Rome: Domenico Basa, 1590. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folio (412 x 275 mm). [1], 108 (i.e. 112), [4] ll., including engraved title-page, additional engraved title-page with portrait of Fontana (by Natale Bonifazio da Sebenico), woodcut initials, 38 etched and engraved illustrations by Natali Bonifazio da Sebenico (including 3 double-page, 1 folding), and 3 diagrams in text. Title-page slightly soiled, fol. 49 supplied, light spotting in places, a few small waterstains to blank margins, old paper repairs to margins of 6 leaves (one just affecting plate mark on fol. 66-2), upper margin of fol. 75-2 trimmed to plate border, marginalia in pencil throughout. Early 19th century half calf over marbled boards, flat spine gilt (extremities worn, corners bumped). Provenance: Angel Maria de Barcia y Pavón (1841-1927), librarian and painter (bookplate to front pastedown with motto"Inter utrumque volitans" and long inscription on flyleaf); Gerardo Olivares James (Cordoba, 1978). Good copy overall, collated complete. -----Dibner, Heralds of Science 174; Norman 812; Brunet II:1329; Cicognara 3736; Fowler 124; Millard Coll. 40; Mortimer, Italian 193; Olschki 16955. - FIRST EDITION, RECORDING AND ILLUSTRATING ONE OF THE GREAT ENGINEERING FEATS OF THE RENAISSANCE. Fontana organized and directed this successful attempt to move the Vatican obelisk. Over 900 men, 150 horses and 47 cranes were required, and the project took four and a half months to complete (from 30 April to 10 September 1586). The plates "are important examples in the development of architectural drawing" (Fowler), and are considered by Olschki to be "remarquables au point de vue artistique autant que technique." Some plates towards the end illustrate the buildings designed by Fontana for Sixtus V. "Besides its great graphic virtues, then, this book by Fontana is an important source for the history of architecture. It is differentiated from contemporary theoretical publications by its dominant technical and pragmatic approach to architectural problems, and specifically by its interest in the organization of the construction site, its vast vision, and its research in architectural typology" (Millard). Very Good.

        Aevi Veteris Typus Geographicus

"This interesting map presents the regions of the earth that were known in classic times within a large oval projection showing the relative size of the now-known world. The map extends into Asia as far east as Sumatra and south to Madagascar and the Mountains of the Moon in Africa. The climate zones are shown as Zona frigida, temperata, and torrida, with the Zona frigida noted as being uninhabitable. An ornate border surrounds the map and incorporates four small insets: Europe, Asia, Africa and America representing the ""modern"" world. From the 1602 German edition of the Parergon. Copperplate, with fine colouring, good conditions." Anversa Antwerpen Shirley #176; Van den Broecke #186. 450 320

        Marte

1590. "Bulino, 1590 circa, inscritto nel margine inferiore ""Cum privil. Sa. Cæ. Mtis. / HGoltzius Inuentor Jac.Matham excud "". Sa. Cæ. Mtis. / HGoltzius Inuentor Jac.Matham excud "". After a subject by H. Goltzius. The oval plate represents Mars, seen from behind, wearing a helmet decorated with a dragon and with a sword; he stands with his legs astride accompanied by a wolf in the clouds; a fortification at left; after a subject by Hendrick Goltzius. This is a companion piece to the print of Venus and Cupid attributed to Jacob Matham (New Hollstein 340), see 1887,0722.208. They are dated around 1590, although they were only published around 1601. Strong impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed close to the borderline, a perfectly repired area of about 8 mm at the left edge, otherwise in excellent condition."         Italia Gallica, sive Gallia Cisalpina, Ex Conatibus Geographicis Abrah. Ortelij

