POMPONAZZI, Pietro (1462-1525). -
Basel, Henricpetri, 1567. Small 8vo. Contemporary calf, blind stamped spine and covers with gilt angle pieces, spine with raised bands; slightly rubbed and lacking ties. A few woodcut initials and printer's device at end. [62, incl. 3 (of 4) blank leaves], 1015, (1) pp.; title slightly dust soiled, but generally a very good copy from John Evelyn's library (see Christie's, 16 March 1978, lot 1207). A scarce collective edition. It contains the second edition of the De incantationibus (pp. 1 - 325; first edn.: Basel 1556), in which Pomponazzi, the leading representative of Renaissance Aristotelianism, very daringly applied naturalistic explanations to seemingly miraculous events, including Christian miracles, and the first edition of the De fato (pp. 329 - 1015), the significant treatise on fate, free will and predestination. They are the largest works by the influential philosopher, and both were published posthumously by the physician and philosopher Gulielmo Gratarolo (1516 - 68), who settled in Basel after fleeing from Italy because of his religious beliefs. DSB XI, pp.71 - 74. Caillet, 8818. Wellcome I, 5154. Thorndike V, pp. 98 - 110.

Venezia, Francesco De' Franceschi, 1567.
1567. Illustrated with 205 large woodcuts, including 74 full-page and 7 double-page blocks; magnificent allegorical woodcut title border; large woodcut head-pieces and large floriated and grotesque woodcut initials; leaf I4 slightly taller than the rest of the text block, to accommodate a tall column woodcut, with about 2 cm section at top folded in. Royal Folio. 19th-century ¼-vellum over marbled boards; spine decorated and lettered in gilt; edges gilt. Paris: Fédéric Morel, 1567. First Edition. First Issue. The most influential and most lavishly illustrated handbook of French Renaissance architecture. The first and only published volume. A second volume was planned by the author but never completed. De lOrmes text systematically traces the process of building, from the choice to the smallest decorative details. In addition, this work is a major source for biographical information on de LOrme. His style is as much personal, as theoretical, and his comments on relations between patron and architect or on the practical problems involved in certain structures are based on his own experience. The second volume of the Architecture proposed by de LOrme at the end of the dedication and again at the end of the text, was never published. (Mortimer, Harvard College Libr. Cat.: French 16th-century Books, No. 355) Describing the illustrations of this splendid volume, Mortimer writes: Among the buildings shown in detail are the château of Anet, built by de LOrme for Diane de Poitiers, in his capacity as royal architect to Henri II, and de LOrme's own house in Paris. It is characteristi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Seth Viotto,, Parma, 1567. In 4° ant. (19,8 x 14,5). Pp.(20), 100. S. DRAKE/I.E. DRABKIN, Mechanics in XVI Century in Italy, 1969, p. 52: "Ceredi was interested in the construction and use of the Archimedean screw for the irrigation of the fields and the draining of swamps. Results led him to specify a maximum lenght and optimum dimension for the water-channel, to suggest batteries of screws for lifts higher than the efficient maximum lenght and to examine the design of the cranks and other devices for turning the screws". First edition of a Catholic Reformation defense of communion and refutation of controversial writings, especially those of Cyriackus Spangenberg (1528–1604) and Jakob Andreae (1528–90): Bucer, Melanchthon, and the like are covered as well, and so too the writings of Schwenkfeld, Brentz, and Calvin. The title-page is printed in red and black with the main text written in German and Latin, printed in black letter with the occasional Greek word and marginal notes in roman.    Evidence of Readership: Underlines, short notes, and a manicule sprinkled throughout text in an early hand, including a reference to "fol. 20" on the title-page.    Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Venezia, Francesco de' Franceschi Senese & J. Criegher, 1567. Folio. 17th century vellum, leather label on spine. Printer' device (twice), a full - page illustration on verso of title, and 135 woodcuts by Johann Chrieger, including machines, hydraulic devices, clocks, musical instruments and a full - page bird's eye view of Venice not found in earlier issues. (20), 375, (1) pp.; a good copy; a few leaves misbound in quire H and some occasional mild damp staining. First edition with Barbaro's commentary in Latin. In 1556 Barbaro (1513 - 70) published an Italian translation of Vitruvius with a commentary «which follows closely the Latin Philander edition of 1552» (Fowler). That very successful Italian edition was followed by this new Latin version, probably intended for a larger scholarly audience throughout Europe. «In his address to the reader, Franceschi states that when he asked Barbaro for permission to reprint his Italian Vitruvius he received from him the Latin version as well, with added text and illustrations for both versions» (Mortimer). The woodcuts by Johann Chrieger, a German artist active in Venice, are reduced copies of those in the 1556 edition which had been drawn by Palladio. An edition in Italian was also published in 1567. Cicognara 716. Fowler 409. Mortimer, Harvard, 550. [Click Below for Full Description]

