Trattenimenti ... dove da vaghe donne, e da giovani huomini rappresentati sono honesti, e dilettevoli giuochi; narrate novelle; e cantate alcune amorose canzonette

appresso Bernardo Giunti, 1592. Cm. 19,5, pp. (8) 286 (2). Bel marchio tip. al frontespizio, graziose testatine e capilettera xil. Testo in corsivo. Legatura antica in piena perg. rigida; dorso a 4 sottili nervi e titoli in oro su tass. in marocchino. Cfr. Iccu; Gamba, 1241; Camerini, Annali Giunti, II, 482..

Autograph document signed and dated February 23, 1591 attesting to a tenor's service to a Milanese chapel

1 page. Folio. Document executed in an attractive late 16th century hand certifying that one Giovanni Battista Rossoni di Caravagio served as a tenor at a chapel in Milan. Slightly worn and soiled; browned at edges; creased at central fold; one small hole not affecting text. Valdessio describes himself in the present document as a "maestro di castello" in Milan, the ensemble attached to the Spanish garrison. We have been unable to locate any additional biographical information on Valdessio. Rossoni appears as having moved to the Duomo's choir in 1592 (see printed-sacred-music.org/manuscripts/00000000002914); he is gone from the lists by 1600, thus he would have been at the Castle from 1587-91 and the Duomo thereafter, most probably until his death. We would like to thank Professor Robert L. Kendrick of the University of Chicago for his kind assistance in the cataloguing of this item.

In 1570 he issued the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", the first modern "Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term "Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Most of the maps in Theatrum have been engraved by Frans Hogenberg. At the time of publication, the atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. Nevertheless it was a big success and around 7000 copies have been printed until 1612 in many editions and six different languages. Beside the Theatrum, Ortelius compiled a series of historical maps and published it in the "Parergon Theatri" which was bound with the Theatrum from 1579 onwards or published separately.         The True Vse of Armorie, Shewed by Historie, and plainly proued by example: the necessitie therof also discouered: with the maner of differings in ancient time, the lawfulnes of honorable funerals and moniments: with other matters of Antiquitie, incident to the aduauncin of Banners, Ensignes, and marks of noblenesse and cheualrie.

by I. Iackson for Gabriell Cawood 1592 - FIRST EDITION, title within border of printers ornaments, 1 large woodcut initial, 15 woodcut coats of arms within text, all but 1 of them with old hand-colouring, without the initial leaf (blank except for signature mark), first 5 leaves a trifle short at top, some headlines trimmed, small burn hole in L4 touching a couple of letters on the verso, a bit of soiling and some damp-stains, verso of last leaf dust soiled, pp. [ii], 159, small 4to, 18th-century mottled calf, gilt roll tooled border on sides, spine gilt in compartments, twin lettering pieces, rebacked preserving spine, inner hinges strengthened with cloth, corners worn, some contemporary annotations, mostly just repeating in the marginwords in the text, verso of last leaf with an early (if not contemporary) proverb in Italian, and the signature of Peter Wentworth, paper lozenge with 'The Bassett Armes / 1594' printed in red. Rare. 'In 1592 Wyrley published The True Use of Armorie. Sir William Dugdale, who reprinted the main text in his The Antient Usage in Bearing of Arms in 1682, quoted William Burton as saying that his friend Erdeswick had told him that he himself was the real author of the book, "though he gave leave to Mr Wyrley (who had been bred up under him) to publish it in his own name" . Anthony Wood, however, considered the claim one more sign that Erdeswick's mind was unbalanced. Wyrley's research had its special dangers, especially in view of his connection with Erdeswick, a known recusant. In 1592 the Warwickshire recusancy commissioners reported that 'one Woorley, sometime servant to one Sampson Erswicke was suspected to be a lewd and a seditious papist', resorting often 'as a wandering man, under the colour of tricking out of arms in churches' to the houses of 'gentlemen known to be ill-affected in religion' in Warwickshire and neighbouring counties. He was also suspected of secretly carrying letters between papists ' (ODNB). The text is followed by 2 poems, The Glorious Life and Honorable Death of Sir Iohn Chandos, and The Honorable Life and Languishing Death of Sir Iohn de Gralhy Capitall de Buz. These occupy pp. 29 to the end, by far the bulk of the book. They are in the style of the Mirour for Magistrates. (ESTC S120446)

First and only edition of this translation into Dutch of the fiercely anti-Socianian work by Johannes Cloppenburch (1592-1652), published in the year he died. The translation is based on his Compendiolum Socinianismi , printed a year before in Franeker. Cloppenburgh extensively discusses the history and rise of Socianism and deals at length with the refutation of its religious doctrines. Few minor defects. Good copy.

We stayed by this author a treaty in which the first five parts deals with recruits and recruitment, the second of the organization of the Legion and the ancient Roman armies, the third military field exercises, the fourth of attack and defense of fortresses, the fifth for its concerns naval tactics. Printer's device on title page, woodcut diagram of a roman encampment on folded leaf, and 51 woodcuts in the text (machinery, battlements, weapons, etc.). [16], 320; [16], 480, [31] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Plantin Vegetius, 1592. Magnificent edition of the classic by Vegetius, the fourth-century Roman military writer of whose personal life little is known, but whose book DE RE MILITARI has been constantly reprinted and translated into every modern language, has proved to be a primary source of our knowledge of Roman warfare. It contains 5 books: the first is on Recruits and Recruitment; the second, on the organization of the Legions (the Roman infantry); the third, treats of the operations of an army in the middle of a campaign; the fourth, on attacking and defending fortifications; and the fifth, on naval tactics. This edition, printed by the famous Plantin press, with their printer's device on the title page, was edited by the scholar Godescalcus Stewechius and is one of the earliest editions to contain a commentary on Vegetius, along with a discussion of the editor's sources. Equally important to the edition, however, are the woodcut illustrations, which have contributed greatly to a general picture of the Roman army. Adams V-337

First and only edition of this translation into Dutch of the fiercely anti-Socianian work by Johannes Cloppenburch (1592-1652), published in the year he died. The translation is based on his Compendiolum Socinianismi, printed a year before in Franeker. Cloppenburgh extensively discusses the history and rise of Socianism and deals at length with the refutation of its religious doctrines. Few minor defects. Good copy.

Histoire des deux conquestes d'Espagne par les Mores, Par Abdulcacim Tarif Abentarique, Avec la description de l'Espagne, , la vie du grand Almansor par Ali Abensufian, et quelques lettres & pieces originales.Paris, Widow of François Muguet, 1708. 12mo. Contemporary mottled calf, with richly gold-tooled spine.

      - Brunet I, cols. 16-17; not in Blackmer. First edition of the second French translation of a history of the conquest of Spain by the Moors, detailing events from 712 to 761 A.D., a description of Spain during the same period, and a biography of Almanzor (ca. 938-1002), the Islamic ruler of the Iberian Peninsula at that time. It was first published in Spanish in 1592, and according to the title-page the history itself is translated from an original 8th-century Arabic chronicle by "Abdulcacim Tarif Abentarique", but now generally believed to have been written directly in Spanish by the "translator", Miguel de Luna (ca. 1550-1619). The same seems to be the case for the biography of Almanzor by "Ali Abensufian". The complete volume was translated into French for the present edition by Guy Alexis Lobineau (1666-1727). With owner's inscription on title-page. Some very minor water stains in the head margin throughout, a couple smudges and the title-page slightly thumbed, otherwise in very good condition. Spine subtly restored and possibly recased and bound a bit too tight.