"Nice map of the ancient Gallia Cisalpina - the area of North Italy surrounded by the Alps in the north and west, the Adria in the east, and Luca in the south - made by Ortelius on the basis of ancient knowledge from Livius, Ausonius, Tacitus, Cato, Plinius, Polybius and Cassiodorus. Under the title cartouche, the dedication to the Venetian Lord Francesco Soranzo (1557-1607) One cartouche in middle top with 6 lines of placenames of uncertain location, one cartouche in bottom right corner with two columns of 12 and 11 peoples of uncertain location. Example from the 1592 Latin edition of Parergon. Copper engraving, text in Latin on verso, original colours, in very good condition. The Parergon is Ortelius' atlas of ancient geography. Koeman: ""This atlas of ancient geography must be regarded as a personal work of Ortelius. For this work he did not, as in the Theatrum, copy other people's maps but drew the originals himself... He took many places and regions from the lands of classical civilization to illustrate and clarify their history, a subject very close to his heart... The maps and plates of the Parergon have to be evaluated as the most outstanding engravings depicting the wide-spread interest in classical geography in the 16th century.""" Artist: Goos Abraham ( - 1643 ) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: 1660 1590 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; condition: Upper and lower margin replaced; size in cm : 44,5 x 54,5 - description: chart of the lower Antilles from Puerto Rico to Trinidad - Vita of the artist: "Abraham Goos (1590?1643), was a cartographer and map seller. He has published numerous globes, land and sea maps together with Jodocus Hondius and Johannes Janssonius in Antwerp. From 1666, Pieter Goos, his son, also published a number of well produced atlases. He was the first to map Christmas Island, which he labelled "Mony" in his map of the East Indies, published in his 1666 Zee-Atlas (Sea Atlas). His Atlas ofte Water-Weereld (Atlas or Water World) has been cited as one of the best maritime atlases of its time. Another of his fine works was the Oost Indien (East Indies) map published in 1680. Pilot books, which contained a large number of navigation charts, were published by many authors, including Goos. He had a notarized agreement with two others, Jacob Lootsman and Hendrick Doncker, to publish pilot books for navigation along the Mediterranean coast, also covering easterly and westerly navigational routes. These were called the Dutch pilot books and remained valid for the period from 1643 to 1680. Goos was also instrumental in publishing the first pilot book for coastlines outside Europe.A further improvement over the pilot books in Dutch cartography was the publication of sea atlases covering the whole world. Initiated in 1659 by Doncker, the approach was also adopted by Goos from 1666.One of his larger works is named le grand & nouveau miroir ou flambeau de la mer (1662).In the same year, Goos published "The Lighting Colomne or Sea-Mirrour", which not only contained nautical charts, but also "a brief instruction of the art of navigation".The maps of Goos and Gerard van Kuelen were used exclusively during the eighteenth century until 1740. They were, however, found to have deficiencies such as the location of sandbars, grand banks and islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, with inaccuracies of as much as 44 leagues on the reduced Goos maps.Goos' famous world map titled Atlas ofte Water-Weereld was in two parts, one for each hemisphere. The colourful presentation included the two poles. His maritime maps encompassed not only Europe, Great Britain and Ireland but also the two poles."

'Prijs: € 650,-.

Cambalv. [Likely Antwerp or Amsterdam, circa 1590].

