Pollio, Lucas
Johann Steinmann, Leipzig 1585 - 8vo, pp. [xxxii], 394 (recte 396), [4]. Title-page printed in red and black within a woodcut border. Contemporary pigskin over partially bevelled wooden boards, boards decorated in blind with a portrait roll enclosing a central block depicting paying figures (different on each board), twin clasp mounts to board edges, edges red, remains of vellum tabs to fore-edge. Browned and spotted, a few marginal paper flaws. Somewhat darkened overall, spine rather rubbed and a bit worn at ends, some light wear to corners, no flyleaves. An early printing of these posthumously published sermons, which had first appeared at Breslau (now Wroc?aw) in 1584, followed by two Leipzig editions of 1585 - the other being an entirely different setting, numbered on one side of the leaf only, under the imprint of Zacharias Bärwald. Lucas Pollio (1536-1583), sometimes called 'the Elder' to distinguish him from another Lutheran preacher who may have been his grandson, was a native of Breslau and had studied Greek under Melanchthon in Wittenberg, later briefly studying in Leipzig before returning to Wroc?aw and becoming pastor of St Mary Magdalene, site of the first Lutheran services in the city. OBICINI, Tommaso;
?In April 1622, he renounced the office of Custos and proposed opening a College for the study of Arabic at the Convent of St. Peter … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

CONESTAGGIO Girolamo Franchi di
1585. First edition. 4to. Contemporary vellum, some browing here and there with toward the end of the volume some worming mostly marginal but touching the text (hardly any loss) of about 20ll. 10, 264ll. Genova, Rare first edition of this work which Brunet calls ?ouvrage curieux, qui a beaucoup de succès dans le temps? Written to celebrate the unification of the crowns of Portugal and Castille, this comprehensive history of the Portuguese empire includes a chronology of Portuguese kings since 1090. The first book mentions Columbus and the Portuguese settlement in Brazil and also reports on Portuguese activities in Africa and India. In addition, the role of the Jesuits is discussed at length. It also discusses China, Japan, France and the Low Countries. Brunet believes that the name of Conestaggio was a pseudonym and that the work was written by Juan de Silva, condé de Portalegre, who had accompanied Dom Sebastian to Africa as Spanish Ambassador. STENGEL, Georg.
, . . Landwehr, German emblem books, 555; Praz, p. 504; cf. The John Carter Brown Library online. Reissue of the enlarged second edition of an emblem book by the Jesuit Georg Stengel (1585-1651). The first (1634) and second (1635) editions were published at Munich by Nicolas Henricus. Every chapter is headed by a finely engraved emblem in an egg-shaped form, with 4 small additional views in the corners. "In this most curious of emblem books, the author takes the egg as inspiration for meditations on Easter and the Eucharist. One hundred egg-shaped emblems explore the meaning of the egg within a Catholic theological perspective" (John Carter Brown Library). The range of meanings assigned to the egg through the ages provides a veritable paradise for the ardent iconologist. Great attention is shown for detail in both the emblems and the corner views, all engraved with excellent care. Each emblem is followed by extensive edifying readings. Some of the emblems show indigenous Americans (using them as inspiration for the following meditations) or relate directly to America.With some large water stains on the first three leaves and marginal water stains throughout, some occasional foxing. Otherwise in good condition.

4°, blanco omslag, (39) pag. C2037 Knuttel 3453.

BREDERO, Gerbrand Adriaensz.
STCN 850697484; Unger I, D. Hartgersz. edition of the collected works of one of the most famous Dutch authors of the 17th-century, the poet and playwright Gerbrand Adriaensz Bredero (1585-1618), well remembered for his farcical plays, poems and songs. The subject of his plays was less the vicissitudes of protagonists and a study of their character than the vivid depiction of daily life in Amsterdam in the early 17th century. His work is very important for the study of Amsterdam dialect.Slightly damp stained, last leaf (with blank verso) cut out and mounted to a fly-leaf, otherwise still in good condition. Worn spine and one hinge cracked and nearly detached.

