Vinegia: Presso Altobello Salicato, 1590. 8vo (14.8 cm, 5.8"). [8], 148 ff. First Catholic-approved edition of Franco's Dialogi piacevoli. During the Counter Reformation, most of the "ingrato e faticoso lavoro" (as described by the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani) of censoring texts that the Church found objectionable was carried out anonymously; Dominican priest and prolific editor Giovannini was one of the few whose name was associated with his work. His expurgated productions achieved notable success — this title alone was republished in six other editions by 1609. Author Franco (1515–70) led quite the interesting life first as Pietro Aretino's secretary and then as his nemesis, before being hanged by the Inquisition, though the present radically altered version of his work might suggest otherwise. Ugo Rozza reports that Giovannini chose to omit Franco's eulogy for Erasmus and, further, that the "rewriting was a travesty of Franco's thought: the explicit anti-Roman polemic in the original was => perverted into an apologia for doctrine and for the most orthodox sentiments" ("Italian Literature on the Index," Church, Censorship and Culture in Early Modern Italy). Indeed, in a twist showing how radically confusing to readers and "the record" censorship could be, Giovannini's revisions here were so extensive that he later decided to publish the work under his own name rather than Franco's! Of the two Salicato printings of 1590, this offering is distinguished by a dedication from Giovannini to Annibale Ruccelai instead of the later dedication to Bernardo, Brandimar … [Click Below for Full Description]

PANSA, Mutio
Roma, Giovanni Martinelli, 1590. PRIMA edizione. Josephus Flavius; Hegesippus
Strasburg: Theodosius Rihel, 1590. Rebound in cloth. This book contains the works of Hegesippus and Josephus. The text of these works are in German. Hegesippus lacks all after folio 84, and Josephus lacks all before folio 73. With ink annotations throughout. Saint Hegesippus, c.110 - c.180 AD, was a Christian chronicler of the early Church who may have been a Jewish convert and certainly wrote against heresies of the Gnostics and of Marcion. Hegesippus' works are now entirely lost, save eight passages concerning Church history quoted by Eusebius, who tells us that he wrote Hypomnemata in five books, in the simplest style concerning the tradition of the Apostolic preaching. St. Hegesippus appealed principally to tradition as embodied in the teaching which had been handed down through the succession of bishops, thus providing for Eusebius information about the earliest bishops that otherwise would have been lost. The American theologian Robert M. Price has recently questioned the historical authenticity of Hegesippus, suspecting that 'He-gesippus' may be a garbled version of 'Josephus'. Josephus, 37 - c. 100AD, also known as Yosef Ben Matityahu and after he became a Roman citizen, as Titus Flavius Josephus, was a first-century Jewish historian and apologist of priestly and royal ancestry who survived and recorded the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. His works give an important insight into first-century Judaism. Josephus was an important apologist in the Roman world for the Jewish people and culture, particularly at a time of conflict and tension. He always remained, in his … [Click Below for Full Description]

