It owes its origin to the suggestion of Staunford that it would be a good idea if lawyers would write treatises on the other titles of the abridgments similar to his study of the Title "Prerogative." Staunford illustrated his meaning by showing how the Title "Brief" might be treated. Theloall chose this title, and wrote a treatise on it for his own use. BALBI, Gasparo.
First edition of an important travelogue by the Venetian state jeweller and gem merchant Gasparo Balbi, detailing his nine-year voyage from Venice to the Far East between 1579 and 1588, and a work of special historical interest for its eyewitness information about the Arabian peninsula in this early period. In the Viaggio dell'Indie Orientali Balbi was "the first writer to record the place names between al-Qatif and Oman that are still in use today" (King, p. 74). His "interest in the area lay in the pearls that came from the oyster beds of which the most extensive are those in the waters around al-Bahrayn, those off the Qatar peninsula and especially those in the western waters of Abu Dhabi. Either taking his information first-hand from a local individual or using a navigator's list, Balbi recorded place-names along the coast of modern Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman" (King, p. 248). According to B. J. Slot, "practically none of the names of places on the coast between Qatar and Ras al Khaima occur in other sources before the end of the eighteenth century" (p. 36). The present work is also of the greatest significance for including "the first European record of the Bani Yas tribe" (UAE Yearbook 2006, p. 20), the largest and most important tribe of the Arabian Peninsula, which produced both the Al Nahyan and the Al Maktoum dynasties, today's ruling families of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.Balbi travelled extensively in the Arabian Peninsula in search of precious stones. He knew "the waters off the Abu Dhabi coast as the Sea of Qatar and mentions the followi … [Click Below for Full Description]

FREITAG, Arnoldus and Marcus GHEERAERTS the elder (artist and etcher).
[8], 251, [1 blank] pp.Rare re-issue (with additions) of the first and only early edition of Arnoldus Freitag's Latin prose emblem book, Mythologia ethica, hoc est moralis philosophiae per fabulas brutis attributas traditae amoenissimum viridarium, printed by Plantin (Antwerp, 1579), but with new preliminaries that include a new engraved title-page, illustrated with about 38 animals, and three additional fables, each with an emblematic engraving. The present issue therefore has 128 emblematic Aesop fables, each filling a double-page spread with the title, the fable itself and the briefer explanation of the moral message (linking the fable and illustration) on the left page and the motto, illustration and a relevant quotation from the Bible (Old and New Testament) on the right page.So Aesop's pagan fables were adapted to present and promote Christian morality. The series became very popular and influential, and was copied and imitated many times, influencing great artists like Franz Cleyn, Wenceslaus Hollar and Francis Barlow. Philipp Galle bought the copper plates for Gheeraerts's 107 illustrations in 1571 and probably executed the 18 new etchings that appeared with them in his 1578 Esbatement moral des animaux, French emblematic versions of 125 Aesop fables, edited by Pierre Heyns (1537-1598). The Latin translation/adaptation of this book by Arnoldus Freitag translated and adapted Heyns's 1578 French text, which which Plantin printed and published at Antwerp in 1579, with the same 125 plates.Slightly browned, and some marginal soiling on the first and last leaves a small t … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHOPPER, Hartman
Nicolaus Bassaeus, Francof. ad Moenum [Frankfurt], 1579. Third edition of the first Latin translation of *Reynard the Fox*, previously published in 1567 and 1574. 24mo. 496, [20]pp. 57 woodcuts by Jobst Amman. Utilitarian later (probably early 20th Century) cloth with morocco spine label gilt. Trimmed but with reasonable margins. A small worm hole on the first few leaves, a very good or better copy. The Reynard cycle of stories (satirical allegories rather than stories for children), in which the trickster fox outwits his enemies, often the greedy and dull-witted wolf, arose in the 10th and 11th Centuries and were popular throughout medieval Europe in several languages, most notably in the French versions. Several more modern translations derive from Schopper's Latin version. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Sin, Yong-gae
1579. [Ehon] Sin, Yong-gae. SOK SAMGANG HAENGSILTO. Preface from 1514 but presumed to be a 1579 printing. Although a later impression, Korean volumes of this age and importance are seldom found. The Sok Samgang Haengsilto ('Continued Illustrated Exemplars of the Three Bonds') was published as a continuation or 'updated version' of the Samgang Haengsilto, a book originally compiled in 1432 by Kye Sun [Sun Sŏl 偰循] and others under the order of King Sejong. The Samgang Haengsilto was a morals handbook which dealt with Confucian ideas on filial piety, loyalty, and chastity. As Samgang Haengsilto scholar Young Kyun Oh notes, 'Under the orders of King Chung-jong, Sin Yong-gae and others collected new stories and published them as a separate edition in 1514. These included thirty-six stories of filial sons (three Chinese and thirty-three Korean), five about loyal subjects (three Chinese and two Korean), and twenty-six concerning devoted women (eight Chinese and eighteen Korean) ... Compared to earlier editions, there are a far larger number of Korean stories compared to Chinese, and the proportion of the text devoted to 'loyal subjects' is much smaller than in the earlier text' ('Printing the Samgang haengsil-to 三綱行實圖 (Illustrated Guide to the Three Relationships), a Premodern Korean Moral Primer', 2011).Oh also notes that the stories in the Sok Samgang Haengsilto text were 'updated' to include more recent and well-known figures, and that the book was published twice, once during the reign of Chungjong and again in 1579 during the reign of King Sonjo. The 1579 edition … [Click Below for Full Description]

