MILITARY BOOKS - 16TH CENTURY ENGLISH). GATES, GEOFFREY
London: Henry Middleton for John Harison, 1579. FIRST EDITION. 188 x 131 mm. (7 3/8 x 5 1/8"). 63 pp. FIRST EDITION. Modern dark brown calf in the style of the period, covers with gilt oval ornament at center, raised bands, two brown morocco labels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Title within woodcut border, coat of arms of Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford on page facing dedication to him, two large historiated woodcut initials. Printed in black letter. Cockle 26; STC 11683; ESTC S102948. Text washed and pressed (title page a little gray as a consequence), first three quires with faint dampstain to gutter, last quire a little browned, other, more trivial, imperfections, but still quite an acceptable copy of a book welcomed in any condition, with the text being clean and still reasonably fresh, and the retrospective binding unworn. In what DNB calls "one of the most remarkable works of its type," soldier Geoffrey Gates (fl. 1566-80) makes an impassioned defense of his profession, of men charged with protecting the sanctity "not only of the seat of justice, but also of the cow and plough, of the bed and cradle, yea of the altar and of the sovereign state." An ardent Calvinist, Gates saw military service as a fight to "execute the high justice of God upon the earth." He had fought for the Dutch in the early years of their Eighty Year War for independence from Spain, and was a great admirer of the Dutch leader, William I, Prince of Orange, who is praised here as a defender of the Protestant faith. Our author reserves special contempt for merchants, lawyers, and rich men who … [Click Below for Full Description]

1579. Antwerp, Ortelius, [1579]. Original hand-coloured engraving. Plate Size: 49.3 cm x 35.3 cm. Sheet Size: 53.1 cm x 42 cm. Original map. Very good condition, with some signs of browning to the outer margins only. Slight creasing to the top right coner of map. Professionally repaired tear to lower centre fold, barely noticeable given the quality of the workmanship. Latin text on reverse. [Broecke 14ab.2; Koeman III, 9529+9610:31; Wolff, America S. 95; Lowery 65.]. A pair of stunning maps from the late 16th Century Theatrum Orbis Terrarum showing the northwest Pacific coast of Mexico and the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean. All these regions were first explored and settled by the Spanish in the 1490s and still under Madrid's control when Ortelius produced his renowned cartographic work. Among the settlements shown on the Mexican map are Culiacan and the Spanish settlement of Villa S. Michaelis with its cathedral clearly marked. Reliefs are depicted pictorially, with mountains and rivers identified and a large forest/grove also shown. A large, but narrow, island lies just off the coast. Large decorative cartouche with Ortelius's characteristic ornamental straps lies of the coast with explanatory annotations in Latin text. Smaller title cartouche in the top right corner of map also. The map below illustrates the Greater Antilles, including the Cayman Magnus and the Caymanes, Cuba, 'Aity, sive Spaniola' (Hispaniola), Jamaica, the Bahamas, 'St. Jois Insula' (St. Johns), Virgin Islands and the Barbados Islands, all in fine detail. Havana is clearly identified alon … [Click Below for Full Description]

A title cartouche is in the lower left corner. Villages and towns are shown as miniature views. This is the 2nd plate of Ortelius's 'Asia Nova Descriptio'. It has the lower case 'farfana' and the town 'Ara' above Aden has disappeared. Inacurracies can be stated the farther east one goes, with the Philippines poorly defined, Korea nonexistant, and Japan looking very strange.

[ANTWERP].
First Dutch and French editions of a pamphlet announcing a "religious treaty" to reduce or eliminate friction between the Protestants and Catholics in the city of Antwerp. It was contracted between the Archduke Mathias, the Prince of Orange William the Silent and the State Council, and accepted by the Antwerp magistrate on 12 June 1579. Plantin delivered 162 copies of this pamphlet (both Dutch and French) to the States General on 15 June 1579. Another 200 copies were delivered to the military authorities of Antwerp. The treaty was proclaimed earlier than was expected due to an incident between Catholics and Protestants on 28 May 1579 that involved Archduke Mathias. With the owner's inscription of the Belgian painter Arnold Frans Van den Eynde (1793-1885, known for his views of Mechelen, on the paste-down, and some underscoring and annotations in the first work. Ortelius, Abraham. (1527 - 1598).
A large, but narrow, island lies just off the coast.Large decorative cartouche with Ortelius's characteristic ornamental straps lies of the coast with explanatory annotations in Latin text. Smaller title cartouche in the top right corner of map also. The map below illustrates the Greater Antilles, including the Cayman Magnus and the Caymanes, Cuba, ‚Aity, sive Spaniola' (Hispaniola), Jamaica, the Bahamas, ‚St. Jois Insula' (St. Johns), Virgin Islands and the Barbados Islands, all in fine detail. Havana is clearly identified along with other … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gerard DE JODE (1509-1591).
[Antwerp, circa -1583], 1579. Copper engraved map sheet with full contemporary colour and silver highlights, with no text on verso, recently remounted upon a larger sheet of paper with added French lines in gilt and blue (Very Good, excellent original colour, map trimmed to neatline as it was once bound in a contemporary atlas factice, sporadic minor restoring to the colour mostly in margins), map proper: 37 x 45,5 cm (14.6 x 17.9 inches). An exceedingly rare map by Gerard de Jode, printed only as a broadside after the publication of his atlas of 1578. This map of Artois is one of the Gerard de Jode’s rarest maps. It embraces the area between Kortrijk in Belgium and Calais and Arras in France. Our example is coloured with stunning original colours and is heightened with silver lines. The map is based on the draft by Jacques de Surhon (died 1557) a Flemish cartographer and silversmith. This de Jode’s map was never published in an atlas and has been for centuries referred to as lost ("Quoique nous ayons perdu toute trace des exemplaires de de Jode / Although we thought we have lost all the traces of the examples [of the map of Artois] by de Jode, - E. Rocart, Un cartographe du XVIe siècle, Jacques de Surhon, 1929, p. 522). The Story Behind the Map - In 1579, Abraham Ortelius published in his atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum his version of the map of Artois, based on the draft by Jacques de Surhon (died 1557). He wrongly attributed it to Jacques’s son or brother Jean de Surhon (Joannes Surhonius) as the latter was selling the maps as his own, which Ortelius only discovered in 158 … [Click Below for Full Description]
