Mena, Fernando [Sir James Y. Simpson's copy].
Antuerpiae: Ex officina Christophori Plantini, 1568. Quarto. 167, [1], 110, [2]pp. Later calf, rebacked. Bound with: Wolff, Hans Kaspar. Gynaeciorum ... With the Latin text of: "Libellus Hipp. Peri eptam?nou, hoc est, De septimestri partu …" and of "Libellus Hipp. De medicamentis purgantibus ..." Both works are attributed to Hippocrates but in fact are by an unknown author. A lovely copy. Additionally, this item has an intriguing entry that points to a wonderful provenance. On one of the front free endpapers, the name 'Sir James Y. Simpson' is boldly inscribed. I cannot ascertain whether the inscription is in Sir James Simpson's hand, or whether he signed his name as 'Sir James Y. Simpson' in later years. Signatures of his that I have seen on-line look rather different. It is possible, however, that this was a simple acknowledgement by Sir James Y. Simpson of his ownership of the item. Secondly, this book came from a collection of other medical books containing the bookplate of Sir Alexander Russell Simpson in memory of Sir James Young Simpson, so that the association with the Simpsons is undeniable..

VESALIUS, Andreas.
Venetiis [Venice]: Apud Franciscum Franciscium Senensem, & Joannem Criegher Germanum, 1568. Fourth edition (the third in folio with illustrations), and the first to be posthumously published. This edition is well printed on durable paper and set up with marginal notes exactly as in the Basel 1555 edition. In 1564 Vesalius stopped in Venice on his way to the Holy Land and submitted his last book, a reply to Falloppio, to the printer Francesco Senense for publication. Vesalius died later than year on the island of Zante. Four year later and in collaboration with a Pomeranian engraver, Joannes Criegher, Senense printed the present edition, the complete text of the 1555 Fabrica but in smaller folio format and with the woodcuts slightly reduced. "The new woodcuts for the illustrations, however, were so well executed that the engraver might almost have passed for the same person who in Venice at the behest of Vesalius had cut the original blocks for the larger work" (Cushing). It must have been an expensive undertaking, but it shows that there was still a demand for the Latin text and the illustrations that could be met by a less costly edition than the ponderous 1555 edition. Cushing, Bio-bibliography, VI.A.-4.Folio, 6 leaves, pp. 510, (46). With 20 full-page and about 130 smaller anatomical woodcuts in the text. Printer's woodcut device on title. Early 18th-century mottled sheep, spine gilt. Bookplates of Piergiorgio Borio, M.D. A nice crisp copy in attractive condition.

VASARI, GIORGIO
Florence: Giunti, 1568. 2nd Edition. FIRST COMPLETE, FIRST ILLUSTRATED, AND MOST SOUGHT AFTER EDITION OF THE FIRST MODERN HISTORY OF ART. [The Second Edition overall.] An exceptional copy, very handsomely bound. Vasari's "book contains the biographies of Italian painters, etc. from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century. They are based on earlier written and printed sources, on oral accounts, on his knowledge of works of art and his own collection of large drawings. Vasari traveled extensively to collect personal information, meeting most of the artists of his time... Michelangelo was his great hero. The Lives are freely laced with stories and anecdotes, some of which are certainly apocryphal... Vasari's excellent sense of narrative, however, and lively style combined with his wide personal acquaintance makes his 'Lives' a vital contribution to our understanding of the character and psychology of the great artists of the Renaissance, a term ('rinascita') which he was the first writer to use... It also contains an autobiography and a valuable treatise on the technical methods employed in the arts. It became a model for subsequent writings on the history of art... For its period it has remained the chief authority and new editions are published regularly" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 88).This second edition--the first illustrated and the preferred edition--comprises 161 lives, 28 more than the first edition of 1550 and it brings the biographies up to date from 1550 to 1568. GUICCIARDINI, Francesco
Venetia (Venice): Niccolo Beuilacqua, 1568. . 8vo. (xxiv), 470, (3) pp. 19th century marbled boards, gilt lettered black spine label, discreet private ownership blindstamp of Charles Bradlaugh M.P. to the first free endpaper accompanied by the ownership inscription of Joseph Mazzini Wheeler on the front pastedown and a note regarding Bradlaugh’s prior ownership, Wheeler’s signature also appearing later on in the book. Lower corner of pp. 65-66 torn with the loss of the final letter in the catchword only, some intermittent browning, a few light marks, binding a bit worn, but sound. An early edition of Guicciardini’s account of Italian history in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, comprising books I-XVI. A further four books were issued separately and are not present here.& Charles Bradlaugh, lawyer, politician and freethinker, gained notoriety by refusing to take the oath of allegiance on entering Parliament, rather preferring to offer an affirmation on account of his atheism and republicanism. Provoking much consternation, Select Committees were formed to look into the matter and he fought for the right to sit in Parliament until he was finally allowed to take his oath in 1886. An act formally allowing M.P.’s to make affirmations was duly passed two years later. Joseph Mazzini Wheeler was of a similar mind to Bradlaugh, writing and publishing many works relating to atheism and freethinking, most famously his “Biographical Dictionary of Freethinkers“ published in 1889.

