Mario CARTARO o CARTARI (1560-1620)
Bellissimo esemplare, in perfette condizioni. Rara. A nice map of the island engraved by Mario Cartaro and published in Venice by Ferrando Bertelli, 1562. The map is a venetian replica of the work published in Rome by Tramezzino in 1559, engraved by Sebastiano del Re. Often we find this map in a sheet including the map of Cyprus, also by Cartaro. A very nice example of this rare map, wide margins, perfect conditions. Zacharakis, A Catalogue of Printed Maps of Greece, 353; Almagià, Monumenta cartographica vaticana II (1948) p. 117, note 4; Tooley, Italian Atlases , 175; Borroni Salvadori 121; Newberry Library VAULT oversize Ayer 135 .L2 1575 AI, plate [23] (PrCt).

BIBLIOGRAFIA & CENSIMENTO R. ARISTOTLE
1562. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The pioneering work on zoology!" This book, the first of six volumes of the complete works of Aristotle, is an incredible tome on animals. This book (part 2 of vol. 6) is complete in itself and includes commentary by Averroes. Averroes, a 12th-century was known for his commentary on Islamic philosophy and theology, but he gained his eternal fame in this commentary on Aristotle. He is quoted in mentioning Giraffe's and other large animals in the gardens of kings. This commentary is important because it was the foundation for the revival of Aristotle in the 13th-century, which prior to Averroes, was all but lost. This "History of Animals" is an accurate eye-witness work on marine-biology particularly on the island of Lesbos - Aristotle discusses the life of octopus, dogfish, catfish, anatomy and behaviors of animals, offspring and reproduction, and more! In addition to Aristotle on animals, this book includes commentary on sleep, divination, dreams and dream interpretation, the mind and memory, and Theodore Gaza's interpretation of animal movement. Bound in early 15th-cenry vellum illuminated manuscript. [Attributes: First Edition]

Quarto, measures 12.5" x 9" x 2.5", Complete except for pgs. 491-502 and 513-518, which, interestingly were excised, probably by a later papal book 'inquisition,' or censure, ironically. Text in Latin. From Wikipedia: "Gregory of Nyssa, also known as Gregory Nyssen (Greek: Γρηγόριος Νύσσης; c. 335 - c. 395), was bishop of Nyssa from 372 to 376 and from 378 until his death. He is venerated as a saint in Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, Lutheranism, and Anglicanism. Gregory, his elder brother Basil of Caesarea, and their friend Gregory of Nazianzus are collectively known as the Cappadocian Fathers. Gregory lacked the administrative ability of his brother Basil or the contemporary influence of Gregory of Nazianzus, but he was an erudite theologian who made significant contributions to the doctrine of the Trinity and the Nicene Creed. Gregory's philosophical writings were influenced by Origen. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ludovico Ariosto
Venice: Vincenzo Valgrisi. Condition: Very Good. Well-preserved 1562 edition of Ariosto's epic poem "Orlando Furioso". Text in Latin, the pages crisp, the printing eminently readable. The woodcuts as well have maintained their detail and sharpness. Hand-bound (and signed and dated at the rear pastedown by the binder) in a dark-red, full leather, with raised bands and bright gilt-rule and lettering to the spine. New decorative endpapers, with gilt-flecked accents. Tight and solidly VG, with the binder's personal bookplate at the front free endpaper's verso. The most noticeable flaw to the original text is the rubbing and loss at the title page. Beyond that, light, forgiveable foxing and occasional shadowing thru the text. Fascinating armorial plate of the period at the title page's verso. Thick octavo, 666 pgs.

