Frankfurt am Main: J. Wechel & P. Fischer, 1591. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (175 x 103 mm). [8], 184 pp. Signatures: )?(4, A-K8, L4, M8. Printer's woodcut device on titles, a few woodcut illustrations in text after the author's drawings. 18th century full calf, spine with 3 raised bands, gilt and titled in compartments (spine ends chipped, hinges cracked, corners bumped). Internally somewhat browned and brown-spotted (a bit stronger in outer margins), a few leaves with small worm track to blank margin, leaves trimmed close (not affecting text or illustrations). Good copy. ----Norman 2132; Adams V-278; Choulant-Frank pp. 214-15; cf. Garrison-Morton 1377.2 and 1478 (both for the first edition of De nervis opticis); NLM/Durling 4541; Waller 9816; Wellcome 6499; DSB XIII, p.587. - The exceedingly rare first edition of Varolio's Anatomy. The second of Varolio's two books, the posthumously published Anatomiae "has been described as a teleologic physiology of man" (DSB). Varolio's reputation is largely based on his De nervis opticis (originally published in 1573) in which he presented a new method of dissecting the brain from the base up. This allowed for better observation of the organ's structure. "As a result of his new method of dissecting, Varoli was able to make some contributions to the knowledge of the course and termination of the cranial nerves and to trace the course of the optic nerve approximately to its true termination. His name is perpetuated in the 'pons varolii'" (Garrison-Morton). The second part of this edition comprises the second edition of De nervis opticis. Very Good.

Alpini also mentioned coffee for the first time in this work" (Norman). Good....

First edition of the biography of the famous abbess and reformer of Port-Royal, Mother Angélique de Sainte Magdelaine Arnauld (1591-1661) and notes on the history of Port-Royal, Maubuisson and other monasteries by her niece Angélique de Saint Jean Arnauld d'Andilly (1624-1684). Together with notes on her own life and the events at Port-Royal during the years she was abbess there. Angélique de Sainte Magdelaine Arnauld is famous for having reformed the Abbey of Port-Royal and other Cistercian abbeys such as Maubuisson in such a way that her monastery, of which she was abbess from an early age on, could become the centre of Jansenism in France. The many difficulties and even prosecutions which were the result of these reforms, are described in a very lively manner. These accounts form a very important source for the history of Port-Royal, frequently cited by the historiographer of the reform movement of Port-Royal, Sainte-Beuve. Blaise Pascal was one of her admirers. With an owner's inscription (Petri Dupré, 1770) and a library stamp of the Paters Assumptionists (Heide Huis) at Nijmegen. A good copy.

FRANCE – LOIRE VALLEY / IMPORTANT EARLY CARTOGRAPHY: DESCRIPTION DU PAIS BLAISOIS. / JOANNES TEMPORARIUS FACIEBAT BLESIS ANNO MESSIAE NATI 1592. EPOCHE CHRISTIANAE 1590. MUNDI 5610.

