God
Lyon: Huchin for Frellon, 1567. See pictures. Spine/joints/hinge renewed; a nice job, well matched with original boards. Some shelf wear, age to original boards. Bottom of 1st blank endpaper (flyleaf) has been removed, same page has writing at top. Small corner loss of 1st printed page "Chronologia" and 1st map (next page). No title page. Marginal annotations, occasional textual marks including strikethroughs, intermittent water mark (more present near ends). Ink dot top margin pages 315 to 340. Map at 457 missing its bottom that would have folded out. Missing colophon. Although the title page, and colophon have been withdrawn, I've went through the other pages and (despite a few printer's numbering errors) the Bible is complete. Although 450 years old, still entirely readable and the re-spine eliminated any structural problems; strong book that will last hundreds of years more with care. The most interesting 16th century bible I've had. I love the faded gauffered edges, in an early style. In addition, there are a number of engravings, maps, charts, prologues, indices, etc.. Rare, the OCLC records only two copies; one at the Universitatsbibliothek Heidelberg (OCLC #315584645), and a second copy at Columbia University (#83326666). A third copy is available with another vendor at a higher cost. Although the title page, preface, and colophon have been withdrawn, I've collated the rest of the work and the Bible is complete. There are 34 woodcuts, including one delightful full-page illustration of Ezekiel's vision. There are eight foldouts; five maps (p1,44,62,400,457) and t … [Click Below for Full Description]

FORLANI PAOLO

DONI (Antonio Francesco)
In Vinegia, appresso Dominico Farri, 1567. Small 8vo, 153 x 100 mms., pp. [xvi], 439 440 - 442 blank]. woodcut ornament on title-page, woodcut portrait of author on verso of leaf facing first page of text [p. xvi, recto blank], contemporary inscription on title-page, inscription dated "1569 in Padua" on recto of front free end-paper, small, later seminary bookplate on front free paste-down end-paper, contemporary vellum, remnants of ties; end-papers and binding a bit soiled, but a good copy. The publisher and musician Antonio Francesco Doni (1513 - 1574) "founded in Milan the Accademia Ortolana , an academy of poets, painters and musicians, but was dissolved at the instigation of the church because of perceived as offensive publications. To rehabilitate himself and get a job with the Bishop of Piacenza , he wrote within a short time the musicological Dialogo della musica , which he published in 1544 in Venice . However, the work was judged negatively by the critics" (Wikipedia). It was first published in two volumes in 1552 - 1553, with a further edition in 1562 This appears to be the second collected edition, or third edition. and there were many subsequent editions, which suggests that it was Doni's most successful work. This also probably counts as an early utopian work, visualizing a society composed of anarchists and communists, though the language often verges on satire or irony. Doni's reputation with academics and critics began to improve recently with the publicaiion of G. Masi, "'Quelle Discordanze sì Perfette'. Anton Francesco Doni 1551–1553," in Atti e M … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

ARGARIA, Casparo.
Rome: Antonio Lafreri, 1567. 425 x 565mm. A few tiny nicks to edges. An extremely rare map-view of Messina from the mainland (although the strait is depicted as a very narrow channel), with a 167-point key. The dedication is to the Duke of Bibona (Bivona?). Little is known of Argaria other than the fact he produced two maps: the environs of Naples (1538) and this plan. The publisher, Frenchman Antonio Lafreri (or Antoine Lafréry, c.1512-77), became a major figure in Italian cartography with his 'assembled-to-order' books of maps which had the figure of the Titan Atlas holding up the globe.

[Click Below for Full Description]