FAERNO, Gabriello
(Anvers), Christophe Plantin, 1567. A la fin : "Excudebat Christophorus Plantinus Anterverpiae, mense Junio, an. MDLXII." Le dernier feuillet blanc manque, quelques légères rousseurs. Bon exemplaire. *-------* First edition by Christophe Plantin and the first in Low Countries. These small woodcuts served in all succeeding editions until 1727. Landwehr, Emblem and fable books printed in the Low Countries F096. Voet 1163. In-16.

Abraham BZOWSKI (1567 – 1637) Köln: Botzer 1613. 4º (17 x 21 x 8 cm)contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards with two clasps, with a monogram M. C. S. and dated 1616 (slightly age toned and stained, binding with minor rubbing, purple ink stains on the binding and the lower side).
- Religious texts by Abraham Bzowski (Bzovius) (1567, Proszowice –1637 Rome), one of the most prominent Polish Dominican authors of the Post-Tridentine period. He was active in Warsaw, Krakow and Wroclaw. In Poland he was "one of the most zealous and earliest systematic promoters of the rosary" (Piotr Stolarski, Friars on the Frontier: Catholic Renewal and the Dominican Order , p. 165). His texts were considered controversial in Poland and Bzowski was criticized by the Franciscans and Jesuits. After getting into a conflict with the Protestants he moved to Rome in 1611, where he spent more than years writing about church history. Bzowski’s works were published among others in Rome, Venice and Cologne. He was also corresponding with Tomasz Zamoyski, Fabian Birkowski and Jerzy Ossoli?ski. One year before his death he retired to a monastery, after his apartment in Vatican has been raided by a heretic, who murdered his assistant. - Estreicher XIII, 495. The only known copy on the market, only few examples known in the libraries worldwide.

SACROBOSCO, Johannes de (c. 1195-1256) – VINET, Élie, trans. (1509-1587)
Lyon: (Symphorien Barbier for) heirs of Jacobus Giunta, 1567. Paperback. Very Good. 8vo (159 x 105mm). [16], 207pp, [15] (of [17]) pages; lacks the final blank. Signatures: *(8), a-n(8), A(8). Woodcut printer’s device of fleur-de lis. Dedicated Thomas Gadagne of Lyon. With commentary by Élie Vinet (1509-1587), humanist of Bordeaux, and Giovanni Pierio Valeriano Bolzani. Numerous in-text woodcut illustrations and astronomical diagrams; but lacking the volvelles. Contemporary limp vellum; (recased, endpapers renewed; slight marginal dampstaining and occasional browning). Early 17th-century ownership inscriptions and names to title in Latin, “Canonici” could refer to “Canon” teachings and suggests a student association. The date “1642” is written on the bottom fore-edge and “1781” on the top fore-edge of the book, perhaps giving a range to this association. Sacrobosco’s Sphaera was widely copied in manuscript form and was also one the first scientific works to be published in 1472. It was particularly valued for its textbook knowledge. The Sphaera underwent more than 200 successive editions, up to the 17th century. Sacrobosco’s popular, illustrated astronomical tract, the ‘Sphaera’ with commentary by Vinet, a textbook favorite for early humanists. This Giunta edition, augmented by mathematician Élie Vinet, was designed as a textbook for students competent in mathematics and geometry; but Vinet also combined his philological notes with parallel passages from ancient poets and elementary manuals. Interestingly, it is known that parts of Sacrobosco’s text survive … [Click Below for Full Description]
