[two lines in Greek, then] Isocratis Orationes et epistolae cum Latina interpretatione Hier. VVolfii, ab ipso postremùm regognita. Henr. Steph. in Isocratem Diatribæ VII: quarum van observationes Harpocrationis in eundem examinat. Guil. Cantero interprete.

Geneva: Excudebat Henricus Stephanus Folio. [14] ff., 427, [1 (blank)], 131, [1 (blank)], xxxiiii pp., [1 (blank)], [4] ff., 31, [1 (blank)] pp., [9] ff. (without the final blank).. 1593 Here is Henri Estienne's last major work and his final folio edition of any classical work. Schreiber considers it an "important edition" as did Dibdin. The text is Hieronymous Wolf's — first published in 1551 — as revised by Estienne, who also supplied seven Diatribae (Dissertations). These latter are found on pp. 3?-31 at the end of the volume. The texts of the orations and "letters" of the great Athenian orator (436?-338 B.C.) are printed in double-column format, with the Greek presented in exquisite Greek type in the inner columns and the Latin translation in roman type in the outer ones. A version of the famous Estienne printer's device graces the title-page. 18th-century plain calf, recently rebacked; round spine, raised bands accented with gilt ruling. Gilt-tooled center devices in spine compartments; two gilt-lettered spine labels. Title-page dust-soiled, a library's blind pressure-stamps, properly deaccessioned with no additional stamps. => A covetable exemplar.

Pharmacopoea Amstelredamensis, senatus auctoritate munita. Amsterdam, Willem & Joan Blaeu, 1636. 4to. Sprinkled calf (ca. 1700?), gold-tooled spine and board edges. .

Daems & Vandewiele, p. 47 (5 copies); STCN (5 copies). First edition of the first Dutch pharmacopoeia, in Latin, with recipes for nearly 200 medicines, compiled anonymously by Nicolaes Tulp (1593-1674) by order of the city of Amsterdam, to serve as an official legal standard for the correct preparation of numerous medicines. In 1632 Tulp had been the demonstrating surgeon in Rembrandt's Anatomy lesson, he was a leading physician and oversaw city medical and pharmacological matters, and was to become a city burgomaster in 1654. Several cities in the southern Low Countries and Germany, and even London, had produced pharmacopoeias before any Dutch city and Tulp based his on those published in Augsburg, Cologne and London. With 18th-century owners' inscriptions on the title-page; "Imbert"(struck through) and "Ex Biblioth. de Montesquieu". Slightly browned, but otherwise in very good condition and with generous margins. The binding is somewhat worn with cracks in the hinges and a couple restorations in the corners, but otherwise good. The first Dutch pharmacopoeia, beautifully produced by Willem and Joan Blaeu..

Testamenti Veteris sive, Libri Canonici Priscae Indeorum Ecclesiae a Deo traditi, Latini recens ex Hebraeo facti, brevibrisque Scholiis illustrati ab Immanuele Tremellio & Franciso Junio,

Londini: N Guliel, 1593 A good copy of the 3rd edition of what was considered to be a ground-breaking protestant version of the Bible. Immanuel Tremellius, a convert from Judaism to Christianity and then to Calvinism, worked with his son-in-law Franciscus Junius, on the translation. The New Testament is laid out in 2 columns, the first with Tremellius' interpretation and the second with Theodore Beza's. Beza did not believe that Jerome was the translator of the Vulgate and instead used Erasmus' writings - so this version allows a comparison between the two. It was first published in 1579 and by 1764 had gone through 33 different printings. This copy is in a full leather binding probably dating from the late 1700's/early 1800's but retaining some leather from an earlier binding. It is complete but the boards are attached to the spine by the sewing and the leather has split. The spine, with title label and raised bands is scuffed, particularly at the top and the boards have a lot of scuffing and wear. The contents are complete and in very good condition. The endpapers are marbledc and there is a small ink inscription from 1814 on the second iniitial blank, and a further signature from 1832 on the 3rd initial blank. Contents: decorative title page 1593; dedication 1p; preface 4pp; lectori 1p; Text 'Primus Liber' pp 1-177 (stain in bottom corner p 129); blank; title page Pars Secunda; preface 4pp; text pp1-104 (with numbering only on facing pages); blank; title page Pars Tertia; preface 4pp; text pp 1-75 (numbering on facing pages only)(stain 1cm x 3 cm extending from gutter pp 15-17 affecting a small piece of text; p 24 has a historic page repair in silk thread); title page Pars Quarti; preface 2pp; text pp 5-130 (no text missing - page numbering on both sides of paper); blank; title page Libri Apocryphi Sive Appendix testamenti Veteris ad Canonem 1592; preface 4pp; text p 4-74 (pages numbered on face only); title page D N Jesu Christi Testamentum Novum Sive Foedus Novum, Franciscus Junius 1592; dedication 2pp; note re translation 1p; contents and note 1p; text in dual columns pp 1-187 (page numbers on face only)(repaired page tear bottom margin p177); Prolegomena 2pp; Apocalypsis pp 189-198; final blank. Contents very clean - some occasional staining to top page margin. A very nice copy.

