the China that was revered in the Enlightenment is anticipated in this work of the late sixteenth century' (Lach II.ii pp. 220–23). Often seen as a purely literary fiction, this romance was grounded in substantial research by the author. Arrivabene drew from Mendoza's popular history of China, other contemporary European sources, Jesuit reports, and Ramusio's collection of travels for his literary depiction of China. Lodovico Arrivabene (circa 1530-1597) was the leading literary figure of the Gonzaga court at Mantua from 1589, well-known for his cosmopolitan interests. Cordier BS 17; Lach II, 2, pp.219-222; Lach & Foss, p.18; Löwendahl 35. COPAC records copies at the British Library, Manchester, and Oxford (two copies) only. [Attributes: First Edition]

WYTWYLER Ulrich, Abbot of Einsiedeln
Woodcut of Virgin and child on verso of title. 12mo (130 x 80mm.) [24], 203, [1]p. Contemporary vellum ,titled in ink on spine, paper label at foot (lightly soiled, ties missing). The great Benedictine abbey of Einsiedeln abbey dedicated to Our Lady of the Hermits (a reference to St Meinrad the earliest inhabitant) is in Switzerland. Its abbot at the end of the sixteenth century, to whom this book is dedicated, was Ulrich Wyttwyler (1535-1600), who became abbot in 1585 after the disastrous fire of 1577 (which destroyed the library) necessitated the rebuilding of the abbey for which he largely paid. He was the author of a life of St. Meinrad (Friburg, 1587), and it is he who was responsible for the beautiful Benefactors' Book which starts in 1588. In the dedication to thhis book of Marian devotion, the editor Jodocus Lorich (1540-1612) speaks of the text being discovered there 'unknown and amongst other more obscure books' (elsewhere he calls it 'thesaurus insperato inventus'). He also states that there was a German version of the text made by Abbot Ulrich intended for publication along with a corrected text of the Latin aimed at those who 'prefer latin, or can read it more correctly than German'. This must be a reference to a book from the same press in the same year 1597, Peregrinatio:das ist: Bilgerfahrt der hochseligsten Jungfrawen und Mutter Gottes Mariae: ein uralts Büchlin von derselben und irs geliebten Sons auss dem latein durch Ulrichen Abbte. trewlich verteutschet, also edited by Lorichius. Both seem to have been used in nunneries and the survival rate of copies i … [Click Below for Full Description]