Tours 1591 - Copper engraving (Good, some very minor restoration along old folds and to lower right corner, but overall clean and pleasing), 48 x 34 cm (19 x 13.5 inches). A very rare and historically important monument of early French cartography - the original edition of the first printed map of Le Blésois (Blois) region of France predicated on surveys, made by Jean de Temps and published by Maurice Bouguereau as part of his ‘Le Théâtre François’ (1594), the first national atlas of France. This very rare and excellent map of the region around Blois, France, is the earliest printed map of the region predicated on surveys, remaining the base map of the region for some decades, including for the map of the region by Abraham Ortelius. It is based on the original surveys of Jean du Temps, a local lawyer and Renaissance polymath, and was issued within Maurice Bouguereau’s Le Théâtre François (Tours, 1594), the first national atlas of France. The map depicts Le Blésois, a traditional region of France that was then part of the Province of Orleans, centred on what are today the modern department of Loire-et-Cher and Indre-et-Cher. The map is nearly centred on the royal town of Blois (the region’s seat), and extends from Orleans, in the east, to Amboise, in the west, and from past Vendôme, in the northwest, down to Bourges, in the southeast. The region’s splendid countryside along the Loire River and its tributaries, and its relatively close proximity to Paris, ensured that it was long a favoured location for the châteaux of kings and the high nobility. During the 16th Century, the region held particular importance, as several of Europe’s finest Renaissance châteaux were built there, while the area was also the scene of high-level political intrigue. Particular points of interest include Blois, where in 1588, only three years before the present map was made, Henry I, the Duke of Guise, and the leader of the Catholic League, was assassinated on the orders of Catherine d’Medici, the Queen Mother; ‘Chambor’, the especially grand château of Chambord (completed 1547); ‘Chenonceau’, the famous château which straddles the River Cher; and Amboise, where Leonardo de Vinci spent his final years. The present map is the first broadly accurate map of the region, based on the pioneering surveys of Jean du Temps (d. 1555), who often known by his Latin name ‘Joannes Temporarius’, a Blois lawyer who was an accomplished mathematician and astronomer. Jean is thought to have been assisted in his surveys by his brother, Adam du Temps, a celebrated military engineer. Du Temps apparently completed his manuscript map of Le Blésois by 1590, which found its way to Maurice Bouguereau, a master-printer based in nearby Tours. Bouguereau had the map engraved by Gabriel Tavernier, a member of the famous family of cartographers and engravers (his initials appear at the tip of the cartouche in the lower-left corner). The quality of the engraving is exceptionally high, with the rivers flowing across the map like tendinous rills, towns and châteaux are expressed pictographically, while the composition is completed by four Mannerist-style cartouches. Bouguereau included the map within his Le Théâtre François, où sont comprises les chartes générales et particulières de la France (Tours, 1594), an exquisite work that has the distinction of being the first national atlas of France. The present map was the authoritative map of Le Blésois region for some decades after it was first issued. Most importantly, it was the source map used by Abraham Ortelius to prepare his map of the region. While Ortelius personally oversaw the completion of the copperplate, it was first issued shortly after his death within an edition of his atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Antwerp, 1598), under the title Blasois. Blesiensis Teritorii hanc tabulam, describebat Ioannes Temporius Blesis, printed on the same sheet as a map of Limousin, Lemouicum Totius et Confinium Provinciarum Quantum Spectant Novissima et Fidis

Orlando Furioso in English Heroical Verse, by John Haringto[n]

London: Richard Field, 1591. First English language edition. An exceptionally rare hand-colored copy, heightened in gold, of the first English translation, with fewer than 10 such examples known. Bound in modern full paneled calf to style. Stamped in gilt and blind, raised bands on the spine, all edges sprinkled red. Folio (pages 276 x 205 mm), printed on thick paper, collated complete (but for one leaf, recto: "An Advertisement to the Reader..." and verso, the illustration to the first canto): [8 leaves, including the title page], 423, [xi, comprised of a Table of Names, Contents & errata, and colophon leaf with verso blank]. Ruled throughout in red ink with vivid contemporary hand coloring throughout, including: the title page, illustrations (45 of 46), head and tail ornaments and the decorative borders and first letters. This copy with "Esquire" tipped in below John Harrington's name (as found in some copies). A magnificent copy, despite lacking one leaf. One of the towering pinnacles of world-literature, in the rare first English translation. Ariosto first published the work (40 cantos) in 1516 in Italy, with the full 46 cantos only appearing in the third edition of 1532. Aristioso's work was and continues to be hugely influential. Indeed, one apocryphal story claims that Queen Elizabeth I banished the translator, John Harrington from Court, pending his completion of this translation. Such luminaries as Shakespeare, Milton, Cervantes, Spenser, Lord Byron, Lope de Vega, Jean de la Fontaine, Sir Walter Scott, Virginia Woolf, Italo Calvino, Jorge Luis Borges, and Salman Rushdie can all claim direct influence from Ariosto (not to mention Vivaldi, Handel, Hayden, ect.). "Orlando Furioso experiments wildly with tradition, stretching the chivalric world to its very limits, undoing its heroes, demolishing their beliefs, mocking their shortcomings... All its characters are uncharacteristically fallible and surprisingly human. And even if these heroes remain firmly embedded in a dazzlingly fantastic and chronologically remote dimension, Ariosto uses them to talk frankly to us, his readers, about our own desires and obsessions, our own failures and flaws, our own humanity." -- Dr. Claudia Rossignoli Pforzheimer 447.

Blum I-70 n°1b. Rare treatise on confessions by presumed witches and sorcerers, usually extracted under torture. Contemporay overlapping vellum (soiled). Final 10 lvs. large portion torn off w. loss of text.

Eli Smith was the organizing genius behind the first great Protestant translation ("Al-kitab al -muqaddas ay kutub al-`ahd al-qadim wa al-`ahd al-jadid ...") which was completed after Smith's death in 1857 under the direction his collaborator Cornelius Van Dyck and published in Beirut in 1865, turning out to superior to all of the earlier Catholic efforts. We don't know what use Smith and his colleagues made of this Catholic forerunner in preparing their translation but we were excited to realize that this early Catholic translation of the Gospels was in the library they amassed.

