HELIODORUS
1596 GREEK Heliodorus ETHIOPIA History Mythology Egypt Persia Aethiopica Latin “Here ends the history of the Ethiopian adventures.” – Heliodorus Jerome Commelinus’ 16th-century version of ‘Aethiopica’ is the most important and famous edition of Heliodorus’s only known work. This work tells the story and history of the development of Ethiopia through the lens of an ancient Greek romance novel. It is also believed that that Torquato Tasso took significant liberties from ‘Aethiopica’ and used them in his famous book ‘Jerusalem Delivered.’ This 1596 edition used the Latin translation of Stanislaw Warszewicki, a translation that would be used for subsequent editions in other languages. This Latin edition is printed alongside the original Greek in parallel. Item number: #3057 Price: $950 HELIODORUS Heliodori Aethiopicorum libri X. Collatione MSS. Gonzalez de Mendoza, Juan
The first major survey of China, and an early Americana; as referred to Sabin, this is the "FIRST EUROPEAN BOOK IN WHICH CHINESE CHARACTERS OCCUR" (Sabin); "the most comprehensive and popular book on Ming China to appear in Europe" (Lach), it was translated into Italian, French, Latin, German, and English, by order of Hakluyt by Robert Parke. It was a true 16thcentury best seller, first published in 1585 in Rome, this is the first Antwerp edition -and early overall. Pages 295-380 contain Martín Ignacio de Loyola's description of his westward journey around the world in 1582-84, during which he passed through Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, and Mexico on his way to China, returning to Europe around the Cape of Good Hope. According to Sabin -for the first edition-, it provides "curious details concerning the Canaries, St. Domingo, Jamaica, Cuba, Porto Rico, and especially Mexico. Ortelius, in his Atlas, declared that he had received more information concerning America from this Itinerary than from any other single book". "... It is probably no exaggeration to say that Mendoza's book had been read by the majority of well-educated Europeans at the beginning of the seventeenth-century. Its influence was naturally enormous" (Boxer, xvii). "This was the product of three missions. The notes of Martin de Rada, or de Herrada, in the first expedition (along with Pedro de Sarmiento) in 1575, and those of Gonzalez de Mendoza on his mission of 1578, enabled the latter to write the Historia. A third journey in 1581, by Martin Ignacio de Loyola, furnished the Itinerario, which in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Two volumes in one book. By Joannes Lenclavius *** Very rare edition of Ancient Greek Law, printed at the end of 16th century. Ancient Greek law consists of the laws and legal institutions of Ancient Greece. While its older forms can be studied by the laws of Gortyn, its influence can be traced in legal documents preserved in Egyptian papyri and it may be recognized as a consistent whole in its ultimate relations to Roman law in the eastern provinces of the Roman empire, with scholars in the discipline of comparative law comparing Greek law with both Roman law and the primitive institutions of the Germanic nations. Heritage of Ancient Law played important role in development of European constitution. This major work printed in two volumes is perfect example. No copy found for sale in all major auction houses. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 1596 Political Philosophy & Economics Justus Lipsius De Constantia Neostoicism Justus Lipsius (1547 - 1606) was a Flemish philologist and humanist. Lipsius wrote a series of works designed to revive ancient Stoicism in a form that would be compatible with Christianity. The most famous of these is De Constantia (On Constancy). His form of Stoicism influenced a number of contemporary thinkers, creating the intellectual movement of Neostoicism. He taught at the universities in Jena, Leiden and Leuven. De Constantia in publicis malis (On constancy in times of public evil) was a philosophical dialogue published by Justus Lipsius in two books in 1583. The book, modelled after the dialogues of Seneca, was pivotal in establishing an accommodation of Stoicism and Christianity which became known as Neostoicism. 12 September 1596 to 24 December 1600. Lima and Castrovirreyna, Peru. Folio (316 x 215 mm). ff. [i, title], 74. Damage to lower right corner of title page and first ten leaves with some loss of text; dampstaining and pinhole worming throughout.