XAVIER, Hieronymous (Jerónimo de EZPELETA Y GOÑI) and Abd al-Sattar (translators) and Ludovicus de DIEU (ed.).
Rahir 473, 486-487; Smitskamp 310-312; Willems 477, 490. First editions of three pioneering works of Persian scholarship prepared for publication by Ludovicus de Dieu (1590-1642) and printed and published by the Elzeviers in Leiden. The first and longest is a life of Christ originally written in Portuguese by an unknown author and translated into Persian by Xavier (1549-1642) and his pupil Abd al-Sattar (active 1597-1615) at the Mogul court. The second work is a life of Saint Peter from a life of the Apostles newly written by Xavier in Persian, perhaps also with the aid of his Persian-speaking students. The third work, written by De Dieu or possibly by Johann Elichmann (ca. 1600-1639?) and edited by De Dieu, is the first printed grammar of the Persian language and served as the principal source for at least two that followed in the next fifty years. At the end it gives the first two chapters of Genesis in Persian translation. With an owner's motto on the title-page. With the title-page of the first work and its conjugate somewhat browned and some slightly browned patches in the third work, but further in very good condition, with only an occasional leaf showing minor marginal blemishes. Spine label worn and tattered, but the binding is otherwise good. Three pioneering works of Persian scholarship, printed in matching style by the Leiden Elzeviers at the height of their careers.

Sylburg, Friedrich
Francofurdi : Apud Andreae Wecheli heredes, Claudium Marnium & ioann. Aubrium,, 1590. Probably originally published as a hardcover the front and rear boards remain as well as a very small part of the spine. The front panel is missing all of the covering while the rear has retained all of its vellum (soiled) covering, the spine is tattered but what is left has retained the vellum and just a little bit of the title. The paper is soft and has accepted soiling and dampstains, there are a number on mainly closed tears on the margins. We have not rebound this book, but left is as found only making a case to hold it. This volume may have been published in Frankfurt under the same imprint as the original two volumes which were published in 1588 version and was probably intended as a third volume of this work. There is a publisher's device depicting Pegasus with initials AW on title the title page. There are additional woodcut decorations through the text - mainly as chapter/part headings. Images available. USPS confirmation used on all domestic shipments. This book weighs nearly 12 pounds so additional postage will be necessary for Priority or International addresses.. No Edition Stated. Disbound. Poor.

1590. Manuscript pen and ink on paper (pot watermark) in neat secretary hand. [9], [1, blank recto with docketing on verso] ff. Folio (12-1/4 x 8 inches). Disbound, first two leaves loose, some light soiling and edgwear. Manuscript pen and ink on paper (pot watermark) in neat secretary hand. [9], [1, blank recto with docketing on verso] ff. Folio (12-1/4 x 8 inches). 16th Century Manuscript List of Lord High Admirals of the British Fleet. A late 16th-century manuscript listing of Admirals and Lord High Admirals of the British fleet from the reigns of Edward II to Elizabeth I. The manuscript comprises 115 entries, each 6-10 lines in length with transcriptions of the letters patent associated with each appointment. It was compiled during the reorganization of the admiralty office by John Hawkins, just 2 years after the English victory over the Spanish Armada. We locate three other copies of this document: two at the British Library in the Harliean collection (6843.30) and the Cottonian manuscripts collection, and a third in the National Maritime Museum (the latter two copies were extended at a later date into the early 17th century). Despite its title, the manuscript opens with the appointments of Thomas de Coleton in 1264 during the reign of Henry III and William de Leiburn in 1286 during the reign of Edward I. The final entry is for Charles Howard, appointed by Elizabeth I in 1585 and who several years later led the English to victory against the Spanish Armada. Provenance: Sir Thomas Phillipps; H.P. Kraus

Rarissima. Etching and engraving, circa 1580/90, without signature. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with "shield with star" watermark, with small margins, perfect conditions. Ercilla had arrived in that country as part of the expedition led by the new Governor García Hurtado de Mendoza. On his return to Spain, Ercilla’s book was published in Madrid in three parts over the course of two decades. THE FIRST EDITION of ALL three parts was published in Madrid, 1590; part one only first published: Madrid, 1569, part two only first published: 1578, and part three only first published: Madrid, 1589. Camillo PROCACCINI