Coornhert (1522-1590). The 17 finely engraved illustrations show episodes from the 12 books of the poem. Two bear the signature of the engraver Dirck Volkertsz. Coornhert, the latter, depicting Van der Noot's conversation with Theude, dated 1571. This shows that Van der Noot was already working on his Olympia epics by that tim … [Click Below for Full Description]

THELOALL, Simon.
London, Richard Tottell, 1579. 8vo, ff. [viii], 424; woodcut criblé initial, running titles; outer margin of quire G trimmed a little shorter, some water-staining mostly in the last quires, occasional light soiling; a good copy, bearing extensive ink marginalia throughout (a little trimmed) in law French in a neat strictly contemporary single chancery hand, bound in seventeenth-century calf, sides filleted in blind with bind-stamped palmette cornerpieces, panelled spine; covers reattached, spine partly perished, still holding, corners worn, surface scratches and scuffs; contemporary ownership inscription on title (?Robbart), purchase date on the verso of the last leaf: 25th May 1580; preserved in a cloth box.First edition, scarce, of Theloall's early work on writs, a remarkable copy, intensively annotated by a single contemporary owner evidently versed in the Common Law.Theloall's Digest established itself as the accepted Register of Writs, effectively filling a crucial vacuum: 'The common law had grown up round the royal writs. They formed the ground plan upon which its builders worked; and it is for this reason that the learning of writs was the first thing taught to students of the law. Seeing that the choice of a wrong or inappropriate writ meant loss of the action, this learning continued to be of the utmost importance to the practitioner all through his career' (Holdsworth, A history of English law, II, p. 431); yet no official register of writs appears to have been produced in the mediaeval era. In the absence of official collections of Chancery forms, within the leg … [Click Below for Full Description]

BROGNOLO BERNARDINO / ORTELIUS ABRAHAM
1579. Incisione in rame, fascinosa coloritura d'epoca, mm 345x465. Bel cartiglio decorato in alto a sinistra. Esemplare splendido. Van den Broecke 120

MILITARY BOOKS - 16TH CENTURY ENGLISH). GATES, GEOFFREY
London: Henry Middleton for John Harison, 1579. FIRST EDITION. 188 x 131 mm. (7 3/8 x 5 1/8"). 63 pp. FIRST EDITION. Modern dark brown calf in the style of the period, covers with gilt oval ornament at center, raised bands, two brown morocco labels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Title within woodcut border, coat of arms of Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford on page facing dedication to him, two large historiated woodcut initials. Printed in black letter. Cockle 26; STC 11683; ESTC S102948. Text washed and pressed (title page a little gray as a consequence), first three quires with faint dampstain to gutter, last quire a little browned, other, more trivial, imperfections, but still quite an acceptable copy of a book welcomed in any condition, with the text being clean and still reasonably fresh, and the retrospective binding unworn. In what DNB calls "one of the most remarkable works of its type," soldier Geoffrey Gates (fl. 1566-80) makes an impassioned defense of his profession, of men charged with protecting the sanctity "not only of the seat of justice, but also of the cow and plough, of the bed and cradle, yea of the altar and of the sovereign state." An ardent Calvinist, Gates saw military service as a fight to "execute the high justice of God upon the earth." He had fought for the Dutch in the early years of their Eighty Year War for independence from Spain, and was a great admirer of the Dutch leader, William I, Prince of Orange, who is praised here as a defender of the Protestant faith. Our author reserves special contempt for merchants, lawyers, and rich men who … [Click Below for Full Description]