- A unique manuscript -no other copies are recorded- which sheds light on the earliest and still little-understood organization of forced Amerindian labour, the mita, at the Peruvian silver mines established by the Spanish colonisers in the wake of the Spanish conquest of Peru. The manuscript contains details of an audit and documents relating to subsequent accusations of corruption relating to the audit of the Caja de los Granos for the silver mines at Castrovirreyna in Peru. The audit, carried out by Don Juan de Sandoval y Guzmán on the instructions of the Viceroy of Peru, Luis de Velasco, first Marquis of Salinas (c. 1534-1617), covered the years in which Juan Fernández de Castro was the contador of this fund, from 1591 and 1600 - thus from the earliest years of the creation of this Caja de Granos (one of two, the other was created for the silver mines at Potosí), the date of the discovery in 1590 of silver mines in this area and the establishment of the town of Castrovirreyna also in 1590 to cater for the mines. The purpose of the Caja de Granos was to pay for the administrators who ensured the welfare of the Amerindian workers forced to work in the silver mines through the mita system. When these workers, or mitayos as they were called, had their wage rates fixed in the 1570s, it was declared that 1 grano (about 5 maraved … [Click Below for Full Description]

El Testamento Nuevo (1596 New Testament In Spanish)
En casa de Ricardo del Campo (Richard Field, 1596. An ORIGINAL LATE 16th Century New Testament in Spanish - This is presumed to be the version of Cassiodorus Reyna (Casiodoro de Reina) , revised by Cipriano de Valera (Darlow and Moule). Slightly AT FAULT, lacks LAST LEAF ONLY. This copy ends on page 740, and this book is given (Lowndes & D & M again) as having 742 pp. The Printer "Ricardo del Campo" was actually Richard Field of London. Field's Protestantism led him to publish a number of Spanish-language Protestant works for sale in Catholic Spain, under the name "Ricardo del Campo" including this one. Blind stamped full leather, string bound, quite worn with loss to the leather. Splitting to the edges of the spine, but though the front cover is detached, the rear cover is holding firm by the string. 4 raised bands to the (worn/rubbed) spine, with gilt decoration to the compartments and the Title 'Testamen Nvevo' in gilt to the second compartment. Loss to the top of the spine leather. Possibly contemporary, but also possibly bound a little later than issue (? ) as the book is close-trimmed in parts, but losing ONLY a little, here and there, of a former owner's tiny hand-written notes near the edge of the margin. The text and printed margin notes are all intact. A browny stain to the front pastedown in a triangular shape to the bottom half of the endpapers and extends through the book, but petering out gradually at around page 25. The stain can be easily seen on the front pastedown and front free endpaper, but is quite light after that - overall pretty negligible. For his t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jan Huygen van LINSCHOTEN (Haarlem, ca. 1563 - Enkhuizen 1611)
Bibliografia: Schilder, Gunter, Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica, vol VII; Tooley, Guide to Maps of Africa, p. 67. St Helena was an important early re-supply point for the Portuguese from the late 1400s, particularly on their return voyages from Asia. This map appeared in Linschoten's book. The map shows a detailed view of the island: the town, landing places, etc. Ships at anchor in the harbor fly the Portuguese standard. Three elaborate cartouches dominate the upper part of the map, one being the arms of Portugal. A large compass rose is on the bottom left of the map. The engraver for this map was Baptista van Doetechum. References: Schilder, Gunter, Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica, vol VII; Tooley, Guide to Maps of Africa, p. 67. SAVILE, Henry
The 'Gesta Regum Anglorum' is one of the earliest chronicles of the history of the kings of England, first written in the 12th-century by William of Malmesbury. This important work describes the life and reign of early English royals including Henry I and William II. In addition to kings, this collection of biographical sketches describes important English bishops. Malmesbury's 'Chronicle' was supplemented by English historian Henry of Huntingdon, a fellow 12th-century historian. In 1596, Henry Savile continued this work, supplementing the royals that had been neglected after the 12th-century. During that time, there was a movement in Europe where the public demanded chronicles of royalty. Savile simply followed through on demand. (Bates). This edition is complete with all four parts in tact each with their own separate title page. This book was also known to be in the Thomas Jefferson personal library. (Gilreath, Wilson). SAVILE, Henry
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. HELIODORUS
