FERNEL (Jean)
Pour une édition plus tardive de 1577, voir Heirs of Hippocrates 220.2 : "This is an uncommon posthumous edition of Fernel’s landmark work that served as a medical textbook for many decades. Fernel is generally considered to be the person who established physiology, pathology, and therapeutics as standard and discrete categories of medical inquiry. According to PMM [sic], “Both physiology and pathology had, of course, existed in rudimentary form before Fernel; but he was the pioneer who gave these subjects their names and established them as separate systems.” The second work in this volume is his treatise on therapeutics and treatments, including those for fevers, syphilis, and epilepsy Fernel was physician to Catherine de Medici, whose infertility he was credited with curing, and subsequently to Henri II, to his wife, and to his famous mistress, Diane de Poitiers. Fernel was an in … [Click Below for Full Description]

ACUPUNCTURE MANUSCRIPT
1569. 12 black & white drawings in the text. 16 leaves. 8vo (222 x 147 mm.), orig. wrappers. [Japan]: "copied in 1569 by Ogawa and presented to Kai." A very early acupuncture manuscript. The beginning of this text concerns the yin and yang of the needles and the five organs. The text quickly turns to intestinal worms in the human body and how to treat them with acupuncture and herbal medicines; the two treatments used in conjunction would provide relief from the symptoms (many of which are listed). There are a number of drawings of parasitical worms with their names, the symptoms they cause, and where they reside (lung, stomach, muscle, other tissues, the five organs, etc.). We learn that to effectively combat these worms, the acupuncturist would chill the needles. Instructions are given regarding how deeply the needles should be inserted and the names and locations of the acupuncture points. The final leaf contains the traditional illustration of the five organs, with the lung on top and the stomach at the bottom. Some worming touching the characters and images.

ESTIENNE (Henri).
A Paris Par Robert Estienne 1569 1Paris, Robert Estienne, 1569.

DOSIO, Giovanni Antonio
Rome: Unknown, 1569. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. In mid-16th-century Italy, architects and engravers took a great interest in the Ancient Roman ruins found throughout Rome. Two such figures were Giovanni Cavalieri and Giovanni Dosio. Cavalieri, a well-known engraver, began engraving the Dosio's illustrations of the most iconic Roman locations. These engravings were published in 1569 under the title 'Urbis Romae' and were immensely popular - curiously, another edition was never published! Notable illustrations found in this work include views of: · Roman forum · Arch of Constantine · The Colosseum · The Pantheon · Pyramid of Cestia · Catacombs of St Sebastian · Temple of Vesta / Temple of Hercules Victor · St. Bartholomew on the Island · Marcellus Theater · Egyptian and Roman Obelisks · Baths of Caracalla ruins.

[Inquisition] Pio V (Pope, 1566-1572).
[April, 1569]. [S.l.]. Broadside (422 x 310 mm). Unbound. Light damp staining, but overall fine.- Extremely rare Papal broadside, a Spanish translation of the bull “Si de protegendis”, a Papal defense of the Inquisition, condeming any person who interferes with the Inquisidors. This Bull effectively garnished the ministers of the Inquisition with the highest authority, cloaking them with protection from the Church, and thus from civil authorities. The Bull extended to all Spanish dominions, which included New Spain, where it had considerable effect, a year later Ocharte would publish the same in Mexico City. The Bull was published in Latin in Rome –thus we assume this was also published in Rome-, and shortly later in Mexico (1570, by Ocharte). All of these are extremely rare, of this printing we can only trace a single copy, at the University of Notre Dame, McDevitt Collection on the Spanish Inquisition “asserting papal protection of inquisitorial witnesses and recognition of rights pertaining to familiars and officials” (Univrsity of Notre Dame). Inquisition] Pio V (Pope, 1566-1572).
1569. The Inquisition is granted powers and protection, of fundamental relevance for the Americas. [April, 1569]. [S.l.]. Broadside (422 x 310 mm). Unbound. Light damp staining, but overall fine. 16,000 $ Extremely rare Papal broadside, a Spanish translation of the bull “Si de protegendis”, a Papal defense of the Inquisition, condeming any person who interferes with the Inquisidors. The broadside was possibly printed in Rome. Text signed by “F. Cardenal de Pisa, Obispo de Hostia . Paolo FARINATI (Verona 1524 - 1606)
Etching and engraving, signed at bottom left PAUL' FARINAT F. Example in the third state of three. A good impresison, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the paltemark, in good condition. Mary Magdalene in the desert seated before a cross at the left holding a book with her left hand, right on her breast. The artist himself referred to this etching in his Diary. It had been considered as the iconographical model for a small painting in reverse, commissioned from the artist by Niccolo Troian in 1581, today in Narodní Galerie, Prague, inv. no. 814. According to Albricci 1980, the painting derives from a drawing, today lost, that was transformed into this etching at around the time of the painting's commission. Giorgio Marini argued that Farinati must have based his painting on a preparatory drawing rather than the print. The composition is close to Battista del Moro's painting of the same subject, included originally in the cicle of the Manuta cathedral, today in its sacristy. Bartsch XVI.164.2; Albricci 19.2; Marini in Verona 2006, no. 193.

