Montcada i Reixac. 1592. 50X25. Extremadament rar, unic. Ref 121 Biblioteca Q2D. BENCI Francesco SJ
1592. Woodcut IHS device on title page. 2 parts. 8vo (155 x 95mm.) [8], 383pp; [8], 325pp. Contemporary German blind-stamped pigskin with roll-tooled borders of medallion heads and foliage, both original clasps intact, spine backed with marbled paper and label in the 18th century. Ingolstadt: D. Sartorius, 1592. A handsome copy. Part 1 includes speeches on literature and funeral speeche, while the four books of Carmina in the second part are followed by the texts of the religious dramas (in verse) Ergastus and Philotimus which were performed before the distribution of prizes in the gymnasium of the Jesuit College in Rome in November 1587 and January 1590 respectively, and printed at the time. The author Benci (1542-94) had originally the forename Plauto, which he changed on becoming a Jesuit in 1571. Originally from Acquapendente, he studied and taught in Rome for many years, and was in correspondence with many scholars of the time, such as Marc Antoine Muret (who in a letter of 31 August 1567 urged him not to buy an imperfect book and to read Cicero daily), at whose funeral he preached:part 1 (pp. 219- 235) prints Benci's oration delivered at Muret's funeral, the second part (pp. 139-145) containing also an elegy on his death. Importantly benci for a number of years edited the Jesuit Litterae annuae, and wrote a poem on Jesuit martyrs in the missions, Quinque martyres published first in Venice in 1591. His separate works were originally printed in Italy (see Censimento 16), but as he states in his dedication to Carddinal Ascanio Colonna, dated 30 September 1590 from Rome, … [Click Below for Full Description]

STAPLETON, Thomas.
Antwerp, Pierre Beller, 1592. Two parts in one volume, 8vo, pp. [xvi], 263; 276, [12]; woodcut printer's device on title of second part, woodcut initials; slightly browned due to paper quality, but a good copy in contemporary limp vellum; head of spine torn and defective. Rare third edition, expanded, of Stapleton's handbook or 'storehouse' of scriptural devotions for Sundays and feast days, first published in 1589. An independent companion volume for the weekdays in Lent was first published in 1594. The 'most learned Roman Catholic of his time' (Wood), Stapleton was destined for a promising academic career before the death of Queen Mary; in exile under Elizabeth he became one of the most skilful of Catholic controversialists. His Promptuarium Catholicum was widely used, the volume for Sundays and feast days running to twenty-three editions by 1631, and for weekdays in Lent to eighteen. In it, Stapleton 'sought to focus on those phrases which directly challenged his Protestant opponents, or at least his view of what those Protestant opponents claimed, and he confronted their arguments directly, citing them by name and imputing dishonesty and fraud to them. Beyond scripture itself, chief among the authorities referred to by Stapleton in his commentaries were the writings of Augustine. This was typical of Stapleton's approach in the Promptuarium Catholicum for the Sunday gospels' (William J. Sheils, 'The Gospel, liturgy and controversy in the 1590s: Thomas Stapleton's Promptuaria', in James E. Kelly and Susan Royal, eds., Early Modern English Catholicism, 2016, pp. 189 205, p … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: E. Allde, for H. Astley, 1562 [i.e., 1592]. Third edition (first, 1581) of one of the greatest rarities in the entire literature of navigation and magnetism, and "one of the first truly scientific books published in England" (Waters, The Art of Navigation, p. 153). "It is usual to ascribe to Galileo the development of the scientific method in the seventeenth century. It will be seen that in England the principles underlying Galileo's methods had been in practice for a quarter of a century before the great Italian rose to fame" (ibid., p. 156, note). We know of only one other 16th-century edition of The New Attractive having appeared on the market - Horblit's copy of the fourth edition (1596) (in a modern binding), offered by H. P. Kraus in Cat. 168 (ca. 1975) for $15,000. The Newe Attractive "is the first English work devoted to the use of the compass, and it contains Norman's proposal for a magnetic field of force acting independently of matter - one of the most important concepts in the history of science" (Tomash & Williams). Norman's work was issued with A Discourse of the Variation of the Compasse, the only published work of William Borough (bap. 1536-98), which was based on Richard Eden's English translation of Jean Taisnier's study of terrestrial magnetism in his Opusculum perpetua ... De natura magnetis (1562). "In 1581 Robert Norman had published The Newe Attractive; it came out with William Borough's The Variation of the Cumpas as one book. ORTELIUS, Abraham.
Antwerp, 1592, Latin text edition. Coloured. Two sheets conjoined, total 730 x 485mm. Some restoration. An uncommon map of the classical British Isles, published in the Parergon, Ortelius's atlas of the ancient world. The map first appeared in 1590 and was replaced by a one-sheet map in 1595, although offprints were used as late as 1602. Van den Broecke estimates that only 710 examples were printed. Although the detail of the map is classical, with British tribes and Roman town names, the coastline is more up-to-date than Ortelius' 'modern' map, based on Saxton. The engraver is believed to be Jan Wierex, and this map certainly gave him a chance to show his skills: the sea has been filled with three cartouches, a large sea-battle and five ships.
