        L'isole piu famose del Mondo

Venice: Heirs of Simon Galignani, 1590. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Small folio [20.25 x 29.5], (6) (of 12) ff., including engraved title, 201, (1) pp., including 47 copper plate engraved maps in text. Note: bound contemporaneously without 2nd half of index (b signature). Complete with all maps. Bound in contemporary flexible vellum, borders of covers gilt-ruled with arabesque in center, spine gilt with double bands. Head of spine chipped, and some soling to covers. Engraved ex libris of Thomas Heath, Merchant of Exeter and another of the Western Reserve Historical Society, stamped withdrawn. Some soiling in outer margin of title and scattered leaves, faint waterstain in margin of others. Notwithstanding a fresh copy with the maps in excellent impression. Excellent enlarged edition of one of the most beautifully engraved Italian island books of the sixteenth century. L'isole piu famose was the first with maps engraved on copper; and with the Gastaldi edition of Ptolemy's Geografia, 1548, it was among the few geographical works of any kind illustrated with engravings. This edition of Porcacchi contains much more than the first. According to Phillips Atlases it contains 17 maps not in the edition of 1572, including two relating to America: Jamaica and Puerto Rico, here called "Isola di S. Giovanni" for San Juan. Also included are maps of Spagnola and CUBA, Altogether, pages 154 to 184 relate to America. The volume closes with 'Descrizione del Mappamondo' and 'Discorso intorno alla carta da navigare,' pages 193 to 201, illustrated with two splendid Lafrerian-style maps of the world engraved by the Paduan Girolamo Porro. Porro, well-known as a book illustrator, later engraved maps for the first small-format Mercator atlas and for a Ptolemy (both appearing in 1596). According to Shirley, the oval-shaped world map "is a finely-executed reduction of Camocio's large world map of 1567, one of the last in the long line of derivatives from Gastaldi's prototype of 1546."* Adams P-1906; Sabin 64105; Shirley 127-28; see The World Encompassed 86.

        Della Trasporatione Dell' Obelisco vaticano

1590. FONTANA, Domenico. Della Trasportatione dell' Obelisco Vaticano. 108 (i.e., 110), [4] ff. Illustrated with an engraved title-page, an engraved portrait frontispiece of Fontana, and 38 engraved plates continuously foliated, of which three are double-page and folding, mostly by Natale Bonifacio. Folio, 394 x 260 mm, bound in recent Italian half vellum, eighteenth-century Italian pastepaper boards. Rome: The Vatican Press, directed by Domenico Basa, 1590. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition to record one of the most challenging technological feats of the Renaissance: the moving and erecting of the Vatican obelisk in front of St. Peter's Cathedral, Rome. The illustrations are based on drawings by Fontana, engraved by Natale Bonifacio. This thirteenth-century BC Egyptian obelisk was brought to Rome by Caligula in 37 AD where it was installed as the centerpiece of the Gai et Neronis Circus. Relocated by Fontana in 1586 to the Vatican it was the first monumental obelisk raised in the modern period, and it is the only obelisk in Rome that has not toppled since classical Roman times. For centuries a gilt ball rested on top of the obelisk believed to contain the ashes of Julius Caesar. Fontana removed the ancient metal ball, now in a Roman museum, and found only dust inside. Weighing 381 tons and measuring 81 feet in length, the obelisk was lowered onto a carriage and taken 275 yards across an earth-filled causeway to its new position in the piazza in front of St. Peter's. Domenico Fontana (1543-1607) supervised the effort, which required over 900 men, 150 horses, and 47 cranes; it took four and a half months (from 30 April to 10 September, 1586) to move the obelisk. These often-reprinted engravings were executed by Natale Bonifacio after Giovanni Guerra whose preparatory drawings for this work survive (at Paris). In this work Fontana also provides a record of almost the whole of Sixtus V's building projects, including: his suburban Villa Montalto (ff. 37-38), the new Lateran Palace (ff. 59-69), the new wing (a.k.a. the Sistine wing) of the Vatican Library (ff. 82, 97-98), the bringing of the so-called Acqua Felice to the Quirinal (ff. 54-56), as well as other projects outside of Rome, such as those at Loreto and Civitavecchia (fol. 103). Fontana also shows how three other obelisks were excavated, moved, and re-erected, namely the Lateran, Flaminian, and Esquiline obelisks. Slight differences between copies have been noted, but so far no priority has been determined; the present copy has the following characteristics: f. D3 is signed D2 and corrected in contemporary ink manuscript; f. G3v has the paste-on cancel at line "G"; neither of the superfluous engravings of the catafalque of Sixtus V (dated 1591) is present (cf. Fowler catalogue). Binding with soiling, internally fresh and clean, overall, a beautiful copy. Mortimer, Italian 193. Fowler 124. Millard, Italian 40. Rossetti 5098. Schlosser-Magnino 518. Dibner, Moving the Obelisks (New York, 1950), pp. 20-43. Parsons, Engineers and Engineering in the Renaissance (Baltimore, 1939), pp. 155-173.

Late Sixteenth Century Copy Petition of the Mayor and Burgesses of Totnes, Devon

c.1590 ?, 1590. The modern synopsis of the document is . "The Rt Hon Francis Earle of Bedford Lord Lieut of Devon (note in corner that the petition must be with (?) the Lords of the Council, not the Lord Lieut.) Recites Totnes is an ancient Corporation and the Mayor and ex-Mayor are the justices of the Peace within the Borough. That the town stands on the River Dart 7 miles from Dartmouth and from thence a daily passage by water within 4 miles of Torbay a spacious bay able to receive 500 ships and about 14 hrs sail from the coast of Normandy and Brittany and well -known to the French and others by continual trade. Is required to have a magazine of 84 barrells of powder with lead and match at the town charge. The principal strength is 60 trained soldiers 40 musketeers and 20(?) cornets who are summoned to general musters sometimes 6 or 8 miles from the town and that year 20 miles leaving the town naked and indefensible. The petitioners (?) to be allowed to raise a trained band of 100 and have same privilege as Weymouth Plymouth Dartmouth and Barnstaple to choose our officers and muster only within our precincts." On watermarked paper neatly folded and bound into half calf lettered in gilt along the spine with marbled boards. Delivered contemporaneously with the Armada (1588), this petition from the good officers of Totnes reflects the continued threat from across the channel, and the need for towns along the channel coast to arm themselves sufficently. Almost certainly a contemporary copy, it would seem unlikely the original is still extant, not found in the Devon Record Office Online Catalogue. 4to (unfolded 390 x 300mm). Book.

The final of four sixteenth-century editions of this collection of the extensive and varied letters of Tudor Humanist and royal tutor Roger Ascham (1514/15-68), in a highly unusual contemporary English binding.