(Appended thereto as the second part of a collection of earlier works by Cardano, gathered here for the first time. This part lacks the leaf with the printer's device). <br><br>"Cardano is unusual among Renaissance writers on dreams, in that he both records a good many of his own dreams, displaying keen interest in them, and has a highly developed theory about the causation of dreams and the method of interpreting them. Hugh Latimer
Please read description. 1st Edition: 1562 Sermons Preached By the Ryght Revernde - Father in God and Constant Matir of Jesus Christe, Maister Hugh Latimer By: Samuel Clarke Published: John Day Beautiful English Black Letter Throughout One of the three Oxford Martyrs Latimer was born into a family of farmers in Thurcaston, Leicestershire. His birthdate is unknown. Contemporary biographers including John Foxe placed the date somewhere between 1480 and 1494. He started his studies in Latin grammar at the age of four, but not much else is known of his childhood. He attended Cambridge University and was elected a fellow of Clare College on 2 February 1510. He received the Master of Arts degree in April 1514 and he was ordained a priest on 15 July 1515. In 1522. Latimer joined a group of reformers including Bilney and Robert Barnes that met regularly at the White Horse Tavern. He began to preach publicly on the need for the translation of the Bible into English. This was a dangerous move as the first translation of the New Testament by William Tyndale had recently been banned. In early 1528, Latimer was called before Cardinal Thomas Wolsey and he was given an admonition and a warning. The following year, Wolsey fell from Henry VIII's favour when he failed to expedite the annulment of Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon. In contrast, Latimer's reputation was in the ascendant as he took the lead among the reformers in Cambridge. During Advent in 1529, he preached his two "Sermons on the Card" at St Edward's Church. In 1535, he was appointed Bishop of Worcester, in succession t … [Click Below for Full Description]

He soon left the convent and started a life of frequent travels, during which he encountered humanists like Reginald Pole. In the 1550s, the Papal printer, Paulus Manutius, first substituted Bruto’s name with an alias due to suspicions of heresy which would accompany him throughout his life. In 1562, Bruto was in Lyon, in touch with circles upholding anti-Medicean views—ideas which also pervade ‘Florentinae Historiae’. The prefac … [Click Below for Full Description]

Spine in five compartments, raised bands, later label, title inked to fore-edge, small piece of wood missing from upper outer corner of lower cover. Very good, clean copy, handsomely bound, of Giovanni Michele Bruto’s controversial history of Florence. Born in Venice, Bruto (1517-92) was a Hermit of St Augustin and a historiographer. The preface is a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ambrose, Saint; Saint Jerome; & Saint Augustine.
Romae: Apud Paulum Manutium, Aldi F., 1562. 4to (21.8 cm, 8.5"). 109, [7] ff. Brought together here are St. Ambrose's De virginitate, St. Jerome's Epistola ad Demetriadem de virginitate servandra, and St. Augustine's De sancta virginitate, three important works by three Church Fathers on celibacy and virginity, concerns of the early church that greatly affected the life of early clergy and nuns and had significant ramifications for laity as well. The Roman Aldine press essentially served as an extension of the papacy, which capitalized on its fame to disseminate — with great cachet — Vatican-approved texts in the publication war that was such an integral part of the Protestant and Catholic Reformations, this work being no exception. This neatly printed text has single columns with unaccomplished guide letters and shouldernotes using roman font; the iconic Aldine device appears on the title-page and an errata list appears in double-column format at the end. Provenance: The printer's mark of Jan Baptiste Verdussen II depicting a stork feeding a snake to another stork with the Latin motto "Virtus pietas homini tutissima," which can be dated between 1659 and 1759, has been excised from another source and affixed to the front pastedown (possibly as a bookplate, as speculated by the Provenance Online Project); this title is later listed in the auction catalogue of Jean-Baptiste Verdussen III's book collection, suggesting this copy may have belonged to the Verdussen family. Two early inked signatures of G.J. Enoch and J.F. Van de Velde also appear on the front endpapers. Mos … [Click Below for Full Description]