He was the first to map Christmas Island, which he labelled "Mony" in his map of the East Indies, published in his 1666 Zee-Atlas (Sea Atlas). His Atlas ofte Water-Weereld (Atlas or Water World) has been cited as one of the best maritime atlases of its time. Another of his fine works was the Oost Indien (East Indies) map published in 1680. Pilot books, which contained a large number of navigation charts, were published by many authors, including Goos. He had a notarized agreement with two others, Jacob Lootsman and Hendrick Doncker, to publish pilot books for navigation along the Mediterranean coast, also covering easterly and westerly navigational routes. These were called the Dutch pilot books and remained valid for the period from 1643 to 1680. Goos was also instrumental in publishing the first pilot book for coastlines outside Europe. Adrichem (a.k.a. Adrichom), Christiaan van.
Officina Birckmannica, sumptibus Arnoldi Mylij, [colophon: Coloniae Agrippinae, 1590. Wonderfully detailed study of the Holy Land. Adrichem (1533?85) was a Delft-born priest (a.k.a., Christianus Crucius) who wrote several works on Jerusalem and the Holy Land. His important and influential Theatrum Terrae Sanctae is famous for its engraved maps, but because he used contemporary sources that are now lost, his text is justly sought for its descriptions of Palestine and the antiquities of Jerusalem as these were to be known during the last half of the 16th century. This is universally held to be the first edition, with subsequent editions in 1593, 1600, 1613, 1628, and 1682, and it was translated into several languages, including English. Clouding the bibliographic record however are poorly catalogued copies at Harvard and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek: A copy at Harvard purports to have been printed in 1589, but with no indication of where or by whom. The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek copy is variously reported as having been printed in K?ln in 1582 (Index Aurel.) and 1585 (its OPAC and WorldCat). We believe the Harvard and Bayerische Staatsbibliothek copies to be erroneously catalogued, leading to these questionable dates of production. The volume here begins with an engraved allegorical title-page, has woodcut initials and tailpieces, and bears => 12 folding or double-page engraved maps filled with small details, including sea monsters. The text, printed in roman type in double-column format, contains as lagniappe a chronology from Adam to 1585, the year of the author's deat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Anonym ? Braun, Georg und Hogenberg, Frans:
Ca.1590-1610. The collection of 25 views includes vignettes of:in the Americas: Havana, Potosí (Bolivia) and Cusco; in Europe: Bergen (Norway), Stockholm, Antwerp and Pozzuoli (Italy); in Africa: Ceuta (Iberian enclave in Morocco), Tangiers, Salé (Morocco), Azammour (Morocco), Tunis, Mombasa, Elmina Castle (Ghana), Ascension Island and the island of St. Helena; in Asia: Aden (Yemen), Diu (India), Goa (India), Kozhikode (India), Kannur (India), Ternate (Maluku Islands, Indonesia), Tidore (Maluku Islands, Indonesia), and finally, a view of an Encampment of Tartar Warriors. The views within the roundels were generally predicated on the most authoritative recent sources. Many of the views are based on those published within the first four volumes of Georg Braun (author) & Frans Hogenberg's (engraver) Civitates Orbis Terrarum (6 vols,. 1572 - 1618), the first great 'town book', featuring bird's eye views of cities in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Inspired by Ortelius's ground-breaking world atlas Theatrum Orbis Terraum (1570), which featured all of the world's known regions in detail, this monumental endeavour featured 546 views and maps of cities. Ferrara, Benedetto Mamarello, 1590. Small 8vo. Later half vellum with gilt title-label to spine. Marbbled paper over boards. Woodcut initials and headpieces at beginning. (8), 170, (5) pp. ¶ The very scarce first edition of the first translation into any language of any part of Montaigne's Essays, namely Naselli's monumental first Italian translation, which came to pave the way for later translations of the work, among them Florio's first English from 1603. <br><br>Montaigne's magnum opus was published in 1580, and in 1588, the final edition appeared, constituting the definitive text of the work and that on which all later editions were based. With his seminal work, Montaigne not only created a novel genre of writing, he also founded modern scepticism and the revival of ancient scepticism, and he paved the way for the modern philosophy and thought presented by Bacon, Decartes and Newton. <br>"Unlike anti-intellectuals like Erasmus, Montaigne developed his doubts through reasoning. Unlike his skeptical predecessors who presented mainly a series of reports on the variety of human opinions, Montaigne worked out his complete Pyrrhonism through a sequence of levels of doubt, culminating in some crucial philosophical difficulties... Very bottom of 1628 tp: "In Padoua Per Tietro Paulo Tozzi 1628". A hand written, in old Italian, note at bottom of last page contains the date 1660. So the additional engravings from the 1628 edition likely were added in 1660. Some other contemporary hand written material. .

EICHO (or EISCHO)
This handsome and remarkable early manuscript is an outstanding example of the earliest attempts in Japan to create comprehensive catalogues of books and manuscripts preserved in temple libraries. The first efforts in Japan were catalogues of the actual holdings in individual monastic institutions. Our catalogue, compiled in 1094 by Eicho (1014-95), a priest of Kofukuji in Nara, was very probably the first union catalogue of any type in Japan. It lists all extant Buddhist books found in Japan, using a number of temple catalogues which have not survived (see Kornicki, The Book in Japan, pp. 420-21). The catalogue also includes both Chinese and Korean texts and lists more than 1590 titles of treatises and commentaries. The compilation of this and similar later catalogues helped give order to the vast store of knowledge that Japanese Buddhism had amassed since the Nara period. The compiler, Eicho, was born in Kyoto and was the senior priest of Horyuji Temple in Nara before moving to Kofukuji Temple, one of the strongholds of the Hosso school of Buddhism. He was also lecturer at Yuimae festivals at Kofukuji Temple. Our manuscript, as noted above, is finely written in black and red ink. There is a note on the recto of the first leaf stating that the text in black comes from one manuscript (owned by "Togao zohon" ["a manuscript owned by Togao Kozanji Temple"]) and the text in red (variant readings and additions) comes from another manuscript (owned by "Nanto ihon" ["Nanto," or Kofukuji Temple]). The catalogue is divided into five main parts (sutra, rules, theory and … [Click Below for Full Description]