[MAP - NETHERLANDS - ZEELAND]. RUYTE, Lieven.
Cf. Donkersloot-de Vrij, Topografische kaarten 692; Zelandia illustrata, p. 615. A manuscript copy of a 1568 manuscript map of what were then islands and waterways in Zeeland, covering the eastern half of Walcheren, most of Zuid-Beveland, the southern edge of Noord-Beveland and some smaller islands. It includes the cities of Middelburg, Veere, Vlissingen and Goes, and about twenty smaller towns and villages. It is executed in pen and watercolour in subtle shades ochre, blue, yellow, grey, green and pink and represents the cities and towns pictorially (with major churches and sometimes smaller buildings and fortifications), shows roads, 7 boats and ships in the water and sandbanks. The map was originally drawn by the surveyor Lieven Ruyte (ca. 1553-1601), apparently based on his own survey, and covers an area of about 19×27 kilometres. The original map of 1568 is said to have been in the hands of the town clerk of the city of Goes but is now known only from copies. With some foxing, mostly in or near the margins, but otherwise in very good condition. Some minor tears are confined to the margins and the map is very slightly worn along an old vertical fold. A detailed map showing islands and waterways in Zeeland as they were in 1568.

Basel: Oporinus, 1568. Weyer [Wier], Johann (1515-88). De praestigiis daemonum, et incantationibus ac veneficiis libri sex, aucti & recogniti. 8vo. 697, [55, index]pp. Woodcut illustration. Basel: ex officinal Oporiniana, 1568. 195 x 122 mm. Blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, brass clasps, rebacked retaining original spine, rear endpapers renewed, some staining; boxed. Very good. Copious notes in an early hand on front endpapers, title and verso title.Fourth edition, revised and enlarged. First published in 1563, Weyer's De praestigiis daemonum was the first major European work to take an empirical, scientific approach to the study of mental illness; it also represents one of the most celebrated exposés of the witchcraft delusion. Defying the authorities of the Inquisition and the doctrines of the Malleus maleficarum, which assumed the reality of witchcraft and demonic possession, Weyer asserted that most witches were actually suffering from mental illness. He backed his claim with careful descriptions of a number of case histories from his own clinical experience, containing some of the earliest references to purely psychological treatment. To emphasize the superstitious ignorance of doctors who adhered to demonological theory, Weyer analyzed the effects of the stupefying and hallucinatory drugs used in sixteenth-century medicine, attributing many aspects of witchcraft to their effects. He recognized the relationship between a highly suggestible temperament and mental instability, and described the phenomenon of mass contagion of mental illness. Weyer "was the first … [Click Below for Full Description]

MENDANA Y NEYRA, Álvaro de.
Spain: 18th-century transcript of an original dated 1568. Folio (310 x 210 mm), 18 leaves, manuscript in ink on paper, written in a fine and legible 18th-century hand; bound in plain red-brown boards. Important account of Mendaña's voyage across the Pacific from Peru and the discovery of the Solomon Islands in 1567-8, reproduced in 18th-century manuscript from a lost 16th-century original. This handsome manuscript was acquired by Sir Thomas Phillipps from Henry Stevens along with other manuscripts from the library of Lord Kingsborough in 1860; it was subsequently in the private collection of the late H.P. Kraus in New York. It is a companion manuscript to another held by the National Library of Australia (Phillipps MS 16224) with the same provenance from Kingsborough via Stevens and numbered at the head of the first leaf "No. 1" while ours is marked "No. 2". Both mss. are in the simple red-brown paper boards typical of bindings done for Phillipps. This exceptionally significant voyage was the precursor to Pedro Fernandez de Quiros's subsequent voyage and his famous project to colonise what was then thought to be the Southern Continent. Mendaña's discoveries in the Solomons of Ysabel (Santa Isabel), Guadalcanal, and San Cristobal in 1567 led to his colonising voyage of 1595 to the nearby Santa Cruz ("Austrialia del Spiritu Santo" as it became known), in the course of which he died: the command of this second voyage was taken over by Quiros, beginning the most significant chapter in the history of discovery and colonisation in the southern hemisphere. The voyages of Mendaña a … [Click Below for Full Description]
