[AUTOGRAPH REPORT, SIGNED, DESCRIBING MARTIN DE HERRERA'S SERVICE TO THE CROWN, HIS ADVENTURES, AND THE MALICE OF THE VICEROY OF NEW SPAIN, ALVARO MANRIQUE DE ZUNIGA]

[Mexico], 1588. Folio. Folded sheets, stitched. Top 1 1/2 inches of each leaf lacking due to insect damage and damp. Minor soiling. Else about very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. An interesting contemporary manuscript account written by Captain Martin de Herrera describing the misdeeds and abuses of the Viceroy of New Spain, don Alvaro Manrique de Zuniga, Marquis de Villamanrique, as well as Herrera's exploits in the New World. The DICCIONARIO UNIVERSAL DE HISTORIA DE GEOGRAFIA states: "This Viceroy, brother of the Duke of Bejar and a member of one of the most illustrious families of Spain, took up office on 17th October, 1585, and resigned in February 1590. He had bitter contentions with the Dominican, Franciscan and Augustinian Provincials over the question of compliance with the King's instructions with regard to the secularisation of the curacies which those orders administered....In 1587 Sir Francis Drake seized the ship Santa Ana off the coast of California, bearing merchandise from China and Japan. Drake had travelled the Pacific previously, causing damage to the provinces of Jalisco and Sinaloa. The Viceroy had ordered the ships at Acapulco to be in readiness and nominated Dr. Palacios as head of the expedition, but although these ships pursued the English, they were unable to find them. "Grave questions arose between the Viceroy and the Audiencia at Guadalajara on judicial matters, which led to a rising of the troops on both sides. The news of these differences was probably exaggerated, but caused much uneasiness at the Court of Spain, which feared civil war, for which reason they hastened to remove the Marquis de Villamanrique from the supreme command, and appointed as Inspector (Visitador) the Bishop of Puebla, Don Diego Romano, who treated the Marques very harshly, ordering his property to be seized, even to the wearing apparel of the Marquesa; but although the Council for the Indies ordered the embargo to be removed, the Marquis died in Madrid without having recovered his property." This report, which gives the other version of the matter, is methodically divided into 101 paragraphs and describes in minute detail all his trespasses: the indignities to which he subjected the high ecclesiastical and other officials; his high-handed attitude in dismissing certain members of the Treasury, replacing competent administrators with his own servants; and a full catalogue of his iniquities. The writer states that he is not prompted by malice, but rather by an honest desire to serve his king and country's interests in reporting these incidents. The Governor began his campaign of annoyance by issuing orders before he had been properly sworn in as Viceroy. He then proceeded to dismiss as many officials as he pleased, in defiance of the King's express wishes, and appointed his own friends in the vacated positions. He ordered that Don Diego Caballero, a priest who reported certain irregularities to the Visitador, should be arrested and sent to Acapulco for banishment to Peru; he subsequently rescinded the order, and, to the indignation of the people, had the priest conveyed back to San Juan de Ulloa in a wooden cage, in which he passed through the Indian encampments and infected areas "with no other object in view than that this honored and esteemed priest should die under such conditions." Herrera was a particular bete-noir of the Viceroy, having been one of the principal informants against him. He states how he called on the Viceroy and told him he had been "a respected resident of that city for twenty- five years, and had in every way served His Majesty (Philip II), helping to guard the city of Mexico with his arms and horses..."; and how he was at the port of San Juan de Ulloa when the corsair Juan Aquines [Hawkins] took it; and how he was amongst those who defended the port of Acapulco "against the corsair, Francisco Draque [Drake] when he sailed the Pacific." He relates how his ancestor, Captain Juan de Herrera, had died in the service of the King, at Castelnovo; how his uncle, Francisco de Herrera, had arrested Francis I of France, and how his father's three brothers had died one day in the service of the Emperor (Charles V); and how he had been amongst the conquerors of the Philippines. When he attempted to obtain permission to travel, the Viceroy ordered him to be arrested, his house searched, and many of his papers seized. Herrera escaped, however, leaving behind his wife and children, and tried to board one of the ships of the Spanish fleet. Arriving at Tlaxcala, however, he sought sanctuary at the Franciscan monastery of Atiliqueza, where the Viceroy's men ran him to ground, with warrants to seize him whether he happened to be in a monastery or a church. He was therefore obliged to flee to a place where the Viceroy had no authority. This lengthy report also includes a most interesting relation of the vicissitudes of Martin de Herrera and his brother, Diego, and their efforts to enlist the sympathy of the Consejo de Indias. A fascinating contemporary accounting of 16th-century Spanish America.

