SKARGA, Piotr.
Krakow: W Architypography: Krola J M. y Koscielney Lazarzowej / Drukarnia Lazarzowa (Officina Lazari), 1592. Krakow: W Architypography: Krola J M. y Koscielney Lazarzowej / Drukarnia Lazarzowa (Officina Lazari), 1592. Book. Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. (190 x 155 mm). Text in Polish. 88 pages, vignette, initials. Religious printing directed against the infidels, especially against the Warsaw Confederation passed in 1573, an agreement between Christian denominations. The Warsaw Confederation guaranteed the Polish nobility, regardless of religion, equality and state protection, and eternal peace between those differing in faith. Father Skarga, however, believed that Poland should be unified religiously. The work published in 1592 simultaneously in Cracow and Poznan, anonymously, although it is not questioned by its authorship, because it was included with the changes to the Kazania o siedmiu sakramentach (Cracow 1600). The complaint justified the perpetrators of the church-based tumult in Cracow in 1591. He explained that it was only the children who started the innocent fun "from the church, they got a rag and ripped off and used to play in the church". He blamed Protestant, who reacted with the weapon "As the wolves between sheep, with sharp swords, the innocent people beat, sleave, chopped, and murdered [...] so that two hundred injured were counted". The Vpominanie do ewanyelikow brought a biased and incomplete account of the events of Cracow. The cloth made by the children was in fact a puppet depicting Satan, the father of "heresy". This was a frequent way of provokin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rarissima. Etching and engraving, circa 1592, without signature. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with "shield with star" watermark, with small margins, perfect conditions. The engraving shows Clement VIII, born Ippolito Aldobrandini (1536-1605), portrait of three quarters, sitting with his right hand rest … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ventura, Comino und Giovanni Botero (vermutete Verfasser bzw. Hrsg.)
- 3 Teile in 1 Band. Calvin, John
Geneva: Apud Iohannem le Preux, 1592. Rare early printing of Calvin's seminal work on systematic theology and one of the most influential works of Protestant theology. Folio, bound in full contemporary vellum with a burgundy spine label lettered in gilt, elaborate woodcut printer's device to the title page, woodcut headpiece and initial to the first page of text. In near fine condition with ownership inscriptions to the front free endpaper. An exceptional example. One of the most influential works of Protestant theology, John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion was first published in Latin in 1536 (at the same time as Henry VIII of England's Dissolution of the Monasteries) and soon in his native French language in 1541, with the definitive editions appearing in 1559 (Latin) and in 1560 (French). Calvin published the work with the intention of publishing an introductory textbook on the Protestant creed covering a broad range of theological topics from the doctrines of church and sacraments to justification by faith alone and Christian liberty. Throughout the work, Calvin vigorously attacked the religious teachings he considered unorthodox, particularly Roman Catholicism, which he was previously strongly devoted to before his conversion into Protestantism. Institutes in its first form was not merely an exposition of Reformation doctrine; it proved the inspiration to a new form of Christian life for many. It is indebted to Martin Luther in the treatment of faith and sacraments, to Martin Bucer in what is said of divine will and predestination, and to the later schol … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Platina, [Bartolomeo].
Venice: Barnardo Basa & Barezzo Barezzi, 1592. OCLC lists ten copies worldwide, three in North America, at Cornell, the University of Illinois, and the Newberry Library. Octavo. [40], 320 pp. Woodcut title-page device, woodcut portrait of Platina, woodcut scene on p. 1, and approximately 240 woodcut portraits of the Popes with their coats-of-arms. Contemporary limp vellum, a bit soiled. Last few leaves with some old soiling at top inner margin and bottom outer margin. Otherwise a very good copy. First edition edited by Tomaso Costo (ca. 1545-1613), the Neapolitan-born poet, classicist, and member of the Accademia della Crusca. He used the edition of Platina that had been corrected by Onofrio Panvinio (1529-1568). This is a particularly attractive small illustrated edition. Platina's (1421-1481) work originally appeared in 1474. It is particularly prized for its accounts of the Popes of his own era. Adams C2755 (listed under Costo). BM Italian STC, p. 596. (4) lvs. Extremely rare 'newsletter' on the raids of Hassan Pascha of Bosnia in Central Europe in the period 1591 - 1592. Hasan Predojevic (c. 1530 - 22 June 1593) was Beylerbey of Bosnia of and the Ottoman military commander who led an invasion of Habsburg Croatia. Young Nikola was taken to Constantinople as acem-i oglan (foreign child) and brought up in theSultan's court , converting to Islam, adopting the name Hasan and advancing to the post of çakircibasa (chief falconer). He was appointed Beglerbeg of Bosnia in 1591. A dynamic military leader, Hasan strengthened the army of the Eyalet, attacked Croatia and reached Sisak. Thomas Erdõdy, Ban of Croatia , launched a counterattack and seized much of the Moslavina region. Hasan forces of around 20,000 jansissaries continued to raid the region, with the idea of seizing the strategical town of Senj and its port, and to eliminate the Uskoci. Hasan brought his force to Bihac, which was conquered in June 1592 after eight days of siege. During the campaigns the Bosnian burned 26 cities throughout the Croatien Frontier and took some 35,000 warcaptives. In 1593 Hasan Pasha decided to advance further, but his force was defeated in an attempt to conquer Sisak, battle in which Hasan was killed.Göller 1894; Apponyi 1888. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(Antwerpen, Christoffel Plantijn, 1592).Handcoloured engraved map of Romania by János Zsámboky, with 2 decorative cartouches. Ca. 31 x 43,5 cmFrom Ortelius, Abraham. Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. - The first map of Transylvania was published in 1532. It was the work of Johannes Honterus (1498-1549). Around 1532 he often traveled to his native Transylvania, gathering information that was to serve in his design of a map of Transylvania, one that he engraved and printed in Basel, and the very first one of the region to be printed. The only known copy of the map survives in the National Library of Hungary. It is known that Honter was not pleased with the map - he tried to get back all copies that he had sent to friends and other scientists. His plan was to improve the map before reprint and distribution. Dedicated to the leadership of Brasov, it was the basic design for all later maps of Transylvania, up to the early 18th century. Abraham Ortelius made the map famous by beautifully engraving it in copper, based on the ‘Transilvania' - map from Johann Sambucus, who made a remake of the map of Honterus. (Engelmann 1982, p. 41 - 43)The map of Sambucus does not show the whole region, its focus is Siebenbuergen, the part inhabited by Transylvanian Saxons. Hungarian / Secler names are mentioned for the major cities and the Rumanian population is indicated by generic names. This work is based on the map of Johannes Honter, a Saxon of the city of Kronstadt (today Brasov, Romania) in Transylvania in the Kingdom of Hungary. [Click Below for Full Description]

ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM
16E-EEUWSE KAART VAN HET GRAAFSCHAP HOLLAND ?Hollandiae antiquorum catthorum sedis nova descriptio, auctore Iacobo a Daventria? [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