1590. Woodcut ovoid roundel (60 x 75 mm), contemporarily trimmed to just outside neatline and contemporarily mounted to a larger sheet of paper (in excellent condition). One of the earliest printed views of what is today Beijing: an unrecorded bird's eye prospect over 'Cambalu', or Khanbaliq (on the site of modern Beijing), the capital of China during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). The Yuan Dynasty was founded by the legendary Mongol warrior Kublai Khan, who after conquering China proclaimed his new capital at Khanbaliq, although the city would not be completed until 1293. During the succeeding Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Khanbaliq was transformed into what is known as Beijing. Interestingly, as seen in the view, the walled rectangular form of the old city of Beijing is already evident in the design of Khanbaliq. Marco Polo visited Khanbaliq, but his description of its location was vague. For over two centuries thereafter Europeans were confused as to not only the location of "Cambaluc", but they even sometimes confused its identify with "Cathay" (China), thinking that it was the name for the entire country. This confusion was cleared up by the Jesuit Matteo Ricci during his first visit to Beijing in 1598, when he definitively identified Khanbaliq as the precursor to the modern Chinese capital. The present work is one of a series of 26 woodcut roundels of views and maps that were found together as collection. Charming, mysterious and apparently unique, in the absence of any accompanying documentation we are left to make educated guesses about their genesis. By all appearances they seem to be late 16th or early 17th century Flemish or Dutch woodcuts, probably proofs for vignettes to adorn the sides of an unrealized copper-engraved wall map (or maps). Indeed, this period saw the beginnings of the "carte à figures" wall maps that became all the rage during the 17th century, and which occupied an iconic place in the art world of the Low Countries. In the fluid and fast-paced environment of the large European print shops, it was common for artists to experiment with designs for copperplate maps by making woodcut proofs, as carving into wood was much quicker and cheaper. Only if the design was accepted for publication was it engraved into copper (an expensive and demanding process). The views within the roundels were generally predicated on the most authoritative recent sources. Many of the views are based on those published within the first four volumes of Braun & Hogenberg's "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" (6 vols., 1572-1618), the first great "town book", featuring bird's eye views of cities in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Inspired by Ortelius's ground-breaking world atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terraum" (1570), which featured all of the world's known regions in detail, this monumental endeavour featured 546 views and maps of cities. The views from the "Civitates" are imbued with profound historical importance as, in many cases, they are the first accurate and detailed views of many great cities and towns, and were the most popular and influential images of these urban centres available to Europeans during the late 16th and much of the 17th centuries. Other fantastic sources include Jan van Linschoten's "Itinerario" (Amsterdam, 1596), one of the most consequential books ever written, responsible for breaking the Portuguese monopoly on European trade in South and East Asia. Likewise, other views were borrowed from important and pioneering 16th century prints and manuscripts. The unknown maker of the set of roundels to which the present view belongs likely intended for them to serve as proofs for the vignettes adorning the sides of an intended "carte à figures" wall map (or more likely maps). The creation of such woodcut proofs was commonplace, although very few examples survive to this day, as most were destroyed once their incidental use had transpired. In any event, these woodcut roundels are a fascinating insight into the operations of a large cartographic workshop in the late 16th century.

Pavia, Joseph Mayus Solivetus [c1667]. [4] p. Roman letter. 3 works bound in 1 volume, folio. Near contemporary paper boards. Three rare imprints of the statutes of the Montes Pietatis at Pavia, a charitable lending establishment and precursor of the modern pawnshop, which initially collected the necessary capital by preaching and gifts, charging only a modest interest. Bernardino of Feltre (1439-94), a Franciscan zealot, preached passionately against the usurious practices of Jewish money lenders, and urged social reform. When Duke Gian Galeazzo Sforza saw the unheaval caused by his sermons, he forbade further preaching in 1480. In order to strike directly at the Jews, Bernardino inspired Christian money lending establishments, run by clergy and laymen, where the poor could borrow at a low rate of interest. Donations towards them were pronounced as a step to salvation. He set up a Mons at Pavia in 1493, and 17 others which were later sanctioned by the Duke of Milan. The charitable pawnshops offered a significant safeguard against impoverishment of the small peasant in the months before the new crop, and for the craftsman and small trader during a slack period. The title woodcut decorating both Viano imprints is a portrait of Bernardino of Feltre (who died at Pavia), carrying in his right hand the sign of the pawnshop (a green hillock composed of 3 mounds with a cross) and holding in his left hand a scroll with the legend “curam illius habe”. These early documents are an important source for the historian of pawnbroking. An unobtrusive old ownership stamp in blank title margin of first work. I: EDIT 16 38536(2 copies only); none of the 3 imprints are held by the British Library; not in Kress, nor Goldsmiths’ Catalogue. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
