HUGO, Herman.
De Backer & Sommervogel IV, col. 513; Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) III, Bolswert 145-192; Landwehr, Emblem books Low Countries 345; Porteman, Emblematic exhibitions, p. 17, fig. 6; Praz, pp. 143 ff.; STCV 6826501 (4 copies). First edition, in the original Latin, of the most popular spiritual love emblem book ever published, illustrated with the beautiful emblematic designs of the great baroque artist Boetius Adamsz. van Bolswert (ca. 1580-1633). Herman Hugo (1588-1629), a Jesuit priest who lived in Antwerp and elsewhere in the southern Low Countries, made the genre popular throughout Europe with his Pia desideria and especially its beautiful emblems by Van Bolswert. Its emblems, mixing heart-warming scenes of tenderness with dire warnings to sinners, even inspired the Protestant Jan Luyken's Jesus en de Ziel. Though the use of the Latin language would have demanded a fairly well-educated reader, it was still the language of the Catholic Church and the book clearly spoke to the common people. For this reason, the emblems depict people (often represented by putti) in daily life. With early owner's inscriptions on title-page mostly erased and a 17th-century interlinear inscription between the first lines of the dedication, and a 20th-century bookplate of Jos van der Steen. With a small rust hole in 1 leaf and an occasional, usually marginal brown stain, but still in very good condition. A seminal emblematic work mixing heart-warming scenes with dire warnings, both from daily life.

Many of the passages in Sepher HaChassidim are homiletic and exegetic, explaining the philosophical or mystical meanings of Biblical verses and Talmudic sayings. Nonetheless, it is primarily a masterwork of ethical instruction, enjoining how to resist temptation and avoid sin; how to dress, speak, pray and work; how to choose a wife and select companions; how to harmonise the necessities of existence with the requirements of religious life; how to choose a righteous teacher, and many other subjects. Sewn into early grey wrappers with manuscript titling to upper: "Primus Chorus Tenor Missa binae Tenor Primi Chori à 8." 14 pp. including one ruled page without notation. Notated ink on hand-ruled staves. & & This work is unrecorded in both Grove and RISM. . Mel, a Flemish composer, was "mainly active in Italy. He was of a landed family whose fortunes were closely linked to the Duchy of Lorraine... After Spain annexed Portugal in 1580 Mel went to Rome, where his name appears in that year on a subscription list for two new bells for the Flemish church, S Maria in Campo Santo. Whether or not he studied composition with Palestrina as Baini claimed, his first published works indicate that he was well acquainted with Palestrina's style. The title-pages and dedications of his printed books show that in addition to his continued allegiance to Lorraine... He enjoyed the friendship and patronage of the Valignani, the Henrici and Cardinal Gabriel Paleotto... Mel was well educated and a prolific composer whose aristocratic lineage and connections seem to have ensured him at least a modest fame. His works have not been edited, and have therefore not received the study they deserve. His sacred pieces show him to have been a craftsman, well trained in Dutch counterpoint and a diligent imitator of the Palestrinian style." Patricia Ann Myers in Grove online

E. Vignon & Bernhardus Petrus 1580-1590, Geneva, Leiden and Bremen - Together 3 works in one volume. 8vo. (ORBIS): 174 pp., 2 blank ff. (COMMENTARIORUM): 8 ff., 208 pp. (JEHOVA VIDEX): 2 parts in one volume. 12 ff., 34 ff. The Orbis Christiani Status gives a strictly contemporary account of the rebellion of the Duc de Guise against royal authority, his assassination in 1588, and the eventual triumph of Henri IV. As per Hugh M. Richmond's 'Shakespeare's Navarre': "When Henri IV won hi … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]
