The Spanish Inquisition forced de Bry, a Protestant, to flee his native Spanish-controlled Southern Netherlands. He moved around Europe, starting from the city of Liège in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège (where he was born and grew up), then to Strasbourg, Antwerp, London and Frankfurt, where he eventually settled. In 1590 Theodorus de Bry and his sons published a new, illustrated edition of Thomas Harriot's "A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia "about the first English settlements in North America (in modern-day North Carolina). His illustrations were based on the watercolor paintings of colonist John White. The book sold well, and the next year de Bry published a new one about the first French attempt … [Click Below for Full Description]

LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huyghen van
Amsterdam: Jan Huygen van Linschoten. Map. Copperplate engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 15.25 x 21.5" This spectacular circa 1596 map of South America by Jan Huygen van Linschoten depicts the entire continent of South America with north to the right. The map includes Florida and the Caribbean. This early and important map is one of the most ornate maps of the continent ever made. Based on the work of Petrus Plancius, who inturn used Iberean sources for the coastlines, this map combines two of Plancius' maps, with exceptional detail. Although the coastlines, expecially along the Atlantic coast, show a striking departure from reality and the continent itself is bulging on the sides, several place names are included as are capes, bays, and settlements. The interiors, relatively unexplored at the time, note fictitious mountains and rivers. Several interesting vignettes throughout depicts cannibals in Brazil, Patagonian Giants and strange animals including one creature with a human face on a lion's body, with a stripped tail. Sea monsters and ships are also included in the ocean. Cartographically the map shows several speculations representing the limited knowledge of the region at the time. Terro del Fueggo, first reached by Magellan, is here shown to be part of the large speculated continent of Terra Australis that extends westward. Two elaborately ornate cartouches in the top left and bottom right include the Latin title and a Dutch description of the map. The engraver Arnold Floris van Langren identifies himself as Author et Sculptor of the map. The text describe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bound in later (18th century) vellum with 19th-century red leather label (partially eroded), page edges stained red (faded), with old ink manuscript title on lower edge of text block. Binding a little soiled with short split in lower front joint. Intermittent toning to leaves, occasional marginal foxing, and light marginal dampstaining toward rear, cobweb worming to upper portion of leaves 273-293 with some loss of text, but overall a nice clean copy in a handsome, well-preserved binding. The Third Sansovino Edition. First published by the Sessa brothers in Venice in 1564, the celebrated edition of Dante edited by Francesco Sansovino (1521-1583) brings together the commentaries of Christopher Landino, originally published in Florence in 1481, and Alessandro Vellutello, which first appeared in the edition published by Francesco Marcolini in Venice, 1544. The attractive wood cuts used by the Sessas in all three folio editions are from the original blocks cut for Marcolini's 1544 edition, though the number of illustrations was increased through repetition. Ranuccio, Farnese
Pacco 2.

LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huyghen van
Amsterdam: Jan Huygen van Linschoten. Map. Copperplate engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 15.25 x 21.5". This spectacular circa 1596 map of South America by Jan Huygen van Linschoten depicts the entire continent of South America with north to the right. The map includes Florida and the Caribbean. This early and important map is one of the most ornate maps of the continent ever made. Based on the work of Petrus Plancius, who inturn used Iberean sources for the coastlines, this map combines two of Plancius' maps, with exceptional detail. The text d … [Click Below for Full Description]