Brevis Narratio eorum quae in florida Americae provi[n]cia Gallis acciderunt . quae est seconda pars Americae

Theodor de Bry, Frankfurt 1591 - (13 3/8 x 9 1/2 inches). Engraved title, engraved section title, folding engraved map "Florida Americae Provinciae . descriptio", 42 plates after Le Moyne with letterpress titling above and text beneath, 2 engraved illustrations. (Lacking colphon leaf 'H2' at end of plates as usual, occasional neat repairs to inner blank margins, short neatly repaired tear to map). Expertly bound to style in limp vellum, titled in manuscript on spine, red cloth chemise and morocco backed slipcase A fine copy of the first Latin edition of a seminal illustrated work for early North America, with Jacques Le Moyne's spectacular images of the region's Native Americans and a very important map of Florida. With the publication of this work, together with Hariot's Virginia, De Bry launched what would later become known as his Grand Voyages. These first two works are without question the most important of the series both in terms of their contemporary influence and their historical and ethnographic value to modern scholars and collectorss. The text of the Brevis narratio. describes the earliest French settlements of what are now portions of the United States and are here united by De Bry with engravings based on watercolours by a member of the expedition to the New World. To most of the Old World, this work presented the first accurate eyewitness depiction and account of Native Americans. In the mid-1560s two French expeditions led by Jean Ribault and René Goulaine de Laudonnière sought to establish a Hugenot settlement in Florida. Among those accompanying Laudonnière was Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues: born in Dieppe, France in about 1533, he was appointed artist to the expedition which sailed in April 1564. Arguably the first western artist to visit the New World, Le Moyne recorded the scenery of Florida and the lives of the Timucua Indians in great detail, as well as charting the coastline of Florida and much of present-day South Carolina. Unfortunately, the nascent French colony was seen as a threat by the Spanish, the dominant European power in the region, and in September 1565 a force led by Pedro Menendez massacred the French colonists at Fort Caroline. Le Moyne and several others, however, made a miraculous escape. The story of their struggles was not published until 1588, when, at the instigation of Richard Hakluyt, Laudonnière's journal was published in Paris. Later that year, master engraver and publisher Theodor De Bry traveled to London, and met with Le Moyne in an unsuccessful attempt to obtain illustrations of the region to accompany a new edition of Laudonnière's journal. Following Le Moyne's death the following year, De Bry returned to London and purchased the watercolours from his widow. It was on this trip to London that De Bry met Hakluyt, who informed him of the British expeditions to Virginia, shared with him both Hariot's journal and White's watercolours from the expedition and suggested the publication of a series of illustrated voyages to America, beginning with Hariot/White and Laudonnière/Le Moyne. De Bry returned to Frankfurt and in 1590 published the former in Latin, German, French and English; the following year he published the latter in Latin and German, presumably having found that there was only a small market for the other languages. Le Moyne's extraordinary illustrations of the Florida Indians, which appear on forty-two leaves of this work in their first published form, rank with those of John White as the best visual record of American Indians before the 19th century. They show all aspects of Indian life, including settlements, ceremonies, wars, agriculture, hunting, and preparation of food. They also show scenes of the French settlement and their involvement with the Indians. These images were widely copied for centuries, and many later supposedly original illustrations of American Indians are actually copies of Le Moyne's illustrations. A full list of the plates appears in Church. The map, which appeared for the firs [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Engraving from a German Language Edition of Le Moyne's Brevis narratio [ca. 1591 from De Bry's "Grand Voyages to the Americas"]: XLI. Mode of Collecting Gold in Streams Running From the Apalatcy Mountains

1591. Very Good Condition. A single sheet from an early German edition of Le Moyne, likely the first German edition published in 1591, the year after the Latin. Mild foxing and age toning, tear wear removed. "Some considerable distance from the place where we have constructed our fort, rise some high mountains called Apalatcy in the Indian tongue. As can be seen from our map, these mountains give birth to three rivers in whose sand there is much gold, silver and copper. The natives dig trenches near the banks of the rivers so as to catch the sand brought down by the current. The water rapidly fills these up and goes on further. A short time later the Indians remove the sand which has gathered there with hollow reeds and convey it by canoe down the great river which runs into the sea and which we named the river of May. The Spaniards have taken great advantages of the riches coming from these places."
