Paris, Jean Richer, 1587.. SECOND EDITION 1587 (first was 1585), French text. 12mo, approximately 135 x 80 mm, 5¼ x 3 inches, printer's pictorial device on title page, a few woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials, leaves: (8), 291, (1), numbered on rectos only, bound in full crushed olive green morocco, triple ruled gilt borders to covers with tiny gilt flower at corners, gilt rules to spine with small gilt lozenge in compartments, gilt titled red morocco label, all edges gilt, ornate gilt decoration to inner dentelles (turn ins), deep pink endpapers. Spine sunned to a tan colour, otherwise binding in very good state, small armorial bookplate of John Chamier on front pastedown, 2 small pale ink marks on title page, some upper margins trimmed not affecting running title, a few pages lightly age-browned, tiny worm track to lower margin from fo. 93-119, small dark spot to fo. 140, no loss of text. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy. Details about the life of Le Sieur de Cholieres (1509?-1592?) has been the subject of considerable research with little outcome. His family name may have been Dagoneau or Dagonneau and he may have been a lawyer at the parliament of Grenoble. He was certainly an erudite "gentilhomme" and poet who devoted himself to the study of science, literature and art. The discussions he embarks on in Les Apres-Disnees, which are full of information on the customs and manners of his day, are a vehicle for his humour and non-conformism which he claims show him to be a modest pupil of the great Rabelais. In this volume he tackles 9 subjects: 1. Brunet, Volume I, 1849; Adams, Books Printed in Europe 1501-1600, Volume I, No. 1463 (edition of 1588); BM Catalogue of French Books to 1600, page 107. The book tells the story of Felix the Great, son of King Falangriz of Great Britain and Queen Clarinta, and his exploits and quest for glory and salvation of the soul and body. Much of its pages are devoted to the struggles of the Paladins against the Moors and Turks. Our Italian translation by Camillo Camilli (who signs the Dedication) consists of 2 books, the second starting on leaf 138v. It seems that no more was published. There are 3 copies located by EDIT16 in Italy and 1 copy located by Copac in the British Library and all have only the first 2 books. The running title on the rectos throughout is "prima parte" so it seems that Camilli had intended to produce another volume. Not in Brunet, Adams, nor Harvard, 16th Century Italian Books.         Ecce Homo

Etching with engraving, 1587, signed and dated on plate. After a painting by Correggio. Example of the first state of two, with the dedication to Enrico Gaetano. A fine impression, printed with tone, on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the paltemark, in very good condition. Lettered with dedication to Cardinal Enrico Gaetano on parapet within image, and below image with a line of Latin and production detail: 'Ant. Correg.inuen: Parmae in Aedibus Pratorum', dated at center: '1587' and signed at right: 'Aug. Car. Bon. inc: excu.' After Antonio Correggio's painting made around 1520, now in the National Gallery, London. The painting had been in Parma until the 17th century, therefore Bohn in TIB suggests that together with Bartsch XVII.87.95 it is evidence of Agostino Carracci's visit there. According to Michael Bury in 2001, Cardinal Enrico Gaetano, to whom the print was dedicated, was the papal legate to Bologna an described in 1593 as one of the cardinals who were putting together collections of prints. In the Ecce Homo, Agostino reversed the image but remained close to the original composition. It is one of the three engravings of the years 1586-87 that carry assertions of Agostino's control of the plates (the other two are Madonna of St Jerome and the Cordons of St Francis), suggesting he was trying to establish a print business in Bologna on a more formal basis than before. Rare work by Agostino. Bartsch XVIII.49.20; TIB 1995, 3901.150.S1; Bury 2001, no. 155; De Grazia, Le Stampe dei Carracci, p.150, n.143 I/II. Dimensioni 268x374.         Typus Orbis Terrarum

Ortelius' third and last world map is dated 1587 under the author's signature. The earlier border of clouds has been replaced by a more intricate and elegant lattice of strapwork and swag. The oval world map used previously has been updated in two major respects. South America now assumes the more correct shape anticipated in state 3 of Ortelius' second plate, and the Solomon Isles are marked for the first time. However, Ortelius shows the northern mainland's of Asia and America as separated by a narrow strait, 200 years prior to Captain Cook's thorough surveys of the area. California is properly shown as a peninsula. However, the map reflects the misconception held at the time that Tierra del Fuego was the northern tip of a massive southern continent. Indicative of its paramount importance, a copy of Ortelius' atlas is thought to have accompanied Sir Francis Drake on his circumnavigation of the world. Great copy in full original colour of this important map of the World. R. W. Shirley, "The Mapping of the world", 158; Van der Krogt 3, 0001; M. Van den Broecke "Ortelius Atlas Maps" (2011), n. 3.       1587. "A nice view taken from the rare ""Ruinarum vari prospectus ruriumq. Aliquot delinationes series"". Hendrick van Cleve or Cliven III, son and pupil of William van Cleve, moved to Italy in the second half of the XVI century; besides a painting depicting a view of Rome (1550), he realized a considerable amount of drawing which he afterwards used as preparatory for the engravings he realized in Antwerp and published by Philip Galle in 1587. The views, whose main subject is Rome but there are also other European cities, bear the inscription "Henri. Cliven. inven."" or ""Henri Cliven pingebat"" on lower part, which testify their origin, but not necessarily the fact that he realized them. Engraving, good impression on contemporary laid pape, very good conditions." 242 178