Nicolo Nelli
Nicolo Nelli, Venice, 1569. The first known catalogue of agricultural brands. The brands cataloged here were applied to horses of the rich and royal, mainly in Italy. About this Edition - This copy has 72 brands and a horse. There are two variants in the bibliographies, one with 76 plates and one with 87 plates. I produced a facsimile gathering of the fourteen plates the Austrian copy has, which mine does not. Watermark Verification - In my copy are several examples of an anchor within a ring, and a countermark over three rings. As recorded in the Gravell watermark database (record "anchor.510.1", among others) these watermarks indicate the paper is from Venice in the mid-16th century. Rarity - This book seldom reaches the market. Princeton's Rare Books and Special Collections refers to their copy as a "highlight". In an article entitled "Brand Books in the Princeton Collections of Western Americana" (William S. Reese), the author writes: "The earliest example known is the Libro de marchi de caualli . . . (Venice, 1569), a copy of which is in the Princeton collection. Although the plates are elegant examples of Venetian engraving, the format of the book anticipates later developments in its duodecimo size, intended for pocketsized portability in the field, and its clear presentation of the branded patterns. Entirely devoted to horses, it always illustrates a primary brand, and often a secondary one to be found on the opposite flank or some other part of the horse. Most of the brands seem to be modified versions of family symbols, or in some cases simplified versions of coat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: Gulielmum Merlin and others, 1569. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Enormous folio printing of the works of Saint Ambrose "No one heals himself by wounding another." ― Ambrose of Milan Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, is the most important ecclesiastical father of the 4th-century and has continually been an influence both in Milan and throughout the Western world even though he has been associated with persecutions of non-Christians. Most of surviving writings are exegetical in nature; letters and essays in which he writes on faith, offices of the church, the Holy Ghost, mysteries of God, commentary of the Gospels and Old Testament, as well as funeral orations. This 1569 edition of the works of Ambrose is an enormous folio printing - five volumes printed in one huge tome.

NIKETAS CHONIATES & Nicephorus GREGO.
Vinetia, aperesso Gabriel Giolito di Ferrarii, 1569.3 volumes in 1. 19th century vellum, spine gilt (1 hinge broken but holding). With engraved printer's device on title-pages, woodcut initials and headpieces. (20),127,(1); (20),254,(2); (24),302,(2) pp.The Byzantine historian Niketas Choniates (c.1155-1216), was born in Chonai (Phrygia, Asia Minor, and present day Khonas), hence his name Choniates. He joined his older brother Michael in Constantinople, where he embarked upon a political career, and became an important civil servant. As governor of Thrace he was personally involved in the events relating to Frederick Barbarossa's passage through Thrace during the Third Cusade in 1189, when he lost his province to the Germans.A major work with an eyewitness account of the disastrous capture and sack of Constantinople by soldiers of the Fourth Crusade in 1204.It was written probably between 1204 and 1210 and it is to this work that his fame as an historian of medieval Constantinople rests. Covering the period from 1180 to 1206, it is practically an account of the fateful reigns of the last of the Comneni especially the vicissitudes of the royal city during the Fourth Crusade (1204); its siege, capture, and pillage by the Latin Christians. In spite of its florid and bombastic style, it is of considerable value as a record and for its time, on the whole impartial, of events of which he was either eyewitness or had heard of first hand. Its most interesting portion is the description of the capture of Constantinople.Nicephorus Gregoras (c.1295-1360), Byzantine historian, man of l … [Click Below for Full Description]