CATANEO, M. Girolamo
Francesco Marchetti all’insegna dell’Ancora [per Lodovico Sabbio]. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Folio. ff. (2) 29, (1). Roman and Italic letter. Large printer’s woodcut device on title-page, one historiated initial, a few decorative and typographical head- and tail- pieces; armorial woodcut representing three lilies to verso of t-p, 58 full page diagrams for the computation of time. Light age yellowing, t-p a bit dusty, inoffensive oil splash to first ll., minor water stain progressively disappearing to central gatherings, small tear to lower right corner of first fol., worm trail to marginal upper corner of last 3 ll. A good copy in contemporary limp vellum, fore edges slightly sprinkled red, yapp edges, rubbed. Rare example of this curious mathematical-astronomical treatise by Girolamo Cataneo (d. circa 1584), a mathematician and military architect from Novara (Piedmont) who served Charles V of Spain as a soldier and then worked as a military engineer for many aristocratic families in Northern Italy. He wrote numerous books on fortification but was also interested in astrology and prognostication as a codified means of predicting events by observation of signs. The book explains a board game based on calendar computations consisting of 58 numerical charts related to the 12 months of the year. With no element of skill or strategy, the game involves the casual extraction by chance of two numbers by the use of two dice, to calculate the Moon phases from 1562 to 1580, specific dates such as Easter and the beginning of the Advent and the Golden number.  The work also includes a ded … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible. Italian. 1562. Brucioli.
Stampato Appresso Francesco Durone, 1562. A much revised edition of Brucioli's Old Testament married to Massimo Teofilo's New Testament, printed for Genevan Protestant refugees and meant to be spirited into Italy for crypto-Protestants. Darlow and Moule note that "this edition closely resembles certain contemporary French and English Bibles printed at Geneva. The woodcuts are the same as those in the French Bible of 1560 printed by Antoine Rebul . . . , and the type is that of the English Geneva Bible of 1560." Of the two variations described in Darlow and Moule, this copy is variant A, meaning that the N.T. has marginal notes similar to those of the rest of the text; Darlow and Moule also tell us that "[t]his revision. . . has been ascribed to Filippo Rusticio, or Rustico." The work offers a handsome printer's device on its title-page, along with => 24 in-text woodcuts of various sizes, all located in the Old Testament, and a folding plate, "La forma de la restauration del Tempio." A second folding plate contains a table of the passion timeline. At the end of the edition's O.T. is a two-page commentary on "Lo stato dei giudei sotto la monarchia dei Romani," i.e., the state of the Jews in [ancient] Rome.

FALLOPPIO, Gabrielle.
Cologne: Arnold Birkmann, 1562. First edition. First edition, second issue, of the greatest Italian anatomical book of the sixteenth century (first published in 1561, see below)."Rather than a complete study of the whole of anatomy, Falloppio, who was a pupil of Vesalius, designed this work as a critical commentary of his teacher's De humani corporis fabrica, correcting some of its errors and adding additional observations and details. For this reason there was no need for illustrations. In fact it was a work of great originality, in which Falloppio reported very many new discoveries and observations. It was his only work published during his lifetime, and therefore the only one which can be said to be fully authentic."Falloppio discovered and first described the chorda tympani, semicircular canals and the 'aqueduct of Falloppius', correctly described the structure and course of the cerebral vessels, and knew the circular folds of the small intestines. He gave the first description of the 'circle of Willis', enumerated all the nerves of the eye, and introduced a number of anatomical names, including the vagina and placenta, and is best remembered for his account of the tubes named after him. He also gave excellent descriptions of the ovaries, hymen, clitoris, and round ligaments, and proved the existence of the seminal vesicles. He included an important account of the kidneys, which may antedate that of Eustachius. For a full account of Falloppio's discoveries, see the article by C.D. O'Malley in the DSB. TAISNIER, Jean [PEREGRINUS, Peter; BENEDETTI, Giovanni Battista]
Johann Birkmann, Cologne, 1562. First edition of this exceptionally rare, interesting, and notorious work - the second printed work on magnetism, preceded only by the Epistola de magnete of Peregrinus (1558) (which is virtually unobtainable). Taisnier's work, in fact, contains a plagiarism of Peregrinus, which it reprints verbatim, and of the equally rare Demonstratio proportionum motuum localium (1554) of Benedetti (1530-90), which anticipates Galileo's theory of falling bodies. But Taisnier's book also contains important original contributions, notably to navigation. It "had a section on the relation of hull shape to speed in ship design. Its most valuable contribution was a long dissertation upon the causes and sequence of tides . [it] marked a definite step forward in tidal theory" (Waters, pp. 150-151). "The Epistola ranks as one of the most impressive scientific treatises of the Middle Ages. Not only did Peregrinus bring together virtually all the relevant, contemporary knowledge on magnetism, he added to it and, of the greatest importance, organized the whole into a science of magnetism. He formulated rules for the determination of magnetic polarity, which then enabled him to enunciate rules for attraction and repulsion, all of which would today form the basis of an introductory lesson on magnetism. As the two magnetic compasses and perpetual motion devices for clock and wheel testify, Peregrinus was also seriously concerned with the practical application of magnetic force. The subsequent influence of his treatise was considerable. The existence of at least thirty-on … [Click Below for Full Description]