        Phytognomonica.octo libris contenta.

Orazio Salviano, Naples 1588 - Folio (300 x 208 mm). [1-2] 3-320, [22] pp. Signatures: (A-2R)4, (A-C)4. Colophon and imprimatur on 2R4v. Woodcut title-border with the lynx emblem of the Accademia dei Lincei; author's portrait on verso title, 32 text woodcuts. 18th century paste-paper boards, spine lettered in ink (hinges and extremities rubbed, dampstain at top, corners bumped). Internally only little browned (final two leaves of index stronger), professional repairs to small worming at gutter, small hole in 2A1 and 2B2 (affecting two letters in 2A1r), faint dampstain to inner margin of first leaves. Includes index, which is often absent. Provenance: Krown & Spellman. A clean and virtually unspotted copy in very good condition. ---- Norman 1724; Adams P1938; Hunt 158; Nissen BBI 463; Mortimer (Italian) 399; Wellcome 5203; Thorndike VI: pp. 422-3. - First edition, first issue with the title dated 1588 (many others with 1589), and with the index, which is lacking in more than half the copies existing. "Porta expanded upon his theory of the correspondence between external form and internal character in this treatise on plant physiognomy. Porta claimed that plant physiognomy was the theoretical side of agriculture; however, his doctrine of signatures - that the exterior form of a plant indicates its medicinal qualities - was more akin to sympathetic magic than to science and led to some bizarre claims, e.g., that herbs growing in rock clefts will help break up bladder stones, and that plants resembling flies and butterflies promote fecundity. Porta's doctrine of signatures was opposed by believers in astrological medicine, and the two factions often quarelled. There are two issues of this edition, the second with a title-page dated 1589. Some copies have additional signatures A-C4 (C4 blank), containing the index." (Norman, 1724). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Disputatio Astronomica De Eclipsibus

Marburg: typis Pauli Egenolphi, 1588. Soft cover. Very Good. 4to [19.5 x 15.2 cm]. (4) ff., woodcut title vignette, headpieces, and initial. Unbound, sewing covered by paper strip. Minor browning, marginal dampstaining, minor tear at top margin not affecting text. Very good. Very rare record of an August 1588 public disputatio at the University of Marburg concerning the nature of eclipses. Directed by Rudolph Goclenius the Elder (1547-1628), who held chairs at the university in philosophy, logic, metaphysics and ethics, the discussion was recorded by the thesis student Gerhard Palthenius according to the scholastic practice of the time. Palthenius dedicates the printing to his esteemed teachers at Marburg and then summarizes the discussion in 64 numbered points about the physical nature and terminology of both solar and lunar eclipses, all of which appear to be in line with the most current scientific opinions on the topic. The disputatio as a form had long been paired with the lectio, or lecture, in scholastic education, and was still very much in use during the rise of the new natural philosophy: A famous (albeit much more refined) example is Orazio Grassi's (1583-1654) 1619 De tribus cometis anni MDCXVIII disputatio astronomica, which would spark the comet controversy that led to Galileo's Il Saggiatore (1624). The final page of the present document lists twelve other theses being defended at Marburg in the fields of grammar, arithmetic, geometry, ethics, economy, and history. Rudolph Goclenius (Rudolf Gockel), a prominent figure at Marburg for many years, is known today primarily for his significant contributions to the fields of logic and ontology and for apparently coining the term "psychology," which first appears in his Lexicon Philosophicum (1590). He is not to be confused with his son, Rudolph Goclenius the Younger (1572-1621), who became a well-know physician and professor at Marburg. OCLC locate no U.S. copies of this title and only 2 global copies, those at the Universitätsbibliothek Tübingen and the Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen. * VD16 ZV 19149; Hamel 184.

