Journée des barricades, 12 May 1588. TASSO, Torquato.
Il Re Torrismondo tragedia.Venice, Fabio & Agostino Zoppini, 1588. 12mo or long 24mo in 12s (13.5×7 cm). With the Zoppinis' woodcut device on the title-page, a woodcut headpiece, several woodcut tailpieces, several woodcut decorated initials (3 series), and cast fleurons. Gold- and blind-tooled overlapping sheepskin (ca. 1900?). 58, [1], [1 blank] ll. One of the earliest editions of a tragic play in Italian verse by Torquato Tasso (1544-1595), published only a year after the first edition of 1587. Torrismondo follows the classical tradition, influenced by Sophocles and Seneca, and tells the story of Alvida, princess of Norway, who is forced to marry Torrismondo, King of the Goths. Tasso had made his name with his epic poem Gerusalemme liberata, published in 1580, and the present work also proved extremely popular.Although the endleaf facing the title-page is signed "Francisco: Drake" and the title-page initialled "FD", both in a contemporary hand, the signature does not closely resemble the known signatures of Sir Francis Drake (ca. 1540-1596), so the owner may have been a namesake. With an occasional running head shaved and the outer fold of the last quire reinforced and an occasional leaf slightly dirty. Otherwise in very good condition. An early edition of a play very popular in its day. ICCU CNCE 48032 (8 copies); WorldCat (2 copies); USTC (9 copies); cf. Adams T249 (1587/88 Ferrara ed. with matching collation).

It is the first commentary by the patriarch of Alexandria, Cyril of Alexandria (ca. 376-444), whose "precision, accuracy, and skill ... as a theologian has often been remarked" (The Oxford Dictionary of Saints). In particular he dwells on the Old Testament prototypes of the Church" (Florovsky). It is published by the female printer Sybille de la Porte (1540-1608), widow of the printer Henry de Gabiano. With 17th-century owner's inscription on title-page. LXXVI.Venice, Giovanni II & Giovanni Paolo Giolito, 1588. Small 8vo (15 x 9.5 cm). With a woodcut Jesuit IHS device on the title-page. Contemporary(?) sheepskin parchment. 62 pp. Probably the second edition (following the edition published at Rome in the same year), in the original Italian, of an important eye-witness account of a voyage and spectacular shipwreck, written by the Jesuit Pedro Luis Martínez (1542-1598). On 10 April 1585 he set off from Lisbon for the East Indies in the ship Saint Jacques. It struck a rock in August 1585 near Cape of Good Hope, leading to a dramatic shipwreck. Martínez survived to write his account, most notably describing the shipwreck in detail, but also sites he visited and people he saw along the coasts of Africa, Arabia and India. When he reached Goa, he sent his account in the form of a letter dated 9 December 1586 to the Reverend Preposito General della Compagnia di Giesù, that is, the head of the Jesuit order in Rome, called the Superior General in English. Martínez was to become the first Bishop of Japan in 1596. With the corner of one leaf damaged and restored (at an early date), slightly affecting the last letters of a few lines on one page, and with some small smudges on the last text page. Otherwise in very good condition. Cordier, Japonica, col. 108; Nuovo & Coppens, I Giolito e la stampa 186; Palau 154573; USTC 841214 (8 copies).

It was written by Heinrich Kramer (ca. 1430-1505), also known by his Latin name Institoris, a Dominican priest and papal inquisitor in Austria, Alsace, Bohemia, Moravia and German-speaking Swtzerland. The first edition appeared at Speyer in 1487 and the book went through about 40 Latin editions to 1698 plus translations into several languages, fuelling the violent, unjust and cruel persecution of supposed witches in Europe and America for more than two centuries. Kramer himself boasted in 1491 that he had presided over the identification, trial and execution of two hundred witches, but that is a tiny fraction of those executed under his influence. This 1588 printing features folding maps and over 400 exquisite woodcut Bible scenes.

Kramer wrote the book in the wake of his own failed witch trails in Innsbruck, where the local Bishop rejected his arguments and condemned his methods. In his book he commands an arsenal of rhetorical techniques, legal precedents, scriptural justification and alleged examples to convince the world that witchcraft was not only real but an imminent danger in society and to justify torture, burning at the stake and other actions. Although witch trials were nothing new, they had mostly been local matters resulting in mild punishments. Kramer's book, together with several other influences, institutionalized these trials on a much larger scale and with punishment by d … [Click Below for Full Description]

Quarto (210 x 146 mm.), allegorical title-page with a view of Bologna in the background, full page portrait of the dedicatee Cardinal Francesco Barberini, a second engraved title-page with the emblem of the Accademia after Agostino Carracci, 31 full page portraits, woodcut head-pieces and tail-pieces, woodcut vignette. A worm track in the first three pages, a few spots, a paper flaw on page E1; overall a very good copy in contemporary vellum with manuscript title on spine. The first edition of this superbly engraved book celebrating with portraits and imprese the most important members of the Accademia dei Gelati, a major Italian intellectual circle of the early modern period.Based in Bologna, the Accademia was established in 1588 by Melchiorre Zoppio and the brothers Gessi as an elite circle to foster intellectual activities. It boasted among its members popes, noblemen and letterati, and, it has been suggested, even a few artists, as secondary members, including Agostino Carracci and Giuseppe Maria Mitelli. The Accademia showcased the talent of its associates through printed collections of verse, severely assessed by an inside ?censorship' (Perini, ?L'Accademia', 115).Dedicated to Cardinal Francesco Barberini, Memorie is a handsome example of the fashionable 17th-century genre of illustrated biographies, inspired by an interest in physiognomy and portraiture as an insight into a person's character (Testa, ?Italian Academies', 201). The work provides indeed a pantheon of deceased and living academicians. Deceased members were celebrated with a portrait and an impresa, … [Click Below for Full Description]
