Paris Claude Barbin, 1571. Stampa e carta fresche. Dorso quasi totalmente mancante e cop. sciolta così come i due primi fogli bianchi. Legatura lenta. Collazionato. POPE SAINT PIUS V (1504-1572)
[Antonio Blado], Rome, 1571. Four page Papal Order suppressing the "Humiliati" - a religious order of obscure origins that had become wayward and unmanageable by the 16th century. The order was probably founded in the 12th century, and changed rules of life rather frequently. By the 16th century, they had become corrupt and rather wealthy. St. Charles Borromeo (1538-1584) was charged by Pope Pius V to address the abuses, and as a result was the object of an assassination attempt by a member of the order in 1569. Pope Pius V decided then to completely suppress the order, and this pamphlet, dated 7 February, 1570 (though published the following year), is the official act of suppression. Borromeo is mentioned several times in this document, as is the assassination attempt, and indeed this incident was one of the main causes of the suppression of the Order. Pope Clement XIV cited Pope Saint Pius V's suppression of the Humiliati in his own document, Dominus ac Redemptor, which ordered the suppression of the Jesuit Order in 1773. There were two printings of the order issued - one, a smaller, four page pamphlet, and a very large broadside, with the exact same text, and printed on one side only. The four page pamphlet is the item being offered here. A copy of this decree resides in the British Library as well as the National Library in Rome. The Roman copy is the smaller issue in two leaves; the British Library entry does not specify the size or number of pages of its copy. Measures 32 x 22cm, 4 pages. Loose as issued. Abul Hasan Ali ibn abi Rijal, al-Shaibani (Albohazen Hall).
Basel, Sebastian Henricpetri, (March 1571). Folio (250 x 310 mm). (28), 586, (2) pp. Contemporary blindstamped full calf; spine rebacked. Second Henricpetri edition of this elaborate system of astrology, edited by Antonius Stupa. Abul Hasan Ali ibn abi Rijal (also known as Haly or Hali, and by the Latinized versions of his name, Haly Albohazen and Haly Abenragel), probably born in Cordoba, flourished in Tunis from ca 1020 to 1040, where he served as court astrologer to Prince Al-Muizz Ibn Badis. His "Distinguished Book on Horoscopes from the Constellations" enjoyed a great reputation, and he was celebrated as "Ptolemaeus Alter" and "summus astrologus". The work was translated from Arabic into Castilian by Judah ben Moses, upon orders of King Alfonso X of Spain, and - in 1485 - from the Castilian into Latin, by Aegidius de Tebaldis and Petrus de Regio. A manuscript copy containing five of the eight books of a translation into Old Castilian by Yehuda ben Moshe Cohen survives in the National Library of Spain. "De Judiciis Astrorum", a Latin translation of the Old Castilian manuscript, was first published in Venice in 1485 and became an important source in Renaissance Europe for the understanding of medieval astrology. - Spine and binding repaired; some duststaining to the first pages. Entirely complete: VD 16 cites 20 ff. of prelims in error; all digitized copies entirely agree with the present specimen. Removed from the Ampleforth Abbey library in North Yorkshire with their bookplate to pastedown. A good copy. VD 16, A 1884. Cf. BM-STC German (1551 ed.). M. H. Machiavelli (Niccolò)
printed for Robert le Magnier, 1571. with woodcut printer's device on title, woodcut initials, penultimate leaf with a woodcut portrait of Machiavelli, title-page stained, mostly as a result of the attempt to wash out an inscription, fore-edge chipped, uniformly slightly browned, ff. [8], 64, 8vo, some contemporary underlining and side notes in French, these a little cropped, somewhat rustic 19th-century ?French leather backed boards, bright marbled endpapers, red edges, extremities rubbed, the spine a little chafed. These two works were probably issued together (Brunet at any rate says so), although they seem to be universally catalogued separately. The translator Gohory is primarily important for his role in disseminating Paracelsian ideas in France, but these translations of Machiavelli were important too. 'The business of the influence and reception of Machiavelli [in England] was complicated, as we know very well, by the intervention on the Elizabethan scene of the Huguenot commentator Innocent Gentillet, who in 1576 published his Discours contre Machiavel (with a Lat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Artist: Blaeu Willem Janszoon ( - 1638 ) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam date: ca 1665, 1571. technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Upper and lower centerfold perfectly restored; size (in cm): 38 x 49; Map shows the island group Spitzbergen (Svalbard) in the North Atlantic ( Arctic ocean), belonging to Norway. With title cartouche, shipstaffage and wind rose. Norsemen possibly discovered Svalbard as early as the 12th century. The Dutchman Willem Barentsz made the first discovery of the archipelago in 1596, when he sighted its coast while searching for the Northern Sea Route. The name Spitsbergen originated with Barentsz, who described the pointed mountains he saw on the west coast of the main island, Spitsbergen although his 1599 map of the Arctic labels the island as Het Nieuwe Land (The New Land). Barentsz did not recognize that he had discovered an archipelago, and consequently the name Spitsbergen long remained in use both for the main island and for the archipelago as a whole.

Venezia. A rival Island-book to the Isole Famose by Camocio was published by Simone Pinargenti, Venice 1573, under the title "Isole che son da Venetia nella Dalmatia et per tutto l’arcipelago fino a Costantinopoli". The Pinargenti’s are variously arranged i … [Click Below for Full Description]