Rare example of Ciceros Tusculanae disputationes The Tusculanae Disputationes (the Tusculan Disputations), is a series of books written by Cicero, around 45 BC,[1] attempting to popularize Stoic philosophy in Ancient Rome. It is so called as it was reportedly written at his villa in Tusculum. The Tusculanae Quaestiones consists of five books: "On the contempt of death","On bearing pain","On grief of mind. "On other perturbations of the mind", Whether virtue alone be sufficient for a happy life" . The rhetor's theme De contemptu mundi, on the contempt of the world, was taken up by Boethius in the troubled closing phase of Late Antiquity and by Bernard of Cluny in the first half of the twelfth century. In the Tusculan Disputations is the locus classicus of the legend of the Sword of Damocles. Binding rubbed and worn, som minor spotting; first and last pages dog-eared with some corner loss (not close to text); first and last pages dusty; some marginal ink stains; last leaf with abrasion, worming and minor loss; some light staining.

Pedro Madrigal 1593 In folio, cartone recente, cc. (4).

Esse furono infatti impresse in Francia, forse a Parigi (cfr. J. Balsamo, Les origines parisiennes du 'Thesoro politico' (1589), in: "Bibliothèque d'Humanisme et Renaissance", 57, 1995, pp. 7 - 23). S. Testa, Did Giovanni Maria Manelli pubblish the 'Thesoro politico' (1589)?, in: "Renaissance Studies", vol. 19, 3, giugno 2005, p. 380).

«The climax of the Italian tragedy of blood may be illustrated by Muzio Manfredi's Semiramis. The plot was based on the semi-mythical history of the fabulous warrior-queen who succeeded her husband Ninus as ruler of Assyria and founded the city of Babylon. The scene is Babylon at the close of Semiramis' career. Ninus has been dead for some time, and their only son is now grown. Manfredi's principal model was Cinthio's Orbecche, but he also borrowed from Speroni's Canace and probably from Groto's Dalida» (M.T. Herrick, Italian Tragedy in the Renaissance, Urbana, 1965, pp. 206-207). M. Manfredi-A. Decio, La Semiramis. Acripanda.

      - Antwerp: Ex Officina Plantiniana, Apud Viduam, & Ioannem Moretum, 1593/4. 4to, (16), 120, (8) pp. Engr. publ. vignette on title and woodcut printer's mark on last p., 22 engr. ills. by Peeter van der Borcht. PrinterÕs device on title page repeated on final page. Original or very early limp vellum, title on backstrip. Many illustrations, some hand-coloured and heightened in gold. Early signature on title-page in gold. Text partially detached from binding, title-page with marginal chipping and staining, withal an interesting copy with early English provenance. First edition of a learned and beautifully illustrated treatise on the Holy Cross by one of the most famous Dutch humanists and philologians of the 16th century. He wrote it at Louvain after his reconciliation with Catholicism, to give a proof of his piety. The engravings are due to Van der Borcht, one of the best book-illustrators of the period. An interesting feature is that the title-page is signed in gold ink in an Elizabethan hand "William Huntly Patior ut potior" and some of the woodcuts are colored and heightened in gold. The Huntly family were nobility and close to Mary Queen of Scots but the motto is exclusive to the Spottiswood family who had nothing to do with the Huntlys or Mary Queen of Scots, so perhaps it was just a familiar Latin tag. The text is heavily annotated throughout but by another hand. The text deals with the history of crucifixion as a manner of execution and describes the different ways to crucify someone as well as the kind of wood for and the construction of the cross. The quite gruesome illustrations include impalement and inverted crucifixion, crucifixion in a bonfire, and crucifixion in the wild where animals feast on the martyr. Adams 778. Van der Haeghen, Bibliographie lipsienne, I, 187. Broadly held in Institutions but scarce in commerce. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

VD16 H 6141. Nicht im STC (vgl. aber STC 424).
