[In Greek:] XENOPHONTOS TA HEURISKOMENA. [then:] XENOPHONTIS, PHILOSOPHI ET IMPERATORIS CLARISSIMI, QUAE EXSTANT OPERA. [WORKS IN GREEK AND LATIN]

Francofurti: Apud Andreae Wecheli heredes, 1596, 1594. n. Hardcover. A Very Substantial and Dazzlingly Gilt Award for Excellence in the Study of Greek. mm (). 6 p.l., 1,013 pp., 1,014-1,213 cols., [57] pp., [1] leaf (colophon). Two continuously paginated volumes bound in one. Translated by Johannes Leunclavius. EXTREMELY HANDSOME 17TH CENTURY FRENCH CALF, both boards with wide gilt floral border, covers with a field of fleurs-de-lys enclosing at center a large rectangle containing the gilt arms of the Parlement of Normandy (two lions passant holding up a wreath in which a sword and sceptres support scales of justice, the wreath also containing a banderole with the motto "Compensat, Vindicat, Aequat" ["She Balances, She Lays Claim, She Makes Equal"]); wide raised bands, spine with compartments of gilt fleurs-de-lys within double gilt fillets, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (three gouges on covers very carefully repaired, with gilt replicated, perhaps at the original time of binding, hinges apparently tightened). Printer's device on title page and colophon. Parallel columns of Latin and Greek. Second leaf with blindstamp seal of the Jesuit College of Rouen; front flyleaf with ink presentation inscription dated 1680 (see below); occasional underlining in pencil. Dibdin II, 567; VD16 X-10; Graesse VI/2, 483-84; Brunet V, 1490. Two hairline cracks on top of front cover, slight rubbing to gilt tooling at edges, minor foxing throughout (due to poor paper quality), more noticeably foxed in a couple of dozen gatherings (though never severe), intermittent very faint dampstain to lower right margin, otherwise a clean copy with ample margins in an especially well-preserved binding, the gilt still bright, and the leather showing only general minor wear. This is the most esteemed early modern translation of Xenophon's "Opera," offered here in a beautiful French prize binding executed 85 years after the volume's publication. Xenophon (ca. 430-354 B.C.) was a student of Socrates, and aside from Plato's, his works contain the only surviving examples of Socratic dialogues. Xenophon was best known to his contemporaries as an historian and general, as well as an opponent of Athenian democracy. Although born in Athens, Xenophon greatly admired Sparta and its political structure, and he eventually went to war for Sparta against the Athenians (this earned him land in Sparta, but exile from Athens). Xenophon's philosophical writings found popularity in the Renaissance, and some scholars have suggested that Machiavelli was particularly influenced by Xenophon's more "practical" (i.e., ruthless) approach to politics. According to Dibdin and Brunet, our translation by Hans Löwenklau (or Leunclavius, 1533?-93) was regarded by scholars at the time as not only superior to those that came before, but preferable even to the more famous 1625 Parisian edition by Antoine Estienne. The present second and enlarged edition (following the first in 1595) includes additional commentary and an index of Greek words and phrases compiled by Emilio and Francesco Porto. Given these additions, this particular copy is a most appropriate prize: the second flyleaf has an extensive inscription, announcing the awarding of the volume to Gabriel Boffinet, a student at the Archdiocesan Jesuit College in Rouen, for his excellence in Greek (the award made possible thanks to the generosity of the Parlement of Normandy). The presentation is signed by Charles Delaistre, then Provincial of the Society of Jesus in France, and is dated 20 August 1680. Boffinet (and subsequent readers) took excellent care of this book, but clearly used it as well, as there are occasional marks throughout in a sepia pencil, annotating and underlining key passages. Prize bindings from the 17th century appear on the market from time to time, but few could possibly be more impressive than this large, thick, and elaborately gilt volume.

DISCOVERIE OF THE LARGE, RICH, AND BEUUTIFUL EMPYRE OF GUIANA, WITH A RELATION OF THE GREAT AND GOLDEN CITIE OF MANOA (WHICH THE SPANYARDS CALL EL DORADO) AND OF THE PROVINCES OF EMERIA, ARROMAIA, AMAPAIA, AND OTHER COUNTRIES; WITH THEIR RIVERS, ADJOYNING

