RASTELL, William
(LAW) RASTELL, William. A COLLECTION IN ENGLISH, OF THE STATUTES NOWE IN FORCE, CONTINUED FROM THE BEGINNING OF MAGNA CHARTA, MADE IN THE 9 YEERE OF THE REIGNS OF KING H.3 VNTILL...THE 23 YEERE OF THE REIGNE OF OUR GRACIOUS QUEENE ELIZABETH. London: Christopher Barker, 1583. Folio. Later full calf. (33), 265, (1), 266-297, 297-559, (18) leaves. First edition, thus. William Rastell was an early compiler of English legal statutes, editing A Collection of All the Statutes, which was published in 1557. The present work is significantly enlarged, adding the laws added since Rastell's death and adding two indices. It was frequently reprinted throughout the early eighteenth century but the first edition is rare. OCLC cites only one copy of it. In addition to being both a judge and attorney, Rastell was the nephew of Sir Thomas More and did much to save More's writings. In later life, he converted to Catholicism and fled to Europe. This copy lacks the first and last leaves (both blanks?) and the title leaf has been pasted on to a blank leaf, with significant loss along the foot and gutter of the page. Barker's dated colophon appears on the verso of leaf 559, before the general table. His mark also is printed, unsigned and undated, on the verso of leaf D9 after the initial table. Rastalls' law books were popular in early Virginia and Jefferson owned a copy of this work in his library at Monticello. The later full-calf binding is most attractive.

Firenze, Giorgio Marescotti, 1583. "With Andreas Caesalpino a new era begins... His book on plants was the first attempt to classify plants in a systematic manner based on a comparative study of forms" (PMM). He was the first to describe in accurate detail the parts of flowers, seeds and fruits, and based his analytic classification on these parts. He was perhaps the first to wrestle in print with the concept of species; and his solution, like those of many modern botanists, was based on the capacity of a group to reproduce its kind" … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edition originale. WAGHENAER, Lucas Jansz.
Amsterdam: (1583). 330 x 520 mm., dark impression, light soiling and staining to margins, paper fault to lower right margin, some small holes filled with old paper at centrefold, only visible from the verso, otherwise a very good example.; Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer (c.1553-1606) was one of many Dutchmen who sailed the trading waters from Holland as far afield as Spain and the Baltic Sea. He retired from the sea in 1579 and began production of charts using the knowledge he had gained. Part one of the 'Spieghel der Zeevaerdt' was published to critical acclaim in 1583, the second part followed in 1585. They are the first modern published sea charts and were engraved by the van Deutecom brothers. They were both functional and of great artistic merit. This rare chart is in its second state with the both Dutch and Latin titles and depicts the coast of England from St. Ives round to Plymouth in Cornwall and displays the Sorlinges or Scilly Islands. This first printed series of sea-charts was first printed in 1584 and for the following edition in 1585 a Latin title was added to the plate. Koeman (1967-70) IV p. 474 no. 20a.
