FREDERIC II (of Hohenstaufen) & ALBERT LE GRAND. - [THE GREATEST WORK ON FALCONRY]
- Augsburg, Ioannes Praetorius, 1596. 8vo. Bound in a beautiful red full morocco binding with five raised bands to richly gilt spine. Gilt ornamental borders to boards and centrepieces consisting in a gilt crown. All edges of boards gilt and with blind edge-decorations. Corners, hinges, and capitals neatly restored. A small stamp to title-page. Title-page browned and spotted and a - mostly vague - dampstain up until p. 36. A small repaired loss to outer blank margin of one leaf of index, far from affecting print. Otherwise internally very nice, clean and bright. (16), 414 pp. + 1 leaf with printer's device. With the large double-page woodcut illustration depicting the emperor on his throne with the two kneeling falconeers presenting their falcons to the emperor. Scarce first edition of this seminal classic on hawking and falconry, considered the best and most comprehensive treatise on the subject as well as the first real ornithology text, which has survived to the present day. The work is hailed as "the first zoological treatise written in the critical spirit of modern science" (Review of Casey Wood's new edition of the work, Stanford University Press) and arguably constitutes the greatest ornithological work of the Renaissance, paving the way for modern zoological science. Falconry was probably brought to Europe with the fall of the Roman Empire, when the Huns and Alans arrived from their eastern homelands. Though practiced in antiquity and favored in China and the Near East, falconry reached its zenith under the medieval Arabs, who probably introduced it in Sicily. VAN DAM, AMERSFOORT
17th century. Oil on vellum, framed in gilt frame. Good condition, frame slighly damaged. (31x24cm). On the back in ink some notes on the genealogy of the Van Dam family. Willem van Dam (Amersfoort 1596 - Leiden 1673) was a mennonite who fled in 1618 with his brother Peter to Holstein where he founded Friedrichstadt on the Eider. He was the son of Peter van Dam and Digna van Leemputte. Peter van Dam was a son of Pieter van Dam and Marie Verborch (also written as Verburgh). Digna van Leemputte was a daughter of Jan Jacobsz. van Leemputte and Catharina de Berges ten Essendelle (famous as Trijn van Leemput in Utrecht for demolishing the castle Vredenburgh in 1577). In 1626 after the death of stadhouder Maurits the political situation changed and the Van Dam brothers returned. In 1629 Willem became mayor of Amersfoort. When this city was besieged by Ernesto and his cousin Raimondo Montecuccoli on the 13th of August 1629 Van Dam decided to surrender the city a day later. Van Dam was prosecuted and banished for life for this betrayal. The Staten of Utrecht changed that verdict in 1631. In 1635 he became mayor of Amersfoort again and would serve 11 times more in this capacity. In 1648 he became member of the Staten-Generaal of the Netherlands. In the disastrous year 1672 he fled with his second wife Johanna, daughter of Rombout Hogerbeets, to Leiden, where he would die a year later. His son Pieter van Dam became lawyer (Advocaat ) for the VOC and secretary to the Heren XVII. Descendants of Van Dam married with Van Zegwaart, Graafland, Pit, Wttewael van Stoetwegen. H152

- … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boissard, Jean Jacques.
Frankfurt am Main, Theodor de Bry, 1596. 4to. 5 ff., 356 (but: 353), (5) pp. Engraved title page and 47 full-page portrait engravings in partial colour by Jean Jacques Boissard (all in the pagination); numerous woodcut vignettes and initials. 19th century vellum, bound to contemporary style, with ms. spine title. First edition of this work, the high artistic quality of which is due to the participation of Georg (Joris) Hoefnagel. "This beautiful book contains portraits of the Sultans from Osman I to Murad III and also contains portraits of Scanderbeg and his family, Tammas Khuli Khan, Barbarossa, Roxelana the wife of Suleiman the Magnificent, and pashas of the Ottoman Empire (Cario etc.) [.] The portraits were engraved by Theodore de Bry after drawings by Hoefnagel who apparently took them from medals brought from Constantinople. The portraits are circular within elaborate borders composed of fruits, animals and grotesques within a strapwork frame" (Blackmer). VAN DAM, AMERSFOORT
- 17th century. H152

MONARDES Nicholas; FRAMPTON John
1596 - Third English edition. Wood cuts in the text.Small 4to. The Macclesfield copy. Eighteenth century mottled calf, label renewed, the first 4 and the last leaf, being shorter, possibly supplied from another copy but evidently at the time of binding.[3], 187 ll. London, E. Allde, Frampton, an En glish merchant, was imprisoned by the Inquisition for many years. This is the first of several translations he made from Spanish texts relating to the New World. It was his most successful effort, undertaken to offset the idle hours of confinement, and was printed in three editions. His readership in Britain was clearly more interested in the pharmacology offered by the newly discovered continent than the more politically and expansionists texts he later offered. Nicolas Monardes never set foot in the Americas he lived in Seville and came from and married into notable medical dynasties. A great proponent of tobacco as a panacea, he thought, amongst other ailments ,the magic herb could cure cancer. His book was an international best seller. STC, 18007; Church 253.