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Here ends the history of the Ethiopian adventures." - Heliodorus Jerome Commelinus' 16th-century version of 'Aethiopica' is the most important and famous edition of Heliodorus's only known work. This work tells the story and history of the development of Ethiopia through the lens of an ancient Greek romance novel. It is also believed that that Torquato Tasso took significant liberties from 'Aethiopica' and used them in his famous book 'Jerusalem Delivered.' This 1596 edition used the Latin translation of Stanislaw Warszewicki, a translation that would be used for subsequent editions in other languages. This Latin edition is printed alongside the original Greek in parallel. [Attributes: First Edition]

GUEVARA, Antonio de
1596 Marcus AURELIUS Letters Stoic Philosophy Meditations Rome Italian Guevara “Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.” ― Marcus Aurelius Antonio Guevara, a 15th-century man of letters, grew up in the court of Ferdinand and Isabella in Spain. His major works include ‘Familiar Letters’, and ‘The Ten Caesars.’ His work, now, is considered of little more than historical interest, but his writing style and contents reflect the tastes of the court of Charles V, who he was writing for later in his life. The subject matter is considered rather trite, but it depicts Spanish life during the early 16th-century. ‘Vita di Marco Aurelio’ features a lengthy biography of Marcus Aurelius and includes published letters of Emperor Aurelius. This treatise is work on Spanish morality through the lens of the life of the famed Roman Emperor. From about 1530 to the end of the century a notable increase of Interest in Marcus Aurelius can be seen in Western Art. Guevara wrote this book hoping to capture some of the profits that could be gained from promoting Marcus Aurelius. BODIN, IO. (JEAN). - [THE FINAL EXPRESSION OF BODIN'S PHILOSOPHY]
Lyon, Jacob Roussin, 1596. 8vo. Contemporary limp vellum. Title-page printed in red and black. A fine copy. (16), 633 pp. ¶ The rare first edition of Bodin's great final work, his main contribution to the field of natural philosophy, "The Theatre of Nature", which was written in 1590, but published for the first time in the year of his death, 1596. In spite of the fact that the "Theatrum" has been somewhat neglected by modern scholars and has for instance never translated into English in 1997, it is in fact one of his most important works. It constitutes the most systematic exposition of Bodin's vision of the world and is the culmination point of his systematic examination of things, revealing to us the full extent of his entire philosophy. In this Bodin's magnum opus of natural history, a completely new type of natural philosophy is constructed, one which attempts to combine religion with philosophy. By combining philosophical research concerning causes with a pious recognition of divine providence and the greatness of God, Bodin constantly reminds us of the importance of reason and reasoning at the same time that he refers to the Holy Scripture. Jean Bodin (1529/30 - 1596), "one of the towering figures in the history of French thought" (Scott), was a lawyer, economist, natural philosopher, historian, and one of the major political theorists of the sixteenth century. His main work, the "Six livres de la république" is one of the most important works of modern political thought. Here Bodin gave the first systematic statement of sovereignty and coined the term "political scie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Venezia (Venice): Appresso Roberto Meietti, 1596. Vellum. Fine. Book. [7] + 598 pp., with several errors in pagination (including 433-454 omitted, and 563-592 repeated, in numbering). This is the work of well-known Padovan Humanist from the Renaissance. He reflects on love, women, pregnancy, family care, discord, language, rhetoric, history, fortune, Virgil, etc. Perhaps Speroni is remembered most for his championing the use of vernacular language in scholarship, and thus this important work and edition is rendered in Italian. Interior has some occasional soilage, but remarkably clean nonetheless, and binding is tight. last dedication page has small tear cutout in lower corner, not coming close to affecting text. Vellum is probably eighteenth century. It has soilage but remains quite healthy and attractive nonetheless. Spine has seven raised bands and green black label in one panel with "Speroni Dialoghi" still bright. Shelfwear is relatively light for vintage of binding. One two inch long by 1/2 inch at most area where vellum rubbed raw on back board. Was in collection of Harvard College Library. Only evidence of ex-lib is neat Harvard bookplate, two small/discreet stamps on blank back of title page (one showing 1921 date, other of deaccession, both stamps 1 inch or less in widest span) and a tiny imprint on first dedication page.