London, 1596. Small quarto. Full polished calf, leather labels, by Riviere; spine richly gilt in compartments, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Upper margin of titlepage skillfully extended, with three letters and parts of ten other letters in almost imperceptible pen facsimile. A few other minor repairs to blank margins. Else a handsome, near fine copy. With bookplates of Boies Penrose and another bookplate on the rear free endpaper. Sir Walter Raleigh, famous Elizabethan courtier and adventurer, was involved in numerous schemes for establishing English colonies in the New World and in raiding the Spanish empire in the Americas. In the 1580s he was a major figure in the English court and in naval and military ventures. But in 1592, Raleigh fell from grace for marrying one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting without the Queen's approval, and was thrown in the Tower. When released, he had lost much of his power and influence. He sought to regain it, and make a fortune, by a voyage to northern South America to seek the legendary city of El Dorado, where he believed he would find the streets paved in gold. Raleigh's voyage, usually called his second (after his voyage to found the first Virginia colony in 1585) took place under a cloud. He was strictly enjoined from attacking the Spanish, but on arrival in the Caribbean he attacked Trinidad, seizing the Spanish governor, and raiding the coast of Venezuela. He then pressed up the Orinoco River, going more than 400 miles upstream, where he turned back after obtaining samples of what appeared to be gold. This book details his pioneering exploration, in which he accurately describes the country in the most precise description made until the mid-19th century. The book also theorizes, at length, on the chimerical city of El Dorado and its vast wealth, and on the extraordinary gold ornaments he observed among the Indians of the region. The gold samples, however, proved to be worthless. On his return from the El Dorado expedition Raleigh resumed his active place in the English court, but was accused of treason on the accession of James I and confined in the Tower until 1616. When released, he made one last attempt at finding El Dorado, in a disastrous second voyage there which ended in total failure, and ultimately in Raleigh's execution. This is the third issue as identified by EUROPEAN AMERICANA and CHURCH (all were issued in 1596 and have essentially the same text and setting). This copy contains the misprint "Gallie" for "Gallego" on page [1], line 22. According to the entry in Sabin, a copy was offered by a London bookseller in 1885 at £50.

He ruled with Lucius Verus as co-emperor from 161 until Verus' death in 169. He was the last of the Five Good Emperors, and is also considered one of the most important Stoic philosophers.         The Discoverie of the Large, Rich and Bewtiful Empyre of Guiana,

London: Robert Robinson,, 1596. with a relation of the great and Golden Citie of Manoa (which the Spanyards call El Dorado) And of the Provinces of Emeria, Arromaia, Amapaia, and other Countries, with their rivers, adjoyning. Small quarto (182 ×135 mm). Old limp blind-stamped vellum. Custom brown morocco box. Woodcut ornament to title, occasional woodcut initials and headpieces. Pale dampstain, final leaf P4 with marginal tears and a chip, wormtrack to inner blank margins of leaves B2-D1, binding soiled and with small tears, front free endpaper relaid, rear endpaper lacking; overall a very good copy with ample margins. First edition, with 12v line 12 beginning "it, there". There were three editions of this work published in the same year, more or less page-for-page reprints but with many minor differences between them sufficient to show that they are distinct editions. Sabin considers this the third, but more recently (1991) the third volume of the revised edition of STC has named this edition as the true first. The caption title on leaf B1r and running titles on pages B2v, B3r, and B4v are in two settings; the caption title reads either "Sir Walter Raleghs discouerie of the golden empire of Guiana." or "The discouerie of Guiana." This copy has the latter setting. "In this work Raleigh gives an account of his second voyage (1595) and seems to confirm the marvellous tales concerning the Spanish city of El Dorado, which he calls by the Indian name 'Manoa'. Camus says he described the country with the exactness of a person who had been born there, but that when he speaks of the richness of Guiana he seems to have been seduced by false appearances and the accounts of the natives and Spaniards, as he did when describing the Amazons and the people whose faces seemed placed on their breasts. Another writer, with perhaps greater justness, says: 'Raleigh takes the utmost pains to state what he saw with his own eyes, what he was told by the Spaniards, or by the natives of the country, and what he inferred of the great riches of Guiana, from their accounts compared with his own observations.' This work was made use of by Hakluyt (Vol. 3); De Bry, Great Voyages, Part VIII; Hulsius, Part V; and in many other collections of voyages. Garnett includes it in this list of Three Hundred Notable Books (p. 40)" (Church). "Dedicated to Cecil and Howard of Effingham, it was an elegant and memorable piece of travel writing, at once a self-justification and a call to exploit his discoveries … The book was read widely, both at home and abroad. Latin, German, and Dutch editions all appeared within five years …Yet, all these tales of distant marvels failed to move the Cecils or the queen." (ODNB).

