Rabenhaupt (Rabenhapp), Johann.
Prague, 1565. - Folio (235 x 314 mm). German ms. on paper with calligraphic captions and several half-titles. 453 ff. Contemp. blindstamped pigskin on wooden boards. Wants ties. Exceptionally attractive and important manuscript from the Bohemian Royal offices; the principal document of the Bohemian national finances in the second year of the rule of Emperor Maximilian II. A beautiful and hitherto unknown document of Renaissance bookkeeping in its well-preserved original binding. - In the present manuscript, Johann Rabenhaupt, head of the Royal bursary and responsible for the accounting year 1565, has testified the correct statement of revenues and expenditures by his signature on every page. The volume begins with an alphabetical index, arranged in double pages and listing revenues (on left) and payments (on right) by name. Among the payers and recipients are several important names, most of them members of German-Bohemian, Czech and Polish noble families, the Tyrolean glass manufacturer Sebastian Hochstetter von Scheibenegg (d. 1573), but also the great physician Pietro Andrea Mattioli (1500-77): "Petter Andreas Mathiolo [.] (f. 263v). Mattioli, known especially for his Dioscorides commentary, moved to Prague in 1552 as personal physician to Archduke Ferdinand, where he was later to be made head medical advisor to Emperor Maximilian … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bertelli, Ferrando
1565. Venice. An excellent example of this rare map, trimmed to neatlines and re-margined as styled for inclusion in Lafreri-school atlases; strong impression. 400 x 300 mm.- Finely engraved wide-margined example of Ferando Bertelli's rare map of the Indian Ocean, one of the earliest printed maps to focus on the region. The map is also sometimes attributed to Niccolo Nelli, the engraver. The map shows the Indian subcontinent, the Strait of Horumz, the eastern half of the Gulf, and the Indian Ocean, including the islands of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the Maldives, Seychelles, the western tip of Sumatra and what must be the eastern tip of Somalia. Many of the topographic names in the Gulf region derive from the forms used by Portuguese explorers, but they can be identified, sometimes tentatively, from their place on the map and from the early accounts of voyages: "Cor. Dulfar" (Dhofar), the island "Macira" (Masirah), "C. Resalgate" (Ras el Had?), Galatia (the ancient site Qalhat), "Mazcate" (Muscat), the island "Quexumo" (Qeshm), "Ormus" (Hormuz) and there is even an unlabelled city close to present-day Abu Dhabi. Two of the ships are labelled with their destinations: "Calicut" (Kozhikode) on the Malabar Coast and "Moluche" (the Moluccas) in the East Indies. The island of Baharen (Bahrain) is also shown, first visited by the Portuguese as early as 1485 by Duarte Barbosa. Bertelli's map is based upon the first edition of Ramusio's map, which appeared in hisDelle Navigation e Viaggi. I … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cornelis CORT
Engraving, 1565, signed on plate with the names of the engraver and t … [Click Below for Full Description]

FREGOSO, Battista (1453-1504).
Antuerpiae:: Apud Ioannem Bellerum, sub Aquila aurea., 1565., 1565. Small 8vo. [48], 798 pp. Woodcut title vignette, with an added extensive index of proper names, woodcut initial letters. Original full green vellum; heavily rubbed and darkened. With four manuscript pages at rear entitled, "Historia Lúdo?ico"[?]; marginalia (minor) p. 129. Very good. Rare. RECORDED THE EXTRAORDINARY - ONE OF THE WORLD'S EARLY ENCYCLOPEDIAS: Latin translation by Camillus Gilinus of the Italian original, which was never printed. Printed by Jean Beller (1526-1595). The work is a record of extraordinary events, or "memorable incidents", in history from the lives of famous men: Johannes Gutenberg and Christopher Columbus are both mentioned on page 634. "The anecdotal material is organized under eighty-nine headings, such as: On Majesty, On Fortitude, On Poverty, On Piety against Parents, On Military Stratagems, On Unusual Kinds of Death, etc. The work is an imposing encyclopedia of historical elementary materials of the kind that we find in the Vita Tamerlani of Enea Silvio and his successors." - Eric Voegelin, ?David L. Morse, ?William M. Thompson, History of Political Ideas: Renaissance and Reformation, 1998, p. 54. ". . . Fregoso's text is the likely source for the humanist Girolamo Morlini's story of a young girl's transformation in a Neapolitan convent . . . This particular episode of spontaneous female-to-male sex change became an exemplary case and was routinely cited in both scientific and literary texts which discussed this marvel of physiology. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Battista PITTONI detto “Battista Vicentino (Vicenza 1520 - 1583)
Acquaforte e bulino, 1565, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a destra. [Click Below for Full Description]
