Jost Amman (June 13, 1539 - March 17, 1591) was a Swiss artist, celebrated chiefly for his woodcuts, done mainly for book illustrations. Amman was born in Zurich, the son of a professor of Classics and Logic. He was himself well-educated. Little of his personal history is known beyond the fact that he moved to Nuremberg in 1560, where he continued to reside until his death in March 1591. He worked initially with Virgil Solis, then a leading producer of book illustrations. Justinian.
Lyon, (lion moucheté), 1589. (42) SS., 2222 Spp. Gebonden in halfleer, 303+182 pag. Mooi exemplaar. C1589.STCN: noemt alleen de hoofdtekst, zonder bijlagen. De commissie bestond uit W.H. Teding van Berkhout, H.B. van Halteren, C.W. Visscher, I.F.

Rarissima edizione. First published in 1589, this striking map comes from Barentsz's "Descriptio Maris Mediterranei, per tabula hydographics & geographicas, . . .", published by Janssonius in Amsterdam in 1654. This is a rare variant edition. The atlas includes re-issues of Barentsz's 10 maps (first included in "Caertboeck vande Middelandtsche Zee", 1595) of the Mediterranean, with Jansson having completely changed the title and reworked the decorative embellishments, removing many of the great images originally added by Barentsz. Copperplate, original outline colour, in very good conditions. Rare edition, without text on verso.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca (Seneca the Younger)
Antwerp: Martinum Nutium , 1589 This is an extremely rare early copy of Seneca's tragedies, which include Medea and Oedipus. It is in poor condition - the front board is missing and the back board is detached. 25% of the spine is missing. The pages are browned and there is crinkling to the early and later pages due to the absence of the protective boards. There is some worm damage to final leaves, not affecting the text and someone has practised decorative writing - again on the final leaves and not affecting the text. It measures 11.5 x 8 cm and has 431 pages plus an index. We can find no reference to a 1589 copy, although Seneca's plays were very popular in that period.

ORTELIUS Abraham
Philippo Gallaeo, Antwerp, 1589. Contemporary (possibly the original) vellum overlaid onto early vellum; some marginal soiling and browning, index page partially torn, all maps clean. Contemporary ownership signatures on title. First Latin edition under this title, complete with the map plates engraved by Galle, and text printed by Plantin just weeks before his death. The previous Latin edition was first published in 1570 under the title Theatrum orbis terrarum, with Latin poetry rather than prose by Hugo Flavoliusd. Like the Theatrum this version was immensely popular and was translated in prose form into Dutch (1577), French (1579), Italian (1593), English (1603), and German (1604). The miniature version of Ortelius's atlas was mostly used by travelers, students and all those for whom the folio would be inconvenient. Copies were eagerly sought after and usually received considerable wear. The atlas was printed through the eighteenth century. Ortelius (1527-1598) was the father of the modern atlas. His Theatrum orbis terrarium was the world's first regularly produced atlas. Combining maps with comprehensive text, the Theatrum sets the standard for future atlases.

CICERO, Marcus Tullius (106 BC - 43 BC).
Lugduni: Joan. Pillehotte, 1589. Lugduni:: Joan. Pillehotte, 1589., 1589. Two parts in one. 12mo. 779, [1]; 236, [1] pp. Waterstains to upper section (visible pp. 1-24). Original full vellum, manuscript spine title. Title applied (ink?) top bottom edge. Very good. Early pocket edition of Cicero's philosophical works edited by the noted Alexander Scott. Scott, Master of Arts and "Juris utriusque Doctor," was born at Kinninmonth. . . . Yielding to the penal laws, he went to France. In 1580 he edited at Lyons the Letters of Cicero. This was followed by various editions of the Apparatus Latinae elocutionis. . . . In 1593 appeared the Universa Grammatica Graeca. Its success was great, and it passed through many editions in succession, completely superseding the institutes of Nicholas Clenard. Scott finally edited the collected works of Cicero, published in 8 vols. by J. Pillehotte in 1606. About the year 1589 Scott married the sister of Jean Pillehotte, who had amassed a large fortune. We next hear of him as Director of the Schools of Carpentras in 1594. Between 1604 and 1608 Scott presided at the Town Council of Carpentras as principal judge of the town. Nothing could stop his literary activity, and in 1601 he brought out the Vocabularium utriusque Juris, and in 1606 edited the complete works of Cujas. - William Forbes-Leith, Pre-reformation Scholars in Scotland in the XVIth Century: Their Writings and Their Public Services, Glasgow: MacLehose, 1915, pp. 89, 90.
