Perret, Clément
[Antwerp], 1569.. Engraved title-page [plate 1], engraved plates 2-33. Complex grotesque and strapwork Mannerist ornamental borders on all leaves. Watermark: cluster of grapes. Oblong 4to. Nineteenth-century marbled boards, 3/4 cloth, with gilt red leather supralibros. Modern cloth slipcase. The exceedingly rare first issue of the first edition of this masterpiece in the history of writing and calligraphy, whose remarkable beauty and innovative character established it as the model par excellence for a whole series of books published in the Netherlands from 1594 on. That it is the work of an eighteen year-old boy is nothing short of astonishing.  "The 'Exercitatio' may be looked upon as a showpiece, a special collector's item suitable for princes, nobility and wealthy burghers, to be coveted by all lovers of penmanship. Presented in a large format, its beautifully written title, and exemplars all set within imaginative, intriguing, and richly decorated borders, no writing-book had hitherto been such a form. An additional feature which will have made the book even more attractive for collectors was the fact that never before had a writing-master's book been reproduced in copper engraving. Quite apart from the aesthetic advantages or disadvantages this method entailed in comparison with woodcut, hitherto used for reproducing script, this was a technical firstÂ…. Add to this that until then the models in such a book had never yet been written in so many languages, seven in all, and each of them in its appropriate hand" (Croiset van Uchelen). "With the exception of Neudörff … [Click Below for Full Description]

The illustrations were to be made in the vein of those made by Bernard Salomon for Jean de Tournes. Vettori, Pietro.
Florence: Filippo Giunti e fratelli, 1569. First edition. One of the most erudite and accomplished intellectuals of the late Renaissance, Pietro Vettori (1499-1585) served as the house philologist for the Giunti publishing firm, and held the chair in Latin and Greek at the Florence Studio. A first-echelon classicist, he prepared several important editions of ancient texts, culminating in the standard Renaissance text of Aristotle's Poetics. While this essay on the cultivation and production of olives is profoundly informed by Vettori's classical scholarship, it is, as he says, a labor of love ("composto con amore"). Indeed, Vettori describes the olive tree in sensual terms, extolling its grace and beauty that invite caresses ("sua vaghezza e leggiadria merita d'essere accarezzata.") He approaches the subject from the perspective of a practical farmer who is also able to condense the advice of classical and modern literary sources such as Columella, Theophrastus, Cato, Varro, Sophocles, and Dante. The book opens with a sort of brief survey of the literature, followed by a long central section of practical instruction on the planting, cultivation, and harvesting of olive trees. The last section deals with production and use of olive oil. The present copy was owned by an Italian farmer of the sixteenth or seventeenth century who made notes in the margins and underlines in the text. This farmer ignored the literary history and even the section on oil production, but paid close attention to the middle section on planting and cultivation. The farmer's notes and comments provide … [Click Below for Full Description]

[AMADIS DE GAULE].
BMC STC German, p. 24; Brunet I, col. 219; VD16 A 2138. First edition of the German translation of the 16th book of Amadis de Gaule, a collection of popular chivalric novels, translated from a French adaptation of the original Spanish chivalric romance. Amadis de Gaule was modelled after characters from the King Arthur tradition, especially Lancelot, and also heavily influenced by the legend of Tristan and Iseult. Amadis became an exemplary knight: a good Christian who rescued people and fought monsters. The complete series consisted of 24 books, published at Frankfurt between 1569 and 1595. The first surviving Amadis de Gaule was published in 1508 at Saragossa in 4 volumes, edited and enlarged by Rodrigues de Montalvo, and became immensely popular, though the text probably dates back to the 14th century. The French adaptation of the text by Nicolas Herberay increased the work's popularity throughout Europe and inspired many sequels and similar texts. These works also gave impetus to works like Don Quixote, which mocked the chivalric genre.Reasonable copy. Foxed and slightly browned throughout, with a water stain in the upper margin of the first few leaves and a larger water stain on the last 100 pages. Binding damaged at the head and foot of the spine, revealing a manuscript fragment supporting the spine, front board stained.

Paolo FORLANI
[Click Below for Full Description]