[8], 186, [18] pp. Illustrated with the Giunta printing device with initial "F" on title-page and, in a different form, on the colophon. Plus the full-page woodcut portrait of Vasari from the Vite facing page 1. 8vo., 217 x150 mm, bound in contemporary Italian limp vellum, title in brown ink on spine. In Firenze: Appresso Filippo Giunti, 1588. |~||~||~||~| First Edition. Giorgio Vasari, considered to be the first art historian and often referred to as the "father of art history," wrote the Ragionamenti between 1557 and 1560. A completed first draft was brought to Rome by Vasari in ca. 1560, where it was read by Annibale Caro, Michelangelo, Duke Cosimo de' Medici, Vincenzo Borghini, and Jacopo Guidi, among others. The work is written in dialogue form taking place over a period of three days. The two characters were Vasari himself and the young Francesco de' Medici, to whom the book is dedicated. Although the core text revolves around the painted commissions Vasari executed in the Palazzo Vecchio, the Ragionamenti can also be viewed as a supplement to his Le Vite de' Piu Eccellenti Pittori, Scultori, E Architettori. The Ragionamenti was circulated among friends and artists in Rome over a period of several years, and although Vasari even promised its eventual publication in his autobiography appearing in the Vite of 1568, it remained unpublished at his death in 1574. It was left to his nephew Giorgio Vasari il Giovane to see it through the press and publish it posthumously in 1588. Vasari not only discusses the allegorical meanings of his compositions in the Palazzo Vecchio, but he served as a guide and Cicerone through the Palazzo, elucidating for both the Prince and the reader, the artistry behind his compositions and the iconographic schema of the works in general. In so doing Vasari created an ingenious dynamic between the artist, the spectator and the art. While most of the dialogue between Vasari and Francesco de' Medici centers on the paintings in the Palazzo Vecchio, the Ragionamenti has a great deal to say regarding the relationship between artist and patron in late Renaissance Italy, and Vasari, known as an artist, architect and biographer, is also revealed to be art critic, aesthetician and art historian as well. PROVENANCE: Angel Lorenzo de Giudici (1716-1804) man of letters from Arezzo. signed in brown ink at the foot of the title-page "Di Angel Lor de Giudici." He is cited in Atti Dell' Accademica Aretina di Senze, Lettere ed Arte, printed in Arezzo, 1838. Cicognara 225. Schlosser Magnino 331-332. Camerini 148. Moreni II, 432. Brunet, V, 1097.

        Le diverse et artificiose machine.

