VASARI, GIORGIO
2nd Edition Florence: Giunti, 1568. FIRST COMPLETE, FIRST ILLUSTRATED, AND MOST SOUGHT AFTER EDITION OF THE FIRST MODERN HISTORY OF ART. [The Second Edition overall.] An exceptional copy, very handsomely bound. Vasari's "book contains the biographies of Italian painters, etc. from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century. They are based on earlier written and printed sources, on oral accounts, on his knowledge of works of art and his own collection of large drawings. Vasari traveled extensively to collect personal information, meeting most of the artists of his time... Michelangelo was his great hero. The Lives are freely laced with stories and anecdotes, some of which are certainly apocryphal... Vasari's excellent sense of narrative, however, and lively style combined with his wide personal acquaintance makes his 'Lives' a vital contribution to our understanding of the character and psychology of the great artists of the Renaissance, a term ('rinascita') which he was the first writer to use... It also contains an autobiography and a valuable treatise on the technical methods employed in the arts. It became a model for subsequent writings on the history of art... For its period it has remained the chief authority and new editions are published regularly" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 88).   This second edition--the first illustrated and the preferred edition--comprises 161 lives, 28 more than the first edition of 1550 and it brings the biographies up to date from 1550 to 1568. The portraits were designed by the author himself (to his contemporaries he was first and f … [Click Below for Full Description]

MENDANA Y NEYRA, Álvaro de.
Spain: 18th-century transcript of an original dated 1568. Folio (310 x 210 mm), 18 leaves, manuscript in ink on paper, written in a fine and legible 18th-century hand; bound in plain red-brown boards. Important original account of Mendaña's voyage across the Pacific from Peru and the discovery of the Solomon Islands in 1567-8, reproduced in 18th-century manuscript from a lost 16th-century original. This was an exceptionally important voyage, and the precursor to Pedro Fernandez de Quiros's subsequent voyage and his famous project to colonise what was then thought to be the Southern Continent.Mendaña's discoveries in the Solomons of Ysabel (Santa Isabel), Guadalcanal, and San Cristobal in 1567 led to his colonising voyage of 1595 to the nearby Santa Cruz ("Austrialia del Spiritu Santo" as it became known), in the course of which he died: the command of this second voyage was taken over by Quiros, beginning the most significant chapter in the history of discovery and colonisation in the southern hemisphere. The voyages of Mendaña and Quiros, as Oscar Spate has noted, were "among the most remarkable in the whole history of maritime discovery":This handsome manuscript was acquired by Sir Thomas Phillipps from the bookseller Henry Stevens along with other manuscripts from the library of Lord Kingsborough in 1860; catalogued by Phillipps as MS 16179, it was subsequently in the private collection of the late H.P. Kraus in New York. It is a companion manuscript to another held by the National Library of Australia (Phillipps MS 16224) with the same provenance from Kingsborough via S … [Click Below for Full Description]

AESOP and [Henri-François d'AGUESSEAU].
1568. Hodnett, Marcus Gheeraerts, pp. 38-41; Hollstein XXI, p. 80; Smith, Het schouwtoneel der dieren, pp. 39-41. The third French Aesop adaptation to use the 140 plates originally etched by Aegidius or Gilles Sadeler (ca. 1568/70-1629) for his Theatrum morum (Prague, 1608), here reordered and with a new prose text, probably written by Henri-François d'Aguesseau (1668-1751), Chancellor of France three times between 1717 and 1750. The etching for fable 117 shows an American buffalo (bizon), the earliest image that really looks like the animal familiar to us today. "These added designs by Sadeler are highlights in the history of book illustration" (Hodnett, p. 39).With a 20th-century bookplate and ink stamps. The copper plate for fable 90 had lost much of its detail and some others show slight degradation, but in general they remained in good condition and are also well printed. The corner of 1 leaf has been torn off, and there is an occasional small marginal tear or faint stain, but the book remains in good condition and has large margins. The binding is chipped and cracked at top of the spine and shows a few smaller defects, but is also in good condition. A late showing of 140 of the best illustrations in the Aesop tradition, etched and engraved in 1608.

