Immanuel Tremellius (1510-1580) - Franciscus Junius (1545-1602) - Theodor Beza (1519-1605)
Genf 1590 b. J. de Tournes für A. Wechel Erben, Cl. de Marne u. J. Aubry - 6 Tle in 2 vol in 4to.. Eine der zahlreich. lat. Tremell.-Junius-Beza-Bibelausg. , deren EA (zunächst nur das AT) in Lieferungen 1575-1579 erschien (Stuttg. D 846) u. eine eigenständige lat. Übers. - aus dem Hebr. (v.Tremellius) u. - was die AK betrifft - aus dem Griech. (v.F. Barker (1529-1599, vgl. DNB III 195 ff), was 1580/79 geschah (vgl. DM II 2 p 952 Nr. 9166), u. zw. mit Tremellius lat. NT Version ex sermone Syriaco, die 1569 in Genf (EA) erschien, (vgl. DM II 3 p 1530/31 Nr. 8949 = II 1 p 8/9 Nr. 1421). NT-Text 'ex Graeco a Theod. Beza' (Stuttg. D 913), u. zwar nach d. Beza-NT graece/lat. Genf 1582 (vgl. Stuttg. C 127). Das bedeutet die Text-Kulmination für die lat. Tremellius-Junius-Beza-Bibel, deren Auflagenhöhe - was man schnell einsah - hätte höher veranschlagt werden müssen. Gedanken für eine neue Aufl. waren unvermeidbar u. die sollte dann schließlich - bei Beibehaltung der 'Doppelspitze' - eine erweiterte Neuauflage sein. Herausgabe u. Woodcut title device (with touches of contemp. colour), woodcut foliated initials and woodcut navigational diagram on fol. 144. Contemp. limp vellum with ms. title to spine; lacks ties. Stored in custom-made gilstatmped morocco clamshell case.. First edition of this travelogue by the Venetian state jeweller and merchant, containing much information useful to the contemporary merchant, including rates of exchange, duties, travel routes and distances as well as a detailed account of the pearling grounds in the Arabian Gulf. As only recent research by B. J. Slot (cf. below) has revealed, Balbi was "the first writer to record the place names between al-Qatif and Oman that are still in use today" (UAE: A New Perspective, 74). Thus, the present volume constitutes the earliest printed source for the history of the UAE, Qatar, and Oman. Balbi's "interest in the area lay in the pearls that came from the oyster beds of which the most extensive are those in the waters around al-Bahrayn, those off the Qatar peninsula and especially those in the western waters of Abu Dhabi. Either taking his information first-hand from a local individual or using a navigator's list, Balbi recorded place-names along the coast of modern Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman [...] he is the first to refer to many of these places using the names by which they are known today" (G. King, cf. below). According to Slot, "practically none of the names of places on the coast between Qatar and Ras al Khaima o … [Click Below for Full Description]

ORTELIO, ABRAMO.
Anversa, 1590 circa.

SMYTHE, JOHN
Printed by Richard Johnes, London, 1590. 187 x 130 mm. (7 3/8 x 5 1/8"). 18 p.l., 50 pp. FIRST EDITION. Recent polished calf, covers with blind rules, two brown morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Publisher's device on title page, woodcut headpieces and initials. Cockle 46; STC 22883. Title leaf and final leaf with overall dust soiling and slight fraying at each edge, the four leaves following the title a bit soiled and with flattened creases at upper corner (several other upper and lower corners very slightly defective or also with flattened creases), one leaf with a short closed tear at bottom just reaching into text, but generally a surprisingly good copy internally (especially for a 16th century English book of this sort), with the vast majority of the text clean and fresh, and the retrospective binding essentially unworn. This work is a panegyric upon the English longbow and the rank and file English soldier who had wielded the weapon with devastating effect in such famous 14th century battles as Crécy and Poitiers. It is also a condemnation of many features--virtually all of them new--of the way British military affairs were being conducted during Smythe's time. Although for him there were certain firearms that had stood the test of time, the author has little respect for the newly developed musket, which he thinks is sadly overrated and the weapon of cowards. He also denounces English policy in the Netherlands as ineffectual and misguided, and he criticizes the callous treatment which English officers mete out to their subordinates. His remarks w … [Click Below for Full Description]

LLOYD, LODOWICK
London: George Bishop, and Ralph Nevvberie, 1590. FIRST EDITION. This is a very special (one might almost say sensational) copy of a rare 16th century secular work in English. The author aims to establish a correct chronology for all of history, which he commences with the creation of the world and Adam, explaining in his preface that the Bible is an infallible source of correct chronology, and the Gentiles, such as Greek historian Thucydides, were hopelessly at fault. Although the method would not commend itself to a modern scholar, this survey of the history of the Holy Land, Greece, Rome, Persia, early Medieval Spain and France, and Turkey is an interesting reflection of the knowledge of history which a bookish Elizabethan possessed. Lodowick (or Ludovic) Lloyd (d. ca. 1610) was a Welsh courtier who held the position of sergeant at arms under both Elizabeth I and James I. Lloyd dabbled in poetry and produced historical compilations, the most important of which is "The Pilgrimage of Princes" (1573). His friend John Lane alleged (although this has been questioned) that Lloyd paid for the funeral of Spenser, who died in poverty. A less pleasant allegation is that Lloyd falsified a royal grant to him to make it more favorable, a peccadillo which the queen is conjectured to have overlooked because of her fondness for Lloyd. While we cannot say with certainty that the present copy was ever in the queen's possession, it is obviously a point of great interest to note the close relationship between our author and Elizabeth and, at the same time, to ponder the presence of the roy … [Click Below for Full Description]
