CAMOCIO GIOVANNI FRANCESCO
Venezia, 1564. Copper engraving, mm 272x382; fine impression; good condition, original glue traces, water stains in upper margin; remargined by the publisher, as very often, in order to bring all maps to the same size. Woodward attributes this map to Paolo Forlani. The map follows exactly the Zorzi-Pagano model of 1538, being almost a copy in copper. Famous map, traced in 38 Libraries, as it had been the most succesfull of the 60s. There is a second state of the map, dated 1584, by Donato Bertelli, and a later third one with his name erased. Zacharakis (2004), 15; Bifolco-Ronca (2018), 719 Nr.cat: 4622

Scholae Lavinganae 1565 first edition rare in and of itself! Printed in Lauingen Chytraeus. De Ratione Decendi 1564 Printed in Wittemberg (100, 120 leafs) Significance of this work on the development of Harvard's current curriculum (from a Harvard History/Henry Dunster Scholar): "Sturm had a great deal of influence on the views of Petrus Ramus, who in turn had a great impact on Dunster in the development of his teaching methodology and in setting up Harvard's curriculum. So, in terms of its historical value in helping shape early Harvard, this book might have had some direct impact. I don't that for sure, of course, but Dunster would have held Sturm in very high regard." After Dunster's passing it somehow came to Thomas Foxcroft, a Puritan minister. Small. Martin Luther
Jena: Donati Richtzenhaini, Thomae Rebarti, 1564. See pictures. All volumes have a water mark, from bottom, to mid-page; this also affected the pigskin at the bottom half, with some waviness. Volume 1's wooden front board is broken with the fore-edge half missing, the following endpage and title page exhibit correlating damage (see pictures). Occasional edge wear, chipping, rub, and worm hole to all three covers. Volumes 2 & 3 have had their pigskin bindings loosened at an edge to check for valuable manuscripts behind the covers (I assume). Top of spine of volume 2 is chipped. No clasps remain, although their evidence does. Binding feels a little tight. Some older annotations and ownership inscriptions in all three. Occasional edge chip, dog-eared page, thumbing, fox spot, etc.. Consistently toned throughout. Despite notes, they display handsomely and exude a pleasing sense of historicity. An early (1564-1567) Opera Omnium (complete works) of Martin Luther, printed in folio in Jena, Germany. Bound in period blind stamped pigskin bindings dated "1571". The publishers produced a fourth volume, after these, which is not included in this set.
Magnifico esemplare. "Two maps on one sheet,, 1564, signed and dated on the plate. Example in the first state of two, before the address of Peter de Nobili. Beautiful engravings printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""Lamb in the circle"", with wide margins, in excellent conditions. The cartographic source of these two maps is unknown; but if the cartographic sources in the maps and place names are derived from previous Gastaldi (1548) and Brooks (1561), the morphology of the islands is very different.
Fera[n]do Berteli exc: 1564. [Click Below for Full Description]

A very rare and desirable Vulgate Biblia Sacra printed in Paris by Prevost and Mace. Shortly after this 1564 Jerome-Latin edition was published, Benoit translated it into French. However, Benoit being a devout Catholic, was heavily accused of being too Calvinistic in his theology and translations. This Bible includes Rene Benoit's 'Stromata' - a compendium of Biblical and theological miscellanies.

Biblia Sacra
excudebat Fleury Prévost Jean Mace. 1564 BIBLE Biblia Sacra ENORMOUS Benoit Vulgate Catholic v Calvinism Stromata A very rare and desirable Vulgate Biblia Sacra printed in Paris by Prevost and Mace. While 16th-century Bibles are not all together impossible to find, folio editions of Rene Benoit Vulgate Bibles are exceedingly rare. Shortly after this 1564 Jerome-Latin edition was published, Benoit translated it into French. However, Benoit being a devout Catholic, was heavily accused of being too Calvinistic in his theology and translations. This Bible includes Rene Benoit s Stromata a compendium of Biblical and theological miscellanies. So, in terms of its historical value in helping shape early Harvard, this book might have had some direct impact. I don't that for sure, of course, but Dunster would have held Sturm in very high regard." After Dunster's passing it somehow came to Thomas Foxcroft, a Puritan minister. Small. 1564. Uncommon Plantin Press. The Plantin Press at Antwerp was one of the focal centers of the fine printed book in the 16th century. Psalmorum bound with Proverbia, Ecclesiastes, et Cantica Canticorum Psalms, With Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs (Song of Solomon) Together 2 volumes of books from the Old Testament bound in 1 each with title page. 90, (4), 124 leaves. Small 16mo., Contemporary gilt ruled calf with initials RS gilt on covers. All edges gilt. Christophe Plantin (ca 1520 - 1589) of Touraine was trained as a bookbinder. He fled from Paris where at least one printer had recently been burned at the stake for heresy, and went to Antwerp. There he bound books, became a citizen, and by 1555 began to print books, at first for distribution by other publishers. The city was already an established center of printing woodcuts, engravings and books. Plantin took on an assistant, Jan Moretus (Moerentorf), who read Latin and Greek and could write correspondence in several modern languages. He became Plantin's business manager, son-in-law and eventually his successor in the Plantin printing press. For over two hundred years the Plantin press had a monopoly, granted by the papacy, for the printing of liturgical formularies, including in Spain. In 1562, suspected of heresy, Plantin fled to France for two years. At an auction of his press, friends bought up his equipment on his behalf. After 1564, when Plantin set up again in a new shop at the sign of De Gulden Passer ("The Golden Compasses"), the printers mark of the House of Plantin. It often appeared in a vignette on … [Click Below for Full Description]

WEYER, Johann
Basileae: Ioannem Oporinum, 1564. 1564 WITCHCRAFT Johann Weyer Praestigiis Daemonum Mental Illness Witch TortureThe first book ever to defend witches!Johann Weyer was a 16th-century Dutch occultist who is known to have been the first to publish works persecuting witch hunts. Weyer vehemently opposed the harsh punishment of witches and regularly argued against his peers who justified torture. These views were collected and published in 1563 under the title 'De Praestigiis Daemonum'.Also known as 'On the Illusion of Demons', 'Daemonum' was Weyer's most important and influential work. In it, he argued that witchcraft did not exist and those that claimed to be witches were simply mentally ill and needed psychological help. Weyer provides 60 different accounts of witchcraft in this work, describing gullibility or lack of mental stability in the accused. Because of this, 'Daemonum' has since been considered the precursor to modern psychiatry. According to Garrison-Morton,"Weyer was the first European physician to take an empirical, scientific approach to the study of mental illness. At the height of the witchcraft delusion he argued that witches were mentally ill women who deserved humane treatment instead of torture and punishment." Modern scholars such as Vera Hoorens claim that Weyer's religious persuasions were at play as well. It is thought that another contributor to Weyer writing this book was his attempt at criticizing the Catholic Church and exposing corruption within. [Click Below for Full Description]

DAMHOUDERE, Josse
Anvers, Jean Bellere, 1564. ______ Format : In-4. Collation : (8), 228, (21) ff. Reliure : Vélin. (Reliure ancienne.). *-------* Second French edition. Illustrated by 69 woodcuts, 14 more than in the first edition. We see more often the Latin editions on the market, the two in French are much rarer. This treaty on criminal law is famous for its illustrations showing the most varied criminal acts: theft, murder, perjury, sacrilege, fornication, "sin against nature" (with oneself, with men, with animals) ..., procedures to be followed and the corresponding punishments : torture, executions, prisons, galleys.

LEMNIUS (Levinus), Occulta naturae miracula, Anvers, Guillaume Simon, 1564.
