Adrichem (a.k.a. Adrichom), Christiaan van.
[colophon: Coloniae Agrippinae: Officina Birckmannica, sumptibus Arnoldi Mylij, 1590]. Folio (38.5 cm; 15.125"). [6] ff., 286 pp., [15] ff.; [12] fold. or double-page engr. maps. Wonderfully detailed study of the Holy Land. Adrichem (1533–85) was a Delft-born priest (a.k.a., Christianus Crucius) who wrote several works on Jerusalem and the Holy Land. His important and influential Theatrum Terrae Sanctae is famous for its engraved maps, but because he used contemporary sources that are now lost, his text is justly sought for its descriptions of Palestine and the antiquities of Jerusalem as these were to be known during the last half of the 16th century.    This is universally held to be the first edition, with subsequent editions in 1593, 1600, 1613, 1628, and 1682, and it was translated into several languages, including English. Clouding the bibliographic record however are poorly catalogued copies at Harvard and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek: A copy at Harvard purports to have been printed in 1589, but with no indication of where or by whom. The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek copy is variously reported as having been printed in Köln in 1582 (Index Aurel.) and 1585 (its OPAC and WorldCat). We believe the Harvard and Bayerische Staatsbibliothek copies to be erroneously catalogued, leading to these questionable dates of production.    The volume here begins with an engraved allegorical title-page, has woodcut initials and tailpieces, and bears => 12 folding or double-page engraved maps filled with small details, including sea monsters. The text, printed in roman type in double … [Click Below for Full Description]

Abraham ORTELIUS (1528 - 1598)
"This interesting map presents the regions of the earth that were known in classic times within a large oval projection showing the relative size of the now-known world. The map extends into Asia as far east as Sumatra and south to Madagascar and the Mountains of the Moon in Africa. The climate zones are shown as Zona frigida, temperata, and torrida, with the Zona frigida noted as being uninhabitable. An ornate border surrounds the map and incorporates four small insets: Europe, Asia, Africa and America representing the ""modern"" world. From the 1602 German edition of the Parergon. Copperplate, with fine colouring, good conditions." Anversa Antwerpen Shirley #176; Van den Broecke #186. 450 320

This map of Ulterior Abruzzi, occures for the first time in 1590 Additamentum of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Ortelius. It's based on the work by Natale Bonifacio (1538-1592) , on a single sheet, published in Rome in 1587 (Meurer p. 118). This example was part of 1592 Latin edition of Theatrum. Copper engraving, originals colors, in very good condition. Latin text on verso. Jacob MATHAM (Haarlem 1571 - 1631)
1590. "Bulino, 1590 circa, inscritto nel margine inferiore ""Cum privil. Sa. Cæ. Mtis. / HGoltzius Inuentor Jac.Matham excud "". Sa. Cæ. Mtis. / HGoltzius Inuentor Jac.Matham excud "". After a subject by H. Goltzius. Abraham ORTELIUS (1528 - 1598)
(wieder in leicht entstellter Form).

MANUSCRIPT HYMN BOOK ....
1590. The fourth manuscript volume of a set of Benedictine hymn books relative to saints primarily in the Western European church, with emphasis on Germany and Britain. The text incorporates hymns for every portion of a saint's day and mainly in rhyme with short, occasional passages of prose. The rhymes are mediaeval or Renaissance, and perhaps by the actual person whose name is given on the spine of the book. The scribe (whether or not the author) writes in a small beautiful hand, perhaps of the seventeenth century. The author is aware of the famous papal prophecies of Malachi, bishop of Armagh, first published in the 1590s and perhaps written about that time, so the text is probably datable to no earlier than the 17th century - though Malachi's prophecies may have been current in manuscript before that. There is no inclusion of Saint Pius V (1504-1572), a powerful figure and great friend to the Catholics of Spain and Holland amongst others. No musical scores are present. One would naturally think the volumes were originally for use in a Benedictine monastery or abbey. Black morocco over wooden boards, with the remains of clasps, Ms label on the spine, marbled endpapers, all page edges in gilt.. Fine.. 8vo. Book.

Dimensioni 215x280. Engraving, end of the XVI century, signed with "DP" monogram on centre plate. Beautiful work, printed on contemporary laid paper with "lily in the circle with bird" watermark, with full margins, in perfect condition. This magnificent Italian Mannerist engraving has never been listed in any catalogue. From a stylistic point of view, it can be ascribed to Orazio de Sanctis, an artist who basically realized copies after Pompeo Cesura's subjects, also known as Aquilano. Not listed by Bartsch. Dimensioni 215x280.

[China - Beijing: Khanbaliq]. Flemish / Dutch school.
1590. Woodcut ovoid roundel (60 x 75 mm), contemporarily trimmed to just outside neatline and contemporarily mounted to a larger sheet of paper (in excellent condition). One of the earliest printed views of what is today Beijing: an unrecorded bird's eye prospect over 'Cambalu', or Khanbaliq (on the site of modern Beijing), the capital of China during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). The Yuan Dynasty was founded by the legendary Mongol warrior Kublai Khan, who after conquering China proclaimed his new capital at Khanbaliq, although the city would not be completed until 1293. During the succeeding Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Khanbaliq was transformed into what is known as Beijing. Interestingly, as seen in the view, the walled rectangular form of the old city of Beijing is already evident in the design of Khanbaliq. Marco Polo visited Khanbaliq, but his description of its location was vague. For over two centuries thereafter Europeans were confused as to not only the location of "Cambaluc", but they even sometimes confused its identify with "Cathay" (China), thinking that it was the name for the entire country. This confusion was cleared up by the Jesuit Matteo Ricci during his first visit to Beijing in 1598, when he definitively identified Khanbaliq as the precursor to the modern Chinese capital. The present work is one of a series of 26 woodcut roundels of views and maps that were found together as collection. Charming, mysterious and apparently unique, in the absence of any accompanying documentation we are left to make educated guesses about their genesis. By all appearances … [Click Below for Full Description]