1596 - Condemning the cruelty towards the rebellious Araucanian Natives of Chile; a masterpiece poem of the 16th century. 1596. Perpiñan. Sanson Arbus. In 12mo (139 mm x 73 mm). 17 ff. + 323 + 2 ff. + 1 [blank]. Contemporary vellum, ties missing. A fine example of this rare book; only faint foxing spots, entirely genuine example. Third complete edition, comprising the three parts –the first edition, 1569, only contains the first part. The Araucana is set in 37 cantos in octavas, narrating the Spanish conquest of the Araucanian Indians, under the command of Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza (1535 – 1609), Governor of Chile and later Viceroy of Peru. It is one of most reliable sources on the conquest of the region, undisputed in its veracity and accuracy. Ercilla was well aware of the norm demanded to the chroniclers of the Indies: truth in what was seen and lived “adtestatio rei visae”. The situation in Chile demanded the expansion south, deep within land of the fierce Araucanos, who needed to be pacified. The recently appointed Viceroy of Peru sent out an expedition to do so -which lasted from 1555 until 1562-, commanded by his own son, Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza; Ercilla first heard of the expedition from Alderete whilst in England, where he was as part of the group accompanying Philip to marry Mary Tudor. Ercilla´s adventurous spirit was awakened and shortly parted for Chile, participating in the young Governor´s campaign against the insurgent Indians from 1557. Ercilla was apparently distressed by the cruelty and brutality employed in the conquest and warfare with the tribe, and wrote the Araucana to express his feelings. The Araucana stands as one of the earliest poems dealing with the conquest of South American natives; furthermore, it is an early source of knowledge of the Chilean tribe, its customs, and warfare technics, as well as colonial officers posted to America. This edition is rare, with no copies having sold at auction in over 50 years. Palau, 80420. Salvá, 581. Medina, BHA, 372. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

4 Bl., 536 S. Schlichter Pappbd d. 18. Jahrh. (berieben, Kanten teils beschabt).

Frankfurt, Andree Wechsels Erben, 1596.. . "His letters contain perhaps the most interesting of all accounts of Turkish life, and his description and analysis of the Ottoman state can hardly be superseded" (Blackmer). - Exlibris v. Breitenbauch. Anstreichungen. Gutes und breitrandiges Exemplar. Kein Exemplar im JAP seit 1950. - VD 16, B 9867. Göllner 2188.       Lyon: Thibaud Ancelin, 1596. FIRST EDITION. 8vo., 3 parts in 1 volume. I: 1 f. (tear through title-page), 6 pp. II: pp. 3-7. III: 5 pp. including separate title-page. Old blue wrappers, preserved in fitted cloth case (Cloverleaf Studios) SAMMELBAND OF THREE RARE 16TH-CENTURY "ARRETS" FROM THE "GRANDS-JOURS DE LYON" ISSUED IN THE YEAR OF ITS CREATION (1596). * "The Grands-Jours were assizes or extraordinary sessions, which the parliaments and other superior courts held, from time to time, in some city within their jurisdiction, at a distance from their ordinary place of sitting, to hear the complaints which the inhabitants of the province might make against the judges and other judicial officers who had jurisdiction there; and to procure, by their presence, expedition in the dispatch of affairs, and particularly of criminal causes, &c. The rare occurrence and solemnity of these assizes, together with the importance of the causes tried therein, and the rank of the persons by whom they were held, probably gave rise to the appellation of Grands-Jours. [...] Charles le Bel caused some Grands-Jours to be held at Paris, to inquire into the conduct of certain individuals accused of malversation; they were capitally punished. The Grands-Jours, which were held after that time in other cities, were established by letters-patent and commission of the king, to decide, in the last resort, on criminal causes, and civil causes to a certain amount, in the provinces, bailiwicks, seneschalsies and 'pays' named in the king's letters, and only during the time appointed by the same. It was particularly their business to procure for the inhabitants of the provinces greater expedition and a diminution of expense, in the prosecution of their suits. [...] Such were the Grands-Jours held at Bordeaux, in the reign of Charles VII.; at Angers in 1539 ; at Moulins in 1534, 1540, 1559; at Poitiers in 1454, 1530, 1541, 1567 and 1629; at Riom in 1546; at Tours in 1533 and 1547; at Troves in 1402, 1535 and 1583; at Lyons in 1596; at Clermont in Auvergne in 1665-6, and at Puy-en-Velay, for Languedoc, in 1666. [...] The ordinance of Blois of 1579, ordained (art. 206) that the Grands-Jours should be held every year, and directed that the governors and deputy-governors of the provinces where the Grands-Jours might be held, and also the bailiffs and seneschals, should be present, to see that the decisions of the courts were carried into execution. [...] Before the parliament of Brittany was made a sovereign court, the parliament of Paris used to send deputies every year, to hold the Grands-Jours at Rennes and Nantes. [...] Besides the Grands-Jours held by the sovereign courts, the name of Grands-Jours was given to some tribunals which were established by various princes and seigneurs, to decide on appeals from the judges of their respective jurisdictions. Grands-Jours are no longer held in France.       S.l. (Paris): s.n., 1596. ONLY EDITION. IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. 12mo. COLLATION: A4 + [B]2 = 6 ff., COMPLETE. Paginated [1], 2-11, [1] pp. (final blank). With large woodcut culs-de-lamp on A1. UNBOUND as issued, with the edges untrimmed. Final two pages with discoloration along early fold, affecting three lines of text with loss of a few letters. Preserved in a fitted cloth case by Cloverleaf Studio No other copy seems to be recorded. * Extremely early Royal edicts and regulations for Cabarets, Taverns, and Hotels, with special consideration given to issues of taxation. Herein are precise tax figures and detailed methods of payment (including penalties for non-payment) toward taxes on food and wine. Of particular interest: the capacity of Judges to rule on various crimes committed by the proprietors of said businesses, as well as the functions of the "Huissiers" and "Sergents" (two of the least-important officeholders appointed by the King). * Our pamphlet must be closely related to the unique Royal Act (Folembray: January 17, 1596) Edict, held by the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, namely the "Lettres de jussion rendues pour l'execution du reglement donne sur le fait des hôtelleries, cabarets et tavernes et pour le recouvrement de la finance de ceux qui n'ont pas paye leurs taxes ou qui ont refuse de le faire" (S.l., n.d.) -- the BnF example is paginated "17-23 pp." (sic) and therefore must have been extracted from a larger work, whereas ours is obviously a singular publishing effort. * In outstanding original condition.