Passavanti, Jacopo
Appresso Bartolommeo Sermartelli, 1585ISBN|B00L47TBQC. Appresso Bartolommeo Sermartelli. LEATHER BOUND. B00L47TBQC In Italian. 1585 Appresso Bartolommeo Sermartelli (Florence, Italy), 3 1/2 x 6 inches tall three-quarter leather bound over red marbled paper covered boards, gilt-lettered red leather label to spine, floral endpapers, [16], 385, [7] pp. Minor rubbing, soiling and edgewear to covers. Moderate worming to margin of title page with 3/8-inch chip to lower margin, and a tiny amount to the first page of the introduction by editor Lionardo Salviati (1539-1589). Otherwise, apart from minor occasional soiling or foxing, a very good, firmly (and handsomely) bound copy of this scarce early Salviati edition of 'The Miror of True Penitence.' Just three years before this volume was published, Salviati - who helped to reassert the influence of Florence over the development of Italian - issued his expurgated edition of Boccaccio's Decameron. Like Pietro Bembo, Salviati favored imitation of fourteenth century authors, blaming the decline of Italian on excessive Latin influence. Jacopo Passavanti (circa 1302-1357) was a Florentine Dominican friar, writer and architect. He was a popular preacher. 'The Miror of True Penitence' is the only surviving work which is certainly from his hand, based on his homilies from Lent of 1354, and is considered both informative and moralizing. ??~WWW~ . Very Good. 1585ISBN|B00L47TBQC.

Ephraem, Syrus, St.
In Agro Patavino [i.e., Torreglia]: In Sacra Eremo S[anctae] Mariae de Ruah, 1585. 8vo (15.7 cm, 6.325"). [12], 116 ff.; illus. St. Ephrem of Edessa (ca. 306–73), hymnographer and Doctor of the Church, is notable as being one of the few early deacons to enjoy a wide reputation as a preacher and theologian. He defended the orthodoxy of Nicea against the Arians, and his hymns were foundational for hymnography in both East and West. He wrote only in Syriac, but was translated into Greek early on, and it is from a Greek translation of his Sermons that the present work was done. The thrust of those present is pastoral and devotional; apparently, they were especially chosen to provide=> inspirational reading for hermits, addressing ascetics, devotion to the saints and to the Passion of Christ, and the problem of heresy. Some were originally written specifically for monks.    Br. Ambrosius was prior of the Camaldolese hermitage of St. Mary of Ruah, outside Padua. His translation was first printed by Guido Mercator in Paris in 1505. This 1585 edition was published by the translator's own religious house — its mark (here as colophon) shows St. Romuald, the founder of the order, holding a model hermitage.    A couple of woodcut initials and a type-ornament vignette modestly adorn this work of patristic devotion in a rare and charming 16th-century monastic house edition. => Searches of WorldCat. COPAC, and Edit 16 find only two books printed at this monastery.    Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard (sans indicia).         Edit 16 CNCT 18133 & 1892. [MAURITS VAN NASSAU].
STCN (1 copy); Typ. Batava 6418 (same copy); not in Google Books; Picarta; WorldCat. Second copy located of the first and only edition of a proclamation issued by Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, and the State Council of the United Dutch Provinces on 29 November 1585, forbidding maritime travel to and commerce with Spain, Portugal and other lands under the Spanish crown. Maurits issued it at a crucial turning point in the Dutch war of independence from Spain. Antwerp, the cultural and economic capital of the Low Countries had fallen to the Spanish siege in August 1585 and many on both sides expected that would be the end of the Dutch revolt. But the Dutch controlled the waterways and were able to cut off Spain's trade and therefore the sources of finance for the war, finally taking the upper hand in the revolt.An early owner has drawn a band across the blank shield in the title-page. With remnants from a later binding. Very slightly browned and with some minor marginal tears, cuts, etc., but still in good condition. Extremely rare proclamation.
