Wagehenaer, 1596. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 33 x 51 cm.This chart shows the Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland coastlines from Robin Hood's Bay to Coquet Island. North is oriented to the right of the page. Part II of the "Spieghel ..." was first published in 1585 in Leiden by the Plantijn Press and this example of the map would appear to be a first edition - the title text is only in Dutch and text on the verso is also Dutch. The signature of the engraver, Doetecum, appears at lower right. The North Sea is decorated with sailing ships, sea monsters and an elaborate compass rose, while a scale of miles is also given at lower right. The " Spieghel der Zeevaardt " is unique among printed rutters of the sixteenth century, as it was the first to contain maps. Furthermore, it outranks any other rutter of the period with its splendid presentation of charts and text. As such, it stood out as a model for the folio pilot guides of the seventeenth century. Koeman writes; "Thanks to the unparalleled skill of the engravers Baptist and Ioannes Van Deutecom, the original manuscript maps were transformed into the most beautiful maps of the period. The composition and adornment have greatly contributed to the splendour of what originally were simple sketch charts; the typography of the Plantijn printing house further added to the quality of the book". BRAUN, Georg & HOGENBERG, Frans.
1596 - Cologne, c.1598, Latin text edition. Coloured. 360 x 510mm. Szolnock was an important fortness that was in Ottoman hand s from 1552 to 1685. The plan, by Jorge Hoefnagel, was published in the sixth and last volume of the 'Civitas Orbis Terrarum', which contained many plans illustrating events in the recent wars between the Holy Roman Empire and the Ottomans. Although Braun's commentary describes the fortifications as 'impregnable', Györ was taken by the Ottomans later in the year that Hoefnagel visited, holding it for four years. The situation of the city is reflected in the staffage: in the foreground are 'Heyducks' (mercenaries) a Polish knight (with arrows protruding from his shoulders) and a captured Turk with a horse with an ornamental saddle. LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huygen van.
1596 - Amsterdam, c.1596. Coloured. Two sheets conjoined as issued, total 395 x 530mm. Binding folds flattened; bottom margin extended with contemporary paper. A highly decorative map, engraved by Henricus van Langren after Arnold Florent van Langeren for Linschoten's 'Itinerario', a manual for sailing to the East Indies, based on Linschoten's own experiences and secret Portuguese guides. The dissemination of this information broke the Portuguese monopoly of trade with the Far East. The map displays all the features that made this period the golden age of decorative cartography: the titles, in Latin and Dutch, are within a strapwork cartouche, as are the scales; in the sea are two finely-engraved compass roses, sea-monsters and galleons; filling the gaps in China are an elephant, camel, giraffe and rhinoceros. Shown are Burma, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and the Philippines, around the coast of China to Korea & Japan. Korea is an almost round island; Japan is described by Walter as 'shrimp-shaped'. On the right edge is 'Beach, the Gold Province', often taken for Australia. This derives from Marco Polo's 'Locach', a place the Chinese told him was far to the south. In a 1552 edition of Grynaeus's 'Novus Orbis Regionum' the name was mistranscribed to 'Boeach', then shortened to Beach. However today is it believed that 'Lochach' was 'Lo-huk', the Cantonese name for Lopburi, a kingdom in southern Thailand. WALTER 12.

ACOSTA, Gioseffo di, trad gio. Paolo Galucci Salodiano
Basa, 1596. In-4°; cc. (24), 173, 1 cb. Palau 1991; Sabin 124.
