BRACTON, Henry
Richard Tottell, London, 1569. PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN FIRST EDITION, folio., ff (xvi) 444. Roman letter, index in italic, very large historiated initial repeated, others white on black. Uniform age yellowing, autograph of C O'Dunne at head of t-p (remounted at gutter as a little short), C19 bibl. notes along inner margin, on fly and versos and last. Armorial bookplates of O'Dunne and John Foster of Lincoln's Inn (C18) on pastedown and Ralph Barnes on fly. A good copy in full modern calf antique, central arabesques to covers. Divided into five books, each subdivided into chapters with subheadings whose contents are listed in detail in the extensive index in order of appearance, Bracton's 'De Legibus', completed in the 1250s, occupies a unique position in the history of the common law. It is the first attempt to treat the whole extent of English law in a manner both systematic and practical, it constitutes the first modern English law book and it is the outstanding legal work of any English writer of the Middle Ages. Bracton's encyclopaedic work was essentially practical, designed for judges and lawyers dealing with the cases which arose on a daily basis throughout the kingdom - he cites some four hundred and fifty of them in support of the principles which he enunciates in the clearest and most reliable manner. An ecclesiastic as well as for a quarter of a century one of the first professional judges, he has sometimes been accused of Romanising English law but more accurately he systematised the results which a series of clerical judges, familiar with both the civil an … [Click Below for Full Description]

DODONAEUS, R.
Antwerp, C. Plantin, 1569. 8vo (165 x 107mm). pp. 311, (9), with Plantin's device on title and 109 mostly full-page woodcuts by Arnaud Nicolai and G. van Kampen after drawings by Pieter van der Borcht. Contemporary vellum over boards (spine worn). The second edition (first 1568) of Dodoens' study of ornamental and fragrant plants, one of the earliest treatises on 'garden flowers'. The work includes many of the recent introductions from Asia Minor, bulbous plants in particular, that were transforming European gardens. "Dodoens' 'Florum, et coronariarum' was devoted to those flowers, ranging from herbaceous annuals and perennials to rare bulbous plants, that were traditionally used in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to form garlands and wreaths, 'coronae'; in fact, a garden planted with such flowers was sometimes referred to in this period as a 'hortus coronarius'. Among the flowers he describes are the rose, violet, lily, marguerite, marigold, amaranth, iris, narcissus, anemone and carnation and sweet-smelling herbs such as thyme, marjoram, lavender and lavender cotton. In the second edition of this work, which was published in 1569, Dodoens included descriptions of the tulip (p. 107), the 'Flos africanus' or tagetes (p. 62), and the 'Chrysanthemum perunianum' or sunflower (pp. 305-6), which, as the auhor explained, is crowned with flowers of 'exceptional size' and is native to 'Peru and other American regions''' (Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi, An Oak Spring Flora, p. 156).//Rembert Dodoens (1517-1585), Flemish physician and botanist, was one of the three great Flemish bot … [Click Below for Full Description]

ESTIENNE, Henri;
Estienne Paris 1569. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

THOMAS GUARINUS AND SAMUEL APIARIUS. 1569 BEAR BIBLE; First Complete Bible Printed in Spanish. Formerly owned by Oscar B. Cintas, Cuban Ambassador to the United States. LA BIBLIA, QUE ES, LOS SACROS LIBROS DEL VIEEIO Y NUEVO TESTAMENTO. TRASLADADA EN ESPAÑOL. [BASEL: THOMAS GUARINUS AND SAMUEL APIARIUS?], 1569. Title-page with woodcut printer's device of a bear cub raiding a beehive, one full-page woodcut plate and one woodcut text vignette, numerous woodcut initials. An extraordinary, complete copy. Clean and crisp. Full calf binding, gilt edges, hand marbled endpapers. La Biblia del Oso or the "Bear Bible," is the earliest edition of the complete Bible in Castilian Spanish. The translator was Cassisoro de Reina (ca. 1520–94) of Seville, who fled the Spanish Inquisition in 1557 and preached to Spanish Protestants in London, Antwerp, and Frankfurt-am-Main. The publisher and printer of his bible are not named within the book, but the copy Reina presented to the University of Basel in 1569 was inscribed with the name of the printer Thomas Guarinus and the printer's device is that which appeared in other books printed by the Apiarius family of Bern. Reina's "Bear bible" derives it nickname from the famous woodcut on the title, which shows a bear helping himself to honey from a hive. The bear was the emblem of Apiarius's native city state, Bern, and the bees are a reference to his family name. Other works printed by Apianus with this device also include the legend from Psalm 119: "how sweet are they words unto my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" Here one finds inste … [Click Below for Full Description]

FERNEL (Jean)
Pour une édition plus tardive de 1577, voir Heirs of Hippocrates 220.2 : "This is an uncommon posthumous edition of Fernel’s landmark work that served as a medical textbook for many decades. Fernel is generally considered to be the person who established physiology, pathology, and therapeutics as standard and discrete categories of medical inquiry. According to PMM [sic], “Both physiology and pathology had, of course, existed in rudimentary form before Fernel; but he was the pioneer who gave these subjects their names and established them as separate systems.” The second work in this volume is his treatise on therapeutics and treatments, including those for fevers, syphilis, and epilepsy Fernel was physician to Catherine de Medici, whose infertility he was credited with curing, and subsequently to Henri II, to his wife, and to his famous mistress, Diane de Poitiers. Fernel was an in … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Perret, Clément
[Antwerp], 1569.. Engraved title-page [plate 1], engraved plates 2-33. Complex grotesque and strapwork Mannerist ornamental borders on all leaves. Watermark: cluster of grapes. Oblong 4to. Nineteenth-century marbled boards, 3/4 cloth, with gilt red leather supralibros. Modern cloth slipcase. The exceedingly rare first issue of the first edition of this masterpiece in the history of writing and calligraphy, whose remarkable beauty and innovative character established it as the model par excellence for a whole series of books published in the Netherlands from 1594 on. That it is the work of an eighteen year-old boy is nothing short of astonishing.  "The 'Exercitatio' may be looked upon as a showpiece, a special collector's item suitable for princes, nobility and wealthy burghers, to be coveted by all lovers of penmanship. Presented in a large format, its beautifully written title, and exemplars all set within imaginative, intriguing, and richly decorated borders, no writing-book had hitherto been such a form. An additional feature which will have made the book even more attractive for collectors was the fact that never before had a writing-master's book been reproduced in copper engraving. Quite apart from the aesthetic advantages or disadvantages this method entailed in comparison with woodcut, hitherto used for reproducing script, this was a technical firstÂ…. Add to this that until then the models in such a book had never yet been written in so many languages, seven in all, and each of them in its appropriate hand" (Croiset van Uchelen). "With the exception of Neudörff … [Click Below for Full Description]
