[Surveying; Early Printing]; [Fitzherbert, John Sometimes also attributed to Sir Anthony Fitzherbert]
by Thomas Marshe, 1560. VERY RARE, an early reissue, date of publication estimated by STC. The first edition was printed by Pynson in 1523. Engraved titlepage with acorn device. 8vo, (136 by 91mm), full blind paneled calf over wooden boards in period style, the spine with raised bands between compartments framed in blind. A4, B-H7, lacking final blank leaf H8 and text leaves G8 and H1. VERY RARE, OCLC SHOWS COPIES AT THE HUNTINGTON, BRITISH LIBRARY AND CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY ONLY. This edition has Berthelet's verses and the prologue, but it does not name Fitzherbert as the author. From The Boke of Surveying and Improvements, may be learned a great deal about the economy of the feudal system at the time of its decline. Whether the judge, Sir Anthony Fitzherbert, or his elder brother John was the author of the two tracts is a debate that has been going on for centuries, but in either case the value of these important sources for English agrarian history remains unaffected. Professor Skeat, in a positive way, championed the claims of Sir Anthony, and was met by the Rev. Reginald Fitzherbert in an article which sets forth at some length the arguments and probabilities in favor of the elder brother. The catalogue of the British Museum apparently inclines to the latter's side, while J. M. Rigg, in the Dictionary of National Biography, warmly espouses the cause of Sir Anthony.

ALTHAMER, Andreas (ca. 1500-ca. 1539)
Bautzen, Johann Wolrab, 1560. 8vo. (8) 236 (43) lvs. Contemporary brown painted limp vellum. VD 16 A 2020; Kolde 7/m. Rare Latin edition of one of Althamer's most widely read writings. In 1527 Althamer published a refutation of a treatise by the Anabaptist leader Hans Denck (ca. 1495-1527), in which Denck had collected 40 apparently contradictory Scriptural passages. Althamer however, who added 60 further paradoxes of his own choice, showed the contradictions to be mere appearance which could be solved in a number of ways. In the years following the list of alleged discrepancies was greatly enlarged and finally the edition published in 1534 -as well as all later editions- discussed no less than 200 seemingly contradictory passages in the Bible. It went at least through 12 more editions in the sixteenth century and has also been translated in German. - Dated owner's inscription on first endpaper, library stamp and some library shelfmarks on title page, a single annotation on last endpaper, and a few old marginal annotations.

Parisiis, Apud Andream Wechelum 1560.

"Jean de Jandun of course had to leave Paris as soon as his part in the writing of the Defensor Pacis became known, and after his escape from the papal prison in Avignon, seems to have been with Louis of Bavaria until that monarch's death in 1343, although some would place Jean's death in early as 1328" (Thorndike, III/pp. 282-3, in nota). Fabricius, Bibl. [Click Below for Full Description]

Venetia, 1560, (Colophon: In Venetia, 1560 (In Venetia, appresso Francesco Sansouino, 1561). in-4, cc (4), 88 (4), ultima bianca, errata in fine. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