        La pratica di prospettiva

1596. SIRIGATTI, Lorenzo. La pratica di prospettiva. Comprised of engraved title-page, 3 ff. text, 65 engraved plates (including the engraved half-title for the Libro Secondo), plus a woodcut printer's device at the end of the Libro Primo. Text on the verso of all plates in the first book with exception of plates 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 34, and 43, no text in the second book. Folio, 403 x 265 mm, bound in English eighteenth-century calf, red morocco spine label stamped in gilt. Venice: Girolamo Franceschi, 1596. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition, dedicated to Ferdinando de' Medici by Sirigatti on 20 July 1596. La pratica di prospettiva is considered by many to be one of the most elegant works on perspective, and places Lorenzo Sirigatti among the important writers of his time on the subject: Barbaro, Vignola, and Egnatio Danti. "Questa è la più elegante delle edizioni di libri prospettici pei tipi, pei caratteri, per la carta" (Cicognara). The work is at once attractive and instructive. Libro Primo begins with twelve plates discussing the basics, depicting simple geometrical forms and their perspectival projections. This is followed by a series of 31 increasingly more complicated projections of stairs, facades, theater floor plans, column designs, portals, a lute, and a violin. The Millard catalogue draws specific attention to Sirigatti's contribution to stage design in the first book, noting that "he is the first to mention that the full effect of the perspective frame, for instance in a stage set, can be enjoyed only by those sitting along the main axis." This is demonstrated on plate 43. Almost all the illustrations are accompanied by concise one-page explanations. Libro Secondo eschews textual explanation and lets the viewer experience the remarkable illustrations. They consist of a series of Escher-like solids floating in space created to demonstrate ways of representing shadows on complex polyhedric solids. A Mannerist tour-de-force, these represent some of the finest illustrations of their kind. It has been suggested by Samuel Edgerton that Galileo studied Sirigatti's solids to help train his eye to see the contours of the moon. Some very light scattered foxing and marginal staining, spine with some early restoration. The title-page has been trimmed with some loss as is true in many copies. Complete with the woodcut colophon at the end of volume one. PROVENANCE: The Earls of Macclesfield with their blind-stamped coat-of-arms on the decorative title-page and the first two leaves. The South Library ex-libris stamp on inside front paste-down. Cicognara 860. Fowler 336 (incomplete). Millard, Italian 129. Mortimer, Italian 479 (both copies incomplete).
