Commines, Philip de [Translated by Thomas Danett]
London: Ar. Hatfield for I. Norton, 1596. First Edition. Leather_bound. Near Very Good. [8]396 pages. Bound in polished brown leather with five raised bands and spine title in gilt. Quarto. Corners bumped, some edgewear, spine bright. Some minor wormholes to lower margin to about 220 pages, not affecting text. Text bright with uniform light toning. Professional repair to lower corner of title page. Name and date [1965] on front endpaper. Philippe de Commines [1447-1511] was brought up in the Burgundian Court under Charles the Bold, serving him as a diplomat and soldier, then as a diplomat to Louis XI. His memoirs are a major source for the 15th Century and Commines has been called "the first critical and philosophical historian since classical times" (Oxford Companion to English Literature). Neither a chronicler nor a historian in the usual sense of the word, his analyses of the contemporary political scene are what made him virtually unique in his own time. [Wikepedia].

LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huygen van.
Amsterdam, c.1596. Coloured. 390 x 540mm. Repairs to binding folds. A highly decorative map, engraved by Henricus van Langren for Linschoten's Itinerario, a manual for sailing to the East Indies, based on Linschoten's own experiences. It displays all the features that made this period the golden age of decorative cartography: the titles, in Latin and Dutch, are within a strapwork cartouche, also including the scales; across the Indian Ocean is a large, finely-engraved compass rose, surmounted by a fruit garland; sea-monsters and galleons fill the seas, while a lion, elephant and camel appear in Arabia, and just south of Delhi are a pair of unicorns. The map shows Cyprus top left, Bokhara and Samarkand top right, Sumatra bottom right and Ethiopia bottom left, with Delhi, Bahrain and Kabul named. All are synonymous with the famed riches of the East, the inspiration for the Itinerario. TIBBETS: 46.

1596. Almost perfect. A few fingerprints, but crisp and seldom opened. This is a particularly fine reference work on Japanese Swords of the Shinto and Shinshinto periods (1596-1868). This five-volume set was published in the 1980's, and is in excellent condition, and comes with the original cardboard slip cases and a separate Table of Contents in English. The first four volumes contain many excellent detailed photographs of the works of the best swordsmiths of those two periods. Volume five contains photographs of tsuba (swordguards) from those same two periods. A set in this condition is hard to find. Each book stands 12-1/2 inches tall and is 9 inches wide. Thicknesses range from 1-1/2 inches to 2 inches.

Giovanni BOTERO (Bene, od. Bene Vagienna, 1544 - Torino 1617).
Bibliografia: Schilder, Gunter, Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica, vol VII; Tooley, Guide to Maps of Africa, p. 67." St Helena was an important early re-supply point for the Portuguese from the late 1400s, particularly on their return voyages from Asia. This map appeared in Linschoten's book. The map shows a detailed view of the island: the town, landing places, etc. Ships at anchor in the harbor fly the Portuguese standard. Three elaborate cartouches dominate the upper part of the map, one being the arms of Portugal. A large compass rose is on the bottom left of the map. The engraver for this map was Baptista van Doetechum. References: Schilder, Gunter, Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica, vol VII; Tooley, Guide to Maps of Africa, p. 67. 1596. VALERINI, Flaminio (fl. fine XVI secolo), Raunanza de' fiumi, overo Dell'ambasciaria de' signori veronesi al Ser.mo Marin Grimani prencipe di Venetia. Componimento heroico di Monsignor Flaminio Valerino, Tradotto in versi sciolti italiani per Giacop'Antonio Bianchino. Verona Girolamo Discepolo 1596 In 4°, cc. (12).