for the author, Paris 1588 - Exceptionally fine copy, with distinguished provenance, of one of the most important books on the science and technology of machines in the renaissance, and one of the most famous illustrated books of the sixteenth century – a tour de force of book design. This is a splendid copy in contemporary French gilt vellum, ruled in red, and entirely untouched. We are not aware of a similar copy in quality since the Norman-Freilich copy (sold Sotheby’s 2001, $291,750). Provenance: Francoise d'Espinay de Bretagne, first wife of Henri de Schomberg, comte de Nanteuil (1604 gift inscription on front free endpaper); Princes of Liechtenstein (stamp on title); Otto Schäfer (sold Sotheby’s 1995, £38,900). A fundamental book in the history both of technology and of book design, and "one of the most elegantly produced of all technological treatises" (Norman). The scientific import of Ramelli’s work resides in his demonstration of "the unlimited possibilities of machines. For example, the dozens of water-powered pumps and mills shown in his treatise clearly demonstrated that non-muscular power could be substituted for horse- or human-power in any mechanical task requiring continuous or repetitive application of force, and the portrayal of over twenty types of water pump . destroyed the notion that there were necessary limits t the configuration or arrangement of a machine" (ibid.) About half of the engravings depict hydraulic devices, the rest showing military machines as well as fountains, bridges, cranes, foundry equipment, etc., and a smattering of innovative devices such as the famous ‘reading wheel’ or the bouquet with artificial singing birds. The influence of the illustrations was far- reaching and they were copied in a number of technical books during the next two centuries."The plates in Ramelli’s treatise are artistically as well as technologically superb, the bilingual text beautifully printed, and both plates and text surrounded by handsome borders of typographic ornaments. The reasons for this sumptuousness were twofold: First, Ramelli had dedicated the book to his patron Henri m; and second, he had previously had several designs stolen from him by a trusted associate (probably Ambroise Bachot, later engineer to Henri IV), who published them in corrupt and mutilated form and claimed them as his own. As a result of this experience Ramelli planned his treatise as a particularly lavish work that would be difficult to counterfeit, and produced and published it from his own house where he could maintain absolute control over the project. He succeeded in preventing any pirated editions and made the book so expensiveand difficult to produce that it was reprinted only once, in a German edition of 1620, before the twentieth century." (Norman).Dibner 173; Norman 1777; Mortimer French 452; Wellcome 5323; Adams R52; Cockle 788. Folio (354 x 228 mm). Ruled in red throughout. Roman (French) and italic (Italian) types. Engraved title within architectural frame by Leonard Gaultier, each leaf of text printed within a border of typographical fleurons, engraved portrait of Ramelli by Gaultier on title-page verso, 194 engravings (174 full-page, 20 full-sheet) numbered I-CXCV (CXLVIII and CXLIX combined on a single engraving), three signed with the cipher 'JG' (CL-CLII). (Four leaves comprising n1 [f.97], o1 [f.105, mis-signed n1], o8 [f.112] and n8 [f.104] misbound, very short minor tears to i4 and T2, tiny marginal chips to i8 and V3, small marginal chip repaired on P2, occasional light spotting and browning.) Contemporary French limp vellum, covers framed with gilt double fillet enclosing gilt centre ornament of laurel leaf tools, flat gilt spine, lettered at head of spine in ink manuscript, gilt edges (small stain on upper cover of binding, spine lightly soiled, lacking ties), modern green cloth slipcase. Gammel håndkolorering. I nyere ramme med passepartout. God kolorering. - Fra fjerde bind af Braun & Hogenbergs "Civitates Orbis Terrarum".. Georg Braun og Frans Hogenbergs berømte værk "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" kom ialt til at bestå af 6 bind, udsendt i årene 1572-1617 i Köln. Her findes mere end 500 prospekter af - eller kort over - (især) europæiske byer.

A Tholose (Toulouse): Par Pierre Jagourt, 1588. Fine. Par Pierre Jagourt, A Tholose (Toulouse) 1588, In-12 (8x14cm), 662pp., relié. - New collective edition, rare, eight pieces of the author, after the first full collective italics in 1580. Print. Binding open vintage parchment. Smooth back mute. traces laces. A lack in mind. The tail cap was missing and was awkwardly filled by a new piece of parchment. Some gaps in borders. Clear wetting trace footer throughout the book. Garnier (1545-1590) is undoubtedly the first great French tragedian. Most of his subjects are drawn from antiquity, but his last two pieces are firstly a Christian tragedy and the other a tragedy inspired by Ariosto. Friend of the poets of the Pleiade celebrating openly (tragedies in the preliminary parts contain poems Ronsart and Belleau) it was less appreciated by the court. His sense of tragedy is inherited from Seneca and Euripides where the tragic sense depends less on action than the sovereign word.

      - In folio; cartone recente; cc. (4). F.