Donato BERTELLI (Attivo a Venezia seconda metà del XVI secolo)
Molta rara. Bibliografia: Christie's (1998): n. 992; Dzikowski (1940): n. 101; Ganado (1982): n. 77; Tooley (1939): n. 443?; cf. Valerio (1998): p. 45, 7, n. 20 e 8, n. 19. Paolo FORLANI (Attivo a Venezia seconda metà del XVI secolo)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Borba de Moraes, p. 826 ("This French edition is much sought after"); Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 362; Sabin 89451; Tiele, Bibl. 1030. First and only edition of the French translation of one of the bestsellers of illustrated 17th-century travel literature, describing one of the most famous early voyages around the world by Joris van Spilbergen (1568-1620), a veteran Dutch East Indies naval officer-turned-pirate, undertaken from 1614 to 1618. A short survey of another of the most important early voyages around the world, by Schouten and Le Maire in the years 1615 to 1617, is added at the end (pp. 117-172) with drop-title "Navigationes Australes". It reports Le Maire's proof that Tierra del Fuego is an island and his discovery of what is still called the Strait of Le Maire, an alternative route to the Pacific. Rich in ethnographic detail, the numerous illustrations in the Miroir include oversized penguins, llamas and an Andean condor with a nine-foot wing span. Naval battles, beleaguered Spanish settlements, and newly discovered islands are also depicted in detail, making the work a valuable compendium of adventure on the high seas during the Age of Discovery. With several owner's inscriptions. With a few manuscript annotations in the margin. Lacking the world map. Washed with a brush, leaving light brown steaks on most leaves, and further with an occasional leaf foxed or smudged and an occasional minor tear. Otherwise a good copy of an extraordinary journal.

Ruscelli, Girolamo
Venice: Heirs of Marchio Sessa, 1568. FIRST EDITION. Very good antiquarian condition. Small 4to. Collation: +4 A-P4 (with final blank P4) = 64 ff. COMPLETE. Sessa's Pegasus device on the title-page (Ascarelli, fig. 81) + 28 woodcuts upwards of 180 x 90 mm in size, of which 11 are full-page. Bound in 19th-century red quarter calf over mottled boards, spine lettered direct in the second compartment. Title-page with unobtrusive mend (1 cm) on lower blank margin; on the verso and opposing page some soiling, otherwise the text is quite clean and crisp. An appealing copy. One of the most significant military treatises of the Italian Renaissance which had international influence. The text is definitive and is beautifully illustrated with exacting woodcuts of military rockets, defense weaponry, bombs, ammunition, compasses, fireballs, mines, fortifications and tunnels created by sappers or combat engineers, a surveying instrument, a rudimentary lifejacket, and even military medicine. Among the most striking woodcuts are those of the soldiers' lances set ablaze, elaborately rendered and minutely described. The author presents what is effectively a compilation of "modern" Italian Renaissance militaria, arranged in 78 maxims and formulas. The "Precetti" is recognized as one of the most influential early book on warfare and weaponry, a practical guide for the newest warfare technology. The importance of the "Precetti della militia moderna" is attested by the fact that it was frequently reprinted for the next 150 years. STCN (2 copies); Typ. Batava 6733 (3 copies). A proclamation by the Dutch States General banning the export of goods that might be used for military purposes or shipbuilding from the Dutch Republic to regions under control of the King of Spain or his allies, specifically mentioning saltpeter, gunpowder, ammunition, fuses, muskets, halberds, copper, cables, rope, masts of 16 palms (about 49 cm) or thicker, five different sorts of grain, etc. The text is signed at the end by the clerk of the States General, Cornelis van Aerssen. Although the revolt of the Low Countries against Habsburg Spain had begun already in 1568 and the former Habsburg provinces united under the Union of Utrecht in 1579, it was not until 1589 that the States General took on the role of a formal governing body independent of any monarch. In very good condition and wholly untrimmed. Koln: Coloniæ, apud Theodorum Baumium, 1568. - 8vo.; 24 hojas, 363 folios, 1 hoja. PARACELSUS
Title printed in red & black. 103 unnumbered leaves, one blank leaf. Small 8vo, modern vellum over boards. [Colophon]: Augsburg: M. Franck for G. Willer, [1568]. First edition of a Paracelsian rarity. Paracelsus' commentaries on the first five of Hippocrates' Aphorisms had been published the previous year in Cologne. The present edition comprises his commentaries on all 25 aphorisms of the first section, and on six of the second. They are followed by treatises on the medical uses of corals and the herbs hypericum (St. John's worts) and persicaria (peachwort). A slightly different version of the section on hypericum was published in the same year by Adam von Bodenstein (Sudhoff 95). In his preface the anonymous editor gives what he calls an impartial discussion of Paracelsian ideas. He points out that Paracelsus' rude and aggressive style of writing and his personal conduct might have been regrettable, but now, 33 years after his death, the controversy should moderate since there is not such a chasm between the old medical school (Hippocrates and Galen) and iatrochemistry. Fine copy. Sudhoff 100. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A manuscript copy of a 1568 manuscript map of what were then islands and waterways in Zeeland, covering the eastern half of Walcheren, most of Zuid-Beveland, the southern edge of Noord-Beveland and some smaller islands. It includes the cities of Middelburg, Veere, Vlissingen and Goes, and about twenty smaller towns and villages. It is executed in pen and watercolour in subtle shades ochre, blue, yellow, grey, green and pink and represents the cities and towns pictorially (with major churches and sometimes smaller buildings and fortifications), shows roads, 7 boats and ships in the water and sandbanks.
